A heavy truck lift is a very different animal from the two-post you might already have in the corner of the shop. When we get calls at our Ames office about heavy-duty lifting equipment, the first question is usually not about the lift at all. It is about the shop, the truck mix, and how often that vehicle is coming inside. Getting the answer right on those three questions saves customers across Iowa tens of thousands of dollars, because a heavy-duty lift that does not match the shop is worse than no lift at all.

What counts as a heavy truck lift
The industry loosely defines heavy-duty as anything above 15,000 lb of lift capacity, but that is a fuzzy line. A Rotary SPO16 two-post is technically heavy-duty at 16,000 lb, but it is not the lift you want under a Class 7 or 8 truck. In practice, when we say heavy truck lift we mean equipment rated to raise vehicles at or above 26,000 lb GVWR, which covers medium-duty box trucks, straight trucks, dump bodies, city buses, refuse haulers, and full tractor-trailer combinations. The lifts themselves start around 30,000 lb combined capacity and scale up to 200,000 lb sets.
The wrong lift for the wrong truck is where shops get hurt. A body shop we worked with in central Iowa had been trying to raise a small delivery truck on a general-purpose two-post, wobbling adapters onto the frame rails. When they finally called us they were ready to buy a proper mobile column set. That conversation shifted them from a stopgap fix to real equipment inside 30 days.
The three types most Iowa fleets buy
Ninety percent of heavy-duty lift sales at our shop fall into three buckets. First, mobile column sets. These are portable, rolling columns that grab the wheels of the truck and raise all four (or six) simultaneously. Rotary MCH and Forward MCX are the two lines we sell most. Second, heavy 4-post lifts. These live in one bay, take a full drive-on approach, and are common in inspection lanes and municipal shops. Third, inground pistons or scissor lifts, poured into the concrete for a permanent installation.
Each has strengths. A mobile column set can service any truck that fits under the ceiling. A heavy 4-post gives you a clean, level platform for alignments and DOT inspections. An inground lift disappears when not in use, freeing floor space. When customers ask us to recommend a heavy truck lift for their shop, we walk through the tradeoffs of all three before quoting anything. There is no universal best answer, only the right answer for your specific building and workflow.
A story from an Iowa municipal shop
A mid-sized city public works garage in central Iowa called us with a budget locked in the fall and a job scheduled to start in December. They wanted a drive-on lift rated for 14,000 lb of vehicle to service their fleet of trucks and light equipment. They already had roller jacks and wanted them integrated. That configuration ended up being a heavy 4-post rather than a mobile column set, because the fleet was mostly single-unit trucks and the crew was more comfortable with a fixed platform. We laid the lift out in the bay in October so they could see it before the concrete work started.
The install went in on schedule after the pour cured. That job is the pattern we see most often with municipal shops. The purchase is planned a year ahead, the concrete has to be right, and the crew wants to touch the lift before they sign the PO. When you are spending this kind of money on a heavy truck lift, that hands-on evaluation matters more than any spec sheet.
Sizing the heavy truck lift to your fleet mix
Fleet mix drives capacity, but it also drives lift type. If 80 percent of your work is on a single vehicle class, buy the lift optimized for that class. A shop that services only Class 7 city delivery trucks does not need 200,000 lb capacity, and paying for it wastes money on both the lift and the annual inspection. Conversely, a shop that occasionally sees a loaded tandem trailer needs headroom, and cutting corners on capacity is dangerous.
We ask customers to send us a list of the ten heaviest vehicles they expect to raise in the next five years. That list, plus their bay dimensions and power situation, gives us enough to spec a lift. If a shop in Dubuque or Council Bluffs runs mostly Class 5 to Class 7 trucks with an occasional Class 8, a 48,000 lb four-column set covers 90 percent of the work and can be expanded with two more columns later. If they run Class 8 tandem trailers regularly, we start at six columns and 108,000 lb combined capacity right out of the gate.
Safety systems worth paying for
Every serious heavy-duty lift has an overload sensor, a mechanical safety lock, and either a hydraulic bleed-down protection or a screw-drive backup. When we compare a Rotary MCH19 to a lower-cost import column, the safety system is where the real difference shows up. Padded overhead safety shutoff bars, dual hydraulic direct-drive cylinders, single-point safety releases, and oversized tall carriages for column strength are all features you see on the top-tier lifts and rarely on the cheap ones. Those features add up to a lift that fails safe instead of catastrophically.
ALI Gold Certification is worth checking on any heavy truck lift you are considering. It is a voluntary third-party certification that verifies capacity claims and safety systems. Most Rotary and Forward products carry it. Some cheaper imports do not. When your insurance carrier or DOT inspector asks about certification, ALI Gold is the answer that keeps everyone comfortable. Concrete, power, and utilities
Nothing kills a heavy-duty lift install faster than the wrong floor. Manufacturers spec minimum concrete thickness (typically 6 inches for column sets) and minimum PSI (typically 3,000 to 4,000). Older Iowa shops often have floors that meet the spec in one bay and fail it in another because of past repairs, drains, or trenches. Before we quote installation we walk the bay, look for cracks, and confirm the pour if possible. In a couple of cases we have recommended a partial concrete replacement before the lift ever ships.
Power is the other utility issue. Mobile columns need 208 or 240 volt single-phase power at each column position. Fixed 4-post lifts often need 3-phase for the heavier units. Fleet shops in the Des Moines metro or Cedar Rapids sometimes already have adequate service, but rural shops in Iowa County or Story County frequently need a subpanel upgrade to run a modern heavy-duty lift. Budget for the electrical work in your project, not just the lift itself.
