This piece walks two realistic build-out sequences side-by-side so a fleet operator can plan the two-year investment path instead of the one-lift snapshot. Why CV axle work needs a specific lift setup

CV axle and half-shaft replacement is a wheels-free job that also requires roughly two feet of side clearance for the shaft to slide out of the differential or transaxle. On the wrong hydraulic lift automotive that clearance is blocked by the column, and the technician ends up pulling the shaft at an angle that damages the boot or the tripod bearing. This is the number-one reason a small-fleet in-house tech ends up doing three-hour half-shaft jobs that should take 90 minutes. The lift geometry is fighting the work.

The right lift for CV axle work is an asymmetric two-post with the columns rotated so the door opens clear of the column, giving you both wheels-free and side clearance in one setup. Rotary SPOA and Challenger CL-series asymmetric lifts are both engineered for this. Symmetric two-posts work but are slower because you fight the column geometry every job. Four-posts are wrong for CV axle work because you would need a rolling jack for wheels-free, adding cycle time on every axle service. This is why the sequencing question matters.

Sequence A: buy the small lift first, upgrade later

A common Sioux City small-fleet starter path is to install a 9,000-pound symmetric two-post in year one because it is the cheapest hydraulic lift automotive that fits a 12-foot ceiling, then discover in year two that half-shaft work on their three-quarter-ton fleet is fighting the column and upgrade to a 12K asymmetric. Total spend across both lifts is roughly 160 percent of what a single-lift buy of the 12K asymmetric would have cost, and you have a 9K lift you now have to sell used or move to a secondary bay you may not have.

The counterargument for Sequence A is cash flow: year-one budget only accommodates the smaller lift and the fleet operator plans to upgrade when the finance cycle allows. That is a legitimate reason if the cash constraint is real, and we can structure a trade-in on the 9K when the 12K goes in later. But if the constraint is preference rather than hard budget, Sequence A is the more expensive path. We tell fleet operators this even when it means a smaller first invoice for us. The math is the math.

Sequence B: buy the right lift once

A 12,000-pound asymmetric two-post from Rotary or Challenger sized for a Sioux City small fleet lands in an honest four-figure range delivered and installed. That includes the asymmetric columns, three-stage front arms with polyurethane pads, positive-engagement lock ladder, and factory-shipped truck adapters. Financing at zero percent APR for 12 months with a 90-day deferred first payment lets a fleet operator absorb the full purchase across the first winter without hitting operating cash. This is Sequence B — buy the correct hydraulic lift automotive on day one.

Sequence B total spend across ten years is 60 to 65 percent of Sequence A total spend, because you never buy the second lift. Downstream, when the fleet grows to 25-plus vehicles and a second bay is warranted, that second lift is spec’d around a different job type — typically a four-post for alignment or long-truck work — not as a replacement for the first. The two lifts complement each other instead of one replacing the other. This is what fleet capex should look like.

Bay dimensions and column footprint

A 12K asymmetric hydraulic lift automotive install needs a bay of at least 26 feet deep by 15 feet wide with 12 feet 3 inches of clearance to any overhead obstruction. Column centerline spacing is 112 inches for a standard asymmetric and 118 inches for the extended-width variant that fits duallies. The anchor pattern per column is four 3/4-inch mechanical or epoxy anchors set into concrete a minimum of 4 inches thick at 3,000 PSI. Sioux City industrial buildings from the 1990s and later almost always meet this; older buildings need a slab check.

Overhead clearance is the sneaky one. A 12K lift measures 145 inches to the top of the equalization tube, which is the highest fixed point when the lift is at rest. Add the height of a raised vehicle on top of that and you are at 195 inches (16 feet 3 inches) or higher for a full-size pickup. Your ceiling truss, HVAC duct, lighting, and sprinkler heads all have to clear this. Most Sioux City fleet shops have the room. Some tenant-fit-out spaces do not. Powerpack, hydraulics, and cycle time

What matters more than raw cycle time is the pump’s tolerance for internal bypass over years of use. A quality Rotary or Challenger powerpack holds its rated flow for a decade before showing measurable bypass. A cheap import powerpack starts bypassing at 18 months, which manifests as a lift that drifts down slowly when parked at height. This is the failure mode that appears on the calls we get from shops with unbranded lifts — pump bypassing, cylinder holding, no clear diagnostic path. Buy the powerpack quality, not the horsepower number.

What we do at year three

A hydraulic lift automotive in a Sioux City fleet shop at year three needs an ANSI ALOIM inspection and a first hydraulic fluid change if the shop is running high cycles. The inspection is a two-hour job that covers cables, sheaves, safety ladders, arm restraints, and control circuits, plus a load test at rated capacity. Findings are written up and handed to the fleet operator for insurance and internal safety records. On our own install base we schedule these automatically. On lifts we did not install, we do them by appointment at a flat per-lift rate.

At year five to seven, expect a cable set replacement on high-cycle lifts and a hydraulic seal kit refresh.
