Why Collectors End Up on Four Posts
Almost every collector who calls us starts the conversation asking about a two-post, because that’s what they’ve seen in every shop they’ve ever walked into. Then we ask how long a car is going to sit up in the air. If the answer is “a couple of months over winter,” the two-post is the wrong tool. Two-posts hold a vehicle by its pinch welds or frame rails, and while a properly adjusted set of arms will hold indefinitely, we don’t love the idea of a 3,400 lb car balanced on four contact pads in an unheated Iowa outbuilding for a season.
A four-post carries the car on its own tires, on runways, with the load path going straight down through four columns into the slab. That’s why it dominates the collector market. The runways also give you a stable place to set jack trays, so you can still lift a wheel off when you need to rotate tires or pull a brake drum. The collector we worked with along the river settled on an 8,000 lb capacity unit with a 168-inch runway, which swallowed his longest car with room to walk around the nose. He set the second bay up as a pure storage stack and left the first one free for service work. That split — one lift for parking, one for wrenching — is the layout we recommend more than any other.
Brand History Actually Matters Here
People roll their eyes when we bring up brand lineage, but with lifts it’s a practical concern rather than a snob concern. The modern automotive lift traces back to a single-post hydraulic inground design that Rotary put into service in the 1920s, and for the better part of a century the industry has been iterating on that same basic idea: pressurized fluid, a cylinder, and a mechanical safety that catches the load if the hydraulics ever let go. Rotary and Challenger built their reputations in commercial shops, where a lift cycles thirty times a day. BendPak and Atlas built theirs in the home and enthusiast market, where the duty cycle is lighter but the buyer expects a finished-looking product and a price that makes sense for a private garage.
What that history buys you is a parts pipeline. A company that’s been building the same product family for decades has cylinders, cables, latch assemblies, and power units on shelves for units built fifteen and twenty years ago. A no-name import sold under a rotating series of house brands does not. We’ve had callers with a hydraulic lift automotive unit bought from a liquidator who can’t identify the manufacturer at all — no data plate, no serial, nothing. At that point we’re measuring cylinder bore, rod diameter, and port thread by hand and building a seal kit from generic stock. It’s doable. The Install: Slab, Power, and Ceiling
Three things decide whether an install goes smoothly, and we ask about all three before we quote. First, the slab. Most four-posts in the 8,000 to 9,000 lb range want four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and a lot of older Iowa outbuildings poured in the seventies come in at three and a half with questionable mix. We core-drill or hammer-test when there’s doubt. Freestanding four-posts technically don’t require anchoring the way a two-post does, but we anchor anyway when the slab allows it — it takes the wobble out and it’s cheap insurance.
Second, power. Most residential units run 220V single phase and pull modest amperage, but the collector we mentioned had a subpanel that was already loaded down with a welder, a compressor, and a dust collector. He ran a dedicated 20-amp 220 circuit before we showed up, which saved everyone a return trip. Third, ceiling height. This is where people get burned. Take your tallest vehicle’s height, add the lift’s maximum rise, add a few inches of clearance, and compare that to the underside of your lowest obstruction — not the peak of the roof, the garage door track or the light fixture. If you’re stacking cars, the top car’s roof plus the bottom car’s height plus runway thickness has to clear. We’ve measured plenty of garages where twelve inches decided the whole project.
First Year of Daily Maintenance
The maintenance list for a hydraulic lift automotive owner is genuinely short, which is why so many owners skip it entirely and then call us at month eighteen wondering why the thing drifts. Weekly: look at the cables. On a four-post, four equalizer cables keep the runways level, and they should have consistent tension and no broken strands at the sheaves. Run your gloved hand along them — a frayed strand will grab. Monthly: check the fluid level with the lift fully lowered, not raised. Raising the lift pulls fluid into the cylinder and gives you a false low reading, and we’ve watched people overfill a reservoir badly that way.
Quarterly: grease the sheave pins and slider blocks, and cycle the safety latches through every position while listening for all four to engage at the same moment. If one lags, the cable on that corner has stretched and needs adjustment. Annually: inspect the cylinder rod for pitting and the anchor bolts for torque, and change the hydraulic fluid if the unit sees regular use. Our collector had done maybe half of that in his first year — he’d been diligent about the cables and completely forgotten about the latches. Two of them were sticking from dust and light corrosion, which took us fifteen minutes with solvent and lubricant to sort out. That’s the difference between a maintenance visit and an emergency call.
What Actually Fails, and When
Across every service call we log, the failure list is remarkably consistent. Cylinder seals lead the pack. A rod seal weeping down the outside of the cylinder is the visible version, and it’s usually a cheap fix. The one that catches people out is an internal bypass, where the piston seal has failed and fluid slips past inside the cylinder instead of leaking out. The symptom is a lift that goes up fine but settles slowly overnight, or a pump that runs and runs without much rise. We took a call recently from a four-post owner down south with exactly that — a leaking bypass on an Atlas, and he’d already bought the seal kit himself. The kit is the easy part. Pulling the cylinder, honing the bore if it’s scored, and getting the seals in without nicking a lip is the part that separates a two-hour job from a three-day one.
Second on the list is the power unit. Pumps burn out, motors fail, and lowering valves stick. We’ve talked owners through freeing a stuck lowering valve over the phone more than once, usually to get a car off a stranded lift before we can schedule a visit. Third is cables. Cables stretch, then fray, then snap — and they snap at the swage or at a sheave, almost never in the middle of a run. Replace them in sets, never singly.
