This isn’t optional gear you keep in a drawer for the rare job; if you’re servicing EVs at all, every technician touching one needs access to properly rated PPE every time.

It sounds like overkill until a technician forgets a step on an unfamiliar model. Diagnostic Scan Tools That Actually Cover EV Platforms
A lot of shops assume their existing scan tool covers EVs because it covers everything else. It usually doesn’t, at least not fully. Battery management systems, motor controllers, and regenerative braking systems on EVs use manufacturer-specific protocols that a generic OBD-II reader won’t touch. Before your first EV rolls into the bay, confirm your scan tool’s software package includes EV modules for the brands you expect to see, and budget for the subscription updates most of these platforms require annually.
This is also where a lot of shops get surprised on cost, not because the tool itself is expensive but because the software licensing adds up across multiple brands. We tell shops to start with the two or three EV brands most common in their area — for us in central Iowa that’s typically Tesla, Ford, and Chevrolet — and expand coverage as demand grows rather than buying every manufacturer package on day one.
Fire Safety and Thermal Event Preparedness
Lithium-ion battery fires behave differently than gasoline fires, and standard shop extinguishers aren’t rated to handle them. A serious ev shop equipment checklist includes a Class D or lithium-battery-rated extinguisher, a thermal imaging camera to check pack temperature after an incident, and a clear evacuation plan if a battery pack shows signs of thermal runaway. Some Iowa fire departments will walk through your shop and advise on placement and quantity — it’s worth the call.

If you’re pulling damaged EV battery packs for any reason, they need to sit in a designated outdoor or fire-rated containment area away from the main shop, not tucked in a corner near your parts shelving. You’ll also want at least one Level 2 charging station in the shop, both for topping off customer vehicles after service and for diagnostic work that requires the vehicle to be charging or discharging under load. A single station handles most independent shops’ volume; dealerships and fleet accounts typically need two or more. Building the List Without Overspending
