When a 35-foot Class A motorhome or a diesel pusher rolls into your bay, a standard two-post lift isn’t going to cut it. Heavy duty lifts for RV service require higher capacity, wider arm reach, and often mobile column setups that can adjust to wheelbases most passenger-vehicle lifts were never built to handle. Why Standard Lifts Fall Short on RVs

Most two-post lifts topping out around 12,000 to 15,000 lbs simply aren’t rated for the gross weight of a loaded motorhome, and even when the capacity is technically close, the arm geometry doesn’t reach the frame contact points on a long-wheelbase chassis. RVs also carry weight unevenly — full water tanks, generators, and slide-outs shift the center of gravity in ways a passenger car never does. That mismatch is exactly why heavy duty lifts for RV service exist as their own category rather than a beefed-up version of a standard lift.

We’ve walked into more than one Iowa shop where an undersized lift was pressed into RV duty because nobody wanted to spend on dedicated equipment, and it shows up as bent arms, worn cylinders, or a lift that simply won’t reach the pickup points. When we spec heavy duty lifts for RV service for a customer, we start with axle weights and wheelbase, not just gross vehicle weight, because that’s what actually determines whether the lift’s arms and columns will do the job safely for years.

Mobile Column Lifts: The Most Flexible Option

For shops that service a mix of motorhomes, buses, and heavy trucks, mobile column lifts are usually the right call. A set of four, six, or eight columns can be positioned around a vehicle of almost any wheelbase, synchronized wirelessly, and lifted together to a working height that puts axles, suspension, and undercarriage components within easy reach. Because the columns aren’t bolted to fixed points, one set of columns adapts to a Class A today and a straight truck tomorrow.

For a shop doing steady RV volume, we typically recommend sets rated well above the heaviest motorhome you expect to see, since fuel, water, and cargo weight add up fast.

4-Post Lifts for Drive-On Simplicity

If your bay layout allows it, a heavy-capacity 4-post lift is often the simplest way to service RVs, especially for oil changes, brake work, tire rotation, and general inspection. The vehicle drives on under its own power, there’s no need to find frame contact points, and the flat deck supports the RV’s full length evenly. The tradeoff is that 4-post lifts take up more floor space and don’t give you the same open access underneath that mobile columns or a properly configured 2-post lift can provide.

For shops that do heavier structural or axle work in addition to routine service, we often recommend a rolling jack bridge or a set of RUD wheel-free adapters alongside the 4-post platform, so technicians can drop the tires when needed. We size these installs the same way we do any commercial project — matching runway length and capacity to the actual RVs coming through your door rather than a generic spec sheet.

Capacity Ratings You Shouldn’t Round Down

It’s tempting to buy the lift rated just above your heaviest current RV, but that’s a mistake we try to talk customers out of. Fuel, fresh water, gray and black tank levels, and cargo all add thousands of pounds to a motorhome’s actual weight versus its dry weight, and shops tend to underestimate this until they’re staring at a lift alarm mid-lift. Floor Space and Ceiling Height Planning

RVs are long, and some Class A units clear 13 feet with roof-mounted AC units and antennas in place. Before any lift goes in, we walk the bay to confirm door height, ceiling clearance at full lift height, and enough runway length in front of and behind the lift for the vehicle to actually drive in and out without a three-point turn in the parking lot. This is one of the most common planning misses we see with heavy duty lifts for RV service — shops buy the right lift but the wrong bay.

Mobile columns sidestep some of this because they don’t require the same overhead clearance a fixed-post lift does, but you still need enough floor space to spread six or eight columns around a long wheelbase. Installation, Concrete, and Anchoring for RV Weight

Heavy duty lifts for RV service put real load into your floor, and Iowa shops need to think about concrete thickness and rebar before signing off on a location. We’ve seen lifts installed on slabs that were fine for passenger cars but undersized for the point loads of a fully loaded motorhome resting on jacking columns. Our installers run anchor pull tests on every commercial install specifically because a lift is only as strong as the floor it’s bolted to.

If your building has an older slab, or you’re not sure what’s under the surface, we’ll test it before we ever set a column or post. This isn’t optional for equipment carrying RV-class weight — it’s the difference between a lift that lasts fifteen years and one that shifts or cracks the surrounding concrete within a season.

Ongoing Service Keeps Heavy Duty Equipment Safe

Buying the right heavy duty lifts for RV service is half the job; keeping them certified is the other half. We recommend annual inspections at minimum for equipment carrying motorhome-class weight, and more frequent checks if your shop runs multiple shifts or handles a high volume of heavier diesel pushers. Cylinder wear, cable stretch, and column synchronization all matter more at these weight classes than they do on a standard passenger lift.
