A hydraulic lift automotive install is one of those purchases a shop owner second-guesses right up until the first vehicle goes in the air — and then never thinks about again, at least if it was specified correctly. We spent last year walking an RV and trailer service shop in southwest Iowa through exactly that process, from the first phone call about slab thickness through their first transmission service twelve months later. They came in convinced they wanted one configuration and left with another, and the reason why is worth explaining in detail. This is the full story of that first year: what we recommended, what they pushed back on, what broke, what didn’t, and what we’d tell the next shop in the same position.

Why an RV and Trailer Shop Needed a Different Answer

Most of the shops we outfit in Iowa run a predictable vehicle mix: passenger cars, half-ton pickups, the occasional dually. This southwest Iowa operation was different. Their bread and butter was towable trailers, Class C motorhomes, and the tow vehicles that pull them — which meant a huge spread in wheelbase, weight distribution, and, critically, vehicle height. A Class C is not going on a two-post, but the F-350 that hauls a fifth wheel absolutely is, and so is the Transit-based chassis they service constantly. That mix is what drove the entire specification conversation.

The owner called us in early spring assuming he needed a 12,000 lb two-post and that was the end of the discussion. What we actually spent forty minutes on was ceiling height. His building was a converted implement dealership with a 14-foot clear span in the main bay, but the sprinkler drops hung down to about 12 feet 4 inches in two spots — right where a lift would logically go. That single measurement reshapes what kind of hydraulic lift automotive equipment makes sense, because an overhead two-post needs vertical clearance for the crossbeam and the equalization cables that run through it. We asked him to measure to the lowest obstruction, not the deck, and to send photos. He sent them the next morning.

Overhead vs. Baseplate: The Decision That Defined the Year

Overhead two-post lifts run the hydraulic hose and equalization cables through a crossbeam at the top of the columns. Baseplate models route everything through a low steel plate that sits on the floor between the columns. Both designs are proven; both are sold by every reputable manufacturer. The tradeoff is straightforward and it comes down to what you’d rather bump into — the ceiling or the floor.

For this shop, the overhead option had a real problem. Their tallest regular customer vehicle was a high-roof cargo van conversion at roughly 10 feet 6 inches. Add lift travel and you’re pressing hard against those sprinkler drops. The overhead crossbeam also acts as a height stop, which is a genuine safety feature in most shops but a liability when your customers routinely drive tall vehicles. Baseplate removed that constraint entirely. The downside is the floor plate: you’re stepping over about an inch and a quarter of steel every time you cross the bay, and rolling a transmission jack across it takes intention. We told him plainly that a lot of techs hate baseplate for exactly that reason. He went with baseplate anyway, and a year in he says it was the right call. Slab, Anchors, and the Part Nobody Budgets For

Here’s what actually delayed the install by three weeks: concrete. The original implement building had a 4-inch slab in the section he wanted to use, poured sometime in the 1970s, with no documented reinforcement. Manufacturer specs for a 12,000 lb two-post generally call for a minimum of 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and “generally” is doing a lot of work in that sentence — the actual number varies by model and you need to read the specific manual, not a forum post.

We cored two test samples. The slab measured 4 and 3/8 inches in one spot and just under 4 in the other, with visible cracking near a floor drain. That’s not a slab you anchor a lift to and walk away from. The fix was cutting out two 6-foot-square pads and pouring new footings at 8 inches with rebar, which added a meaningful chunk to the project — think low four figures for the concrete work in that part of the state, though it varies with contractor availability and how far they have to truck material. Every shop owner we’ve worked with underestimates this line item. Budget for concrete evaluation before you budget for the lift itself. Any hydraulic lift automotive installation is only as good as what’s underneath it, and anchoring into a marginal slab is how columns walk over five years.

The First Transmission Service on the New Lift

About four months after install, they pulled the first automatic out of a 3/4-ton tow rig. Transmission work is where a two-post earns its money compared to a four-post or a mid-rise, because you need unobstructed access to the entire underside and room to swing a transmission jack in from the side. On a four-post, the runways are in the way. On a mid-rise scissor, the platform is in the way. Two-post is the only configuration that gives you a genuinely open underbody.

What surprised the owner was arm reach, not capacity. Lifting a long-wheelbase pickup and getting the arms to the correct pinch weld points required the asymmetric front arms to swing further than he’d anticipated, and on the first try he had the truck positioned about eight inches too far forward. We walked him through re-spotting it over the phone. The other thing he learned quickly: with a transmission out, the vehicle’s center of gravity shifts rearward significantly. That’s not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to double-check that all four arm restraints are engaged and that the lift is set on its mechanical locks — never held on hydraulic pressure alone. We say this constantly and shops still get lazy about it. The locks exist because hydraulics fail.

What Went Wrong: A Bypassing Pump at Month Nine

Nine months in, he called on a Tuesday morning: the lift wouldn’t hold, drifting down maybe an inch every couple of minutes with a loaded truck up. Classic symptom set. We hear some version of this call several times a month, and the diagnostic path is nearly always the same.

Slow drift with no visible external leak usually points to one of three things: internal bypass at the cylinder seals, a lowering valve that isn’t seating fully, or contamination holding a check valve open. We had him check the obvious first — no fluid on the floor, no wet columns, reservoir level normal. That pushed us toward the valve. He pulled the lowering valve, found a small piece of debris sitting on the seat, cleaned it, reinstalled, and the drift stopped. Total cost: nothing but an hour of his time. Maintenance That Actually Matters in Year One

The manufacturer maintenance schedule for a two-post is short, and most of it takes fifteen minutes a month. Check the fluid level with the lift fully lowered, not raised — raised readings will fool you into overfilling and then it vents out the cap. Inspect the equalization cables for fraying at the sheaves. Grease the carriage slide blocks or check the roller wear pads depending on your model. Verify every lock engages audibly through the full travel. Look at the anchor bolts for any gap between the base plate and the concrete.

That last one is the sleeper. If you see daylight under a base plate or the anchor has backed off even slightly, stop using the lift and call somebody. Anchor movement is the single most common precursor to a column failure, and it almost always announces itself before anything catastrophic happens. This shop caught a quarter-turn of loosening on one anchor at their six-month check, re-torqued it to spec, and it hasn’t moved since. We also strongly recommend an annual inspection by a qualified inspector — in Iowa that’s not universally mandated for every shop, but your insurance carrier may have opinions, and having documentation matters if anything ever goes sideways. What We’d Tell the Next Southwest Iowa Shop

Measure your ceiling to the lowest obstruction before you shop. Not the deck, not the joist — the sprinkler head, the light fixture, the door track, whatever hangs lowest in the footprint where the lift will live. That number decides overhead versus baseplate faster than any other single input, and it’s the one people guess at.

Second: core your concrete or at minimum have someone who knows what they’re looking at evaluate it. Third: buy more capacity than you think you need, but be honest about what you actually service. A 15,000 lb unit is overkill for a shop doing half-tons and it costs more to install because the footprint and anchor requirements grow. Fourth: buy from someone who will answer the phone nine months later when the pump bypasses.
