Why a 4 Post Lift Safety Checklist Matters More Than You’d Think

Four post lifts get treated like furniture because they feel stable. There’s no swing arm, no single-point pinch hazard, and the vehicle sits flat on a runway instead of hanging from arms. That stability is real, but it also means owners skip the routine checks they’d never skip on a two post lift. We’ve walked into shops where the lift hadn’t been inspected in years because nobody thought it needed it.

The truth is a 4 post lift has just as many wear points as any other equipment — cables that stretch, locks that stick, and hydraulic lines that age. A 4 post lift safety checklist forces you to actually look at those parts instead of assuming the platform holding a customer’s truck twelve feet in the air is fine because it’s always been fine. We build this checklist around the failure points we replace most often in the field, not generic bullet points off a manual nobody reads.

Locking Mechanisms: The First Stop on Any 4 Post Lift Safety Checklist

Every safety-rated four post lift uses mechanical locks, usually a ratchet-style bar or pin system, that engage automatically as the lift rises. These locks are what actually hold the vehicle if hydraulic pressure is lost — the cylinder or cables are secondary. On our 4 post lift safety checklist, the lock check comes first because it’s the single most important safety feature on the machine.

Run the lift up slowly and listen for each lock clicking into place at every notch. If a lock skips, hangs up, or doesn’t engage evenly on both sides of the runway, stop using the lift until it’s serviced. We’ve found locks gummed up with old grease, bent from a tech forcing them, or simply worn enough that they no longer catch cleanly. Test the release mechanism too — a lock that won’t disengage smoothly gets forced, and forced parts break. Any four post unit where one side locks a notch different from the other side needs attention immediately, since that’s an early sign of cable or runway wear that’s about to get worse.

Cables, Slack Chains, and Equalization Points

Four post lifts use a cable system to keep both runways rising and locking together evenly. This is the part of the checklist most owners skip because the cables are tucked under the runway where you can’t see them without lying on the ground. We check for fraying, rust, uneven tension between the front and rear cables, and any slack chain that isn’t sitting the way the manufacturer intended.

Uneven cable tension is one of the most common issues we find on service calls, and it’s exactly why a lift can lock unevenly side to side. If you see a gap between a lock and its pin on one side but not the other while the lift is fully engaged, that’s a cable equalization problem, not a lock problem. Don’t try to adjust cables yourself without the right torque values and the lift fully supported by its locks — this is the one item on any 4 post lift safety checklist we recommend leaving to a trained tech unless you’ve done it before.

Hydraulic System and Cylinder Condition

Even though the locks hold the load, the hydraulic cylinder does the lifting, and a leaking or weak cylinder makes the lift feel sluggish and unpredictable long before it fails outright. Check under the lift for fluid on the shop floor, oily residue on the cylinder rod, or a lift that settles noticeably before the locks catch. Any of these means the cylinder or its seals need replacement soon.

We also check the hydraulic hose routing for pinch points, cracking, or rubbing against the frame — a slow leak here often shows up as low fluid rather than a puddle. Top off fluid to the level the manufacturer specifies and never substitute an unapproved fluid type, since some seals react badly to the wrong hydraulic oil. A lift that rises unevenly, hesitates, or drops slightly before the locks grab is telling you the hydraulic side needs a look before it becomes a bigger repair.

Runway Surface, Rollers, and Alignment Ramps

The runway itself takes a beating from tire scrub, brake dust, and years of vehicles rolling on and off. Cracked welds, bent runway edges, or worn rollers under the carriage all affect how evenly a vehicle sits and how smoothly the lift travels. On alignment lifts specifically, check the turn plates and slip plates for smooth, unrestricted movement — sticky slip plates throw off alignment readings and can put uneven stress on the lift structure during turns.

We also look at the safety catches on drive-on ramps and any approach ramps bolted to the runway ends. These take the hardest hit from vehicles driving on and off daily, and a bent or cracked ramp is a trip and roll-off hazard. Any four post lift used for alignment work should have its runway and turn plate hardware checked more often than a storage-only lift, simply because it sees more precise, repeated movement under load.

Anchoring, Floor Condition, and Overhead Clearance

A four post lift doesn’t always require the same deep anchoring as a two post because the load path runs through four legs instead of two columns, but that doesn’t mean anchoring and floor condition are optional. We check anchor bolts for looseness, concrete cracking radiating from the base plates, and any sign the floor has shifted or settled unevenly under one corner more than another.

Overhead clearance matters just as much. We’ve been called out because a shop added shelving or ductwork after the lift was installed and nobody rechecked clearance at full rise. Walk the full travel range with nothing on the lift and confirm there’s clear space above, especially if the building has had any renovation since installation. Floor condition and clearance rarely change month to month, but they’re worth a full recheck at least once a year and any time the shop layout changes around the lift.

Building a Routine Around Your 4 Post Lift Safety Checklist

A checklist only works if it’s actually run on a schedule instead of once and forgotten. We tell every shop we install for to do a quick visual pass — locks, cables, fluid level, obvious damage — before the first lift of each day, and a full walk-through monthly. Annual service by a trained tech should include cable tension checks, hydraulic fluid analysis, and torque checks on all structural bolts.
