Trying to run DOT inspections on a general-purpose 2-post lift built for pickups and passenger cars is a mistake we see a lot in Iowa shops that grew into commercial work without upgrading their equipment. Trucks, buses, and trailers have axle configurations, wheelbases, and frame contact points that a standard lift simply wasn’t designed to handle safely. Capacity, Runway Length, and Wheelbase Range

The single biggest sizing mistake we see is buying a lift rated for a specific gross vehicle weight without checking the wheelbase range it can actually accommodate. A lift can be rated for 35,000 lbs and still be useless for a long-wheelbase straight truck if the runway or platform length doesn’t reach the axles. Any solid dot inspection lift guide has to treat capacity and wheelbase as two separate questions, because manufacturers spec them separately for a reason.

Before you buy, pull the wheelbase specs on the widest range of vehicles that come through your bay — from a straight box truck to the longest tractor-trailer combination you service — and confirm the lift’s adjustable runways or platform length covers that whole range with margin. A lift height that puts the frame rail at eye level, with enough clearance to walk the full length of the vehicle underneath, cuts inspection time dramatically compared to a lift that only gets you partial clearance. Bay Layout and Approach Clearance

We’ve seen shops install a perfectly good heavy-duty lift in a bay that was simply too tight, forcing drivers to jockey the vehicle repeatedly just to get it centered.

Plan for at least the vehicle’s full length plus 15-20 feet of straight approach, and make sure overhead clearance accounts for the tallest unit you expect to service, including antennas, exhaust stacks, and roof-mounted equipment. Door height and width at the bay entrance often get overlooked until a trailer literally doesn’t fit — check those dimensions against your tallest and widest regular customers before you finalize equipment placement.

Certification, Load Testing, and Inspection Records

Every heavy-duty lift used for commercial vehicle work needs documented periodic inspection and certification, separate from the DOT inspections you’re performing on customer vehicles. Keeping these records straight matters because an auditor or insurance inspector may ask to see your own lift’s certification history, not just the vehicles that pass through it. We recommend a documented annual inspection at minimum, with more frequent checks on cables, hydraulics, and locking mechanisms for lifts running high daily cycle counts.
