Start With Volume, Not Square Footage

Most dealership service bay planning mistakes we see start with a floor plan drawn before anyone ran the numbers on repair order volume. Square footage matters, but it’s downstream of a more important question: how many vehicles do you actually need moving through the shop on a busy day, and what percentage of those are quick-lane oil changes versus multi-hour diagnostic or heavy repair jobs? Not every bay needs a heavy-duty two post lift, and not every bay should get a basic scissor. Part of good dealership service bay planning is matching lift type to the work that actually happens in that bay. Quick-lane bays generally do best with in-ground or low-rise scissor lifts that let technicians walk around the vehicle without wrestling with arms, since speed and ease of use matter more than lifting capacity there.

General repair bays usually call for asymmetric two post lifts from Rotary or Challenger, giving techs full underside access for brake, suspension, and exhaust work. Alignment bays need a dedicated four post lift or in-ground rack with runways built for the alignment system you’re standardizing on. Heavy-duty trucks and fleet work push you toward higher-capacity commercial lifts, sometimes 12,000 lb and up. We walk dealerships through this bay-by-bay rather than ordering one lift model across the board, because a one-size shop almost never fits an actual dealership’s mixed workload.

Electrical, Air, and Drainage Come Before Lift Delivery

We can’t count how many times we’ve shown up to install a lift and found the electrical service or air lines weren’t run to spec because nobody looped us in during construction. Two post and four post lifts have specific voltage, amperage, and compressed air requirements, and in-ground lifts need drainage and conduit planned before the slab is poured. A two post lift raising a full-size pickup or van needs enough overhead clearance for the vehicle at full height plus the lift arms, and many older dealership buildings simply weren’t built with that in mind when they were converted from general retail or older service concepts. Column spacing matters just as much — support columns placed in the wrong spot can make an otherwise perfect bay unusable for a two post lift’s post placement.

Good dealership service bay planning accounts for these constraints early, measuring actual clear height and column-to-column distance in every candidate bay rather than assuming a generic bay works everywhere. We’ve had to steer dealerships away from otherwise ideal locations because the building’s structural grid didn’t leave room for proper lift post spacing. If you’re working with an existing structure, get a lift installer to physically walk the bays and take measurements before you finalize any equipment order — it’s a lot cheaper than discovering the conflict after delivery.

Planning For EV And Hybrid Service Now

Even Iowa dealerships that aren’t selling many EVs today are asking us how to plan for them. EV and hybrid service brings different lift point requirements, battery pack weight considerations, and in some cases dedicated bay space for high-voltage work. Smart dealership service bay planning builds in at least one bay with the lift capacity and clearance to handle heavier EV platforms without needing a retrofit two years from now.

Traffic Flow And Technician Efficiency

A shop can have the right lifts and still underperform if vehicles and technicians can’t move efficiently between bays, parts, and the service drive. Part of dealership service bay planning that’s easy to overlook is simply walking the path a vehicle takes from write-up to lift to completion, and making sure that path isn’t crossing through tool storage, parts pickup, or another bay’s swing space. Tight aisles between lift columns force techs to walk around instead of through, adding minutes to every job that add up across a full day.
