A home car lift for garage installation intended for actual daily maintenance is a different animal from one bought for storage. An Iowa City car restoration shop owner called us last spring with that exact use case — he wanted a lift at home for the personal projects he never gets to at the shop, and he wanted to be able to work under vehicles without laying on his back. The decision tree looks similar to a storage buyer’s on the surface but forks differently at the second and third branches. This article walks the whole tree the way we walk it on the phone.

Branch one: what “maintenance” actually means

The word maintenance covers a lot of ground. To this restorer it meant weekend oil changes, occasional brake jobs, exhaust patches on the shop pickup, and rust repair on the underbody panels of an ongoing project. That last item is the tell — rust repair requires wheels off and full underside access, which pushes the recommendation from a 4-post storage lift toward a 2-post service lift. If maintenance had meant oil changes and tire rotations only, we would have quoted a home car lift for garage 4-post with a jack tray and been done. Because the job list included wheels-off underside work, the 2-post entered the conversation. We ask this question first because it forks the whole tree. A restorer’s honest answer is usually deeper than a collector’s.

Branch two: site survey before quote

His 30×40 shop had a 12-foot side wall and a slab of unknown age and thickness. We drove down to Iowa City the following week for a free site survey. What we found: the slab was five inches thick with visible rebar at the door threshold and no cracks in the anchor zone we’d need for a 2-post. Ceiling clear height was 138 inches, which is plenty for a standard overhead 2-post. Bay width from wall to center of the shop was 12 feet 4 inches, which is tight for the 116-inch outside-column dimension of a 10,000 pound overhead 2-post but workable. We tape-laid the footprint on the floor with masking tape so he could see it before ordering. This is the single most important step for a home car lift for garage install where the buyer is going to work under the lift daily — you have to visualize the ergonomics before ordering.

Branch three: capacity for what you actually own

His heaviest vehicle was the shop truck at about 6,800 pounds. His project cars were all under 4,000. The instinct with a service lift is to buy exactly to the heaviest current vehicle — because you’re not planning to store on it, so future-proofing capacity matters less than it does on a storage lift. We still bumped him from 9,000 to 10,000 pounds because the incremental price is small and the arm reserves matter on longer wheelbase pickups. Rule for a home car lift for garage service installation: pick capacity 25 to 40 percent above your heaviest daily driver, not just enough. This isn’t padding — it’s cable and cylinder safety margin over a long service life. A 10,000 pound lift used at 60 percent capacity every day will last decades. Used at 95 percent capacity daily, it wears faster.

Branch four: overhead cable or floor plate

Standard 2-post configurations come in two flavors: overhead cable (with an arch across the top that houses the equalization cable and hydraulic hose) and floor plate (with the cable and hose run in a covered channel underfoot). Overhead is the shop standard because nothing is in the way when a tall vehicle drives in. Floor plate is the home standard when ceiling is tight, because the columns can be shorter. His ceiling supported overhead comfortably, and we recommend overhead when it fits — nothing on the floor to trip over, cleaner service work under the vehicle. He picked overhead. For a home car lift for garage installation with an 11-foot ceiling or less, we recommend floor plate. For 12 feet or more, we recommend overhead. Between those numbers, we ask what tall vehicles are likely to drive in.

Branch five: symmetric or asymmetric arms

Symmetric 2-posts have the columns and arms arranged so the vehicle sits centered between them. Asymmetric 2-posts have the columns rotated so the vehicle sits offset toward the front, giving the driver more room to open the door. For a restorer who is going to walk in and out of driver’s doors twenty times a day on the same lift, asymmetric is the right pick. For a shop that lifts pickups and vans as often as cars, symmetric is more forgiving. He picked asymmetric. This detail rarely comes up on a home car lift for garage conversation because most buyers don’t know it exists, but it matters daily for someone who uses the lift for service. Ask about it on any 2-post quote.

Branch six: install and first service

We installed his lift in six hours on a Saturday — anchor drilling, epoxy set, arm calibration, cylinder bleed, safety-lock test. He was lifting his shop truck that afternoon. First service on a 2-post is a 90-day check we schedule automatically: torque check on the anchors, arm restraint verification, cable tension check on the equalization line, hydraulic level top-off. Most owners try to skip the 90-day and stretch to a year. Don’t. The anchors settle in the first thousand cycles and the equalization cable stretches slightly before it stabilizes. Sixty minutes of our labor at 90 days catches both. After that, annual service is the norm for a home car lift for garage service installation with steady weekend use.

What the tree points at for most restorers

For a restoration-adjacent buyer doing real underside work, the tree almost always ends at a 10,000 pound overhead asymmetric 2-post with paid install. For a collector or occasional maintenance buyer, the tree ends at a 9,000 pound 4-post storage lift. The gap between those two answers is where the mistakes get made — buying a 4-post because it’s cheaper, then trying to do wheels-off restoration work by cranking the runway to full height and crawling around the outside of it.
