What overhead means and what baseplate means
A home car lift for garage 2-post comes in two mechanical configurations. Overhead runs the hydraulic hose and the equalization cable across the top of the two columns in a steel arch, with a shutoff bar that stops the lift if a vehicle contacts it on the way up. Baseplate — also called floor plate — runs those same lines through a low steel channel across the floor between the two column bases. The columns themselves and the arms and pads and cylinders are identical between the two configurations. The only difference is where the plumbing lives. That single choice changes ceiling requirement, driver ergonomics, and a couple of specific safety considerations that most catalogs gloss over.
Ceiling requirement: the first safety-relevant number
Overhead 2-posts require roughly 130 to 145 inches of ceiling clearance to safely lift a full-size pickup to arm-full-extension. Baseplate 2-posts require roughly 108 to 115 inches because the columns are shorter — there is no arch overhead. For transmission service you want the vehicle high enough that you can stand comfortably underneath. A tall shop owner wants 6 feet of clearance from floor to lowest vehicle underside; a shorter person can work at 5-and-a-half. That is your minimum lift travel, and it must fit inside your ceiling. Anchor safety and slab condition
Both overhead and baseplate 2-posts anchor through eight wedge anchors into the concrete floor — four at each column base. Anchor torque spec is typically 90 to 110 ft-lb depending on manufacturer. The safety-critical rule is that anchors must land in intact, non-cracked concrete of at least 4 inches thickness and 3,000 psi. If we hit a void, aggregate pocket, or hairline crack under the anchor zone, we relocate the anchor or, in extreme cases, saw-cut and repour that footprint. Trying to torque an anchor into weak concrete is how a column ends up leaning six months after install and how a driveshaft-drop job ends up ugly. This is not a corner we cut.
Arm restraints and load points
The arms of a 2-post — the swing arms with the pads that meet the vehicle’s frame lift points — are held in place under load by mechanical restraints, usually gear-tooth pawls that lock the arm rotation when weight comes onto the pads. The wrong way to lift is to eyeball the frame and land the pad wherever it looks right. The right way is to reference the manufacturer’s under-body lifting-point diagram — every vehicle has one, and reputable service manuals show it — and put the pads only there. For transmission work specifically, we set the pads slightly rearward of center of gravity so the driveshaft area is fully accessible without the vehicle wanting to nose down when the trans and torque converter come out.
Center of gravity shift during transmission drop
Here is the specific safety point the northern Missouri shop owner asked us to double-check: when you pull a transmission out of a rear-wheel-drive vehicle on a 2-post, you remove a couple hundred pounds from a spot behind the center of gravity. The vehicle wants to teeter forward. On a properly balanced setup with pads at the manufacturer’s lift points and a slight rearward bias, this is a manageable shift you’ll barely feel. On an incorrectly balanced setup — pads too far forward, or a heavy front engine that already had the balance nose-heavy — pulling the trans out can lift the rear pads slightly off the frame. Never work under a home car lift for garage 2-post that is holding a vehicle you haven’t verified is balanced. A quick shake of the raised vehicle from the front bumper tells you: if it’s stable, it’s balanced. If it rocks, come back down and re-pad.
Safety locks and never trust hydraulics
Every 2-post has mechanical safety locks that engage automatically at height. On overhead configurations they’re pawls on the inside face of each column that click into slots. On baseplate configurations they’re the same mechanism, sometimes with slightly different actuation. The rule: once at working height, always lower onto the locks before you get under the vehicle. Never trust the hydraulic cylinder alone to hold the load. If a hose blows or a check valve fails while you’re under a trans, the locks are what save you.
