A collector in West Des Moines called us in the spring about a hydraulic lift automotive install for a detached three-car garage holding six vehicles on rotation — a couple of air-cooled cars, a mid-sixties convertible, and a modern daily that kept getting parked outside because there was nowhere to put it. He wanted storage first and service capability second, and he had a stack of manufacturer PDFs and no idea which numbers actually mattered. We ended up spending an hour on a site survey before quoting anything. What follows is that whole first year, told honestly: what the survey found, what we changed before install day, what commissioning looked like, and how the first real job went when a wheel bearing started howling.

The Site Survey: One Hour That Changed the Order

We showed up with a tape, a laser, and a rotary hammer. The garage was a nice building — insulated, drywalled, poured in the mid-2000s — and the owner assumed it was ready. It mostly was, but three things came out of the survey that changed the order sheet. First, the clear height was 11 feet 4 inches to the bottom of the door track, not the 12 feet he’d measured to the ceiling drywall. That ruled out the taller service-height four-post he’d been eyeing if he ever wanted to stack a truck on top.

Second, the overhead door opened directly into the intended lift bay. The runways would have cleared, but the open door panels rode down into the space where the rear of an upper vehicle would sit. Rotating the layout ninety degrees fixed it without buying anything. Third, the floor had a pronounced slope toward the door — about an inch and a half over the twenty-foot bay, which is normal drainage design and a real nuisance for a four-post. We planned for shim packs under the two low-side columns from the start rather than discovering it on install day. None of these were expensive problems. All three would have been expensive surprises. That’s the entire argument for a site survey on any hydraulic lift automotive project, and it’s why we don’t quote sight-unseen in central Iowa when we can help it.

Choosing Storage Height Versus Service Height

With 11 feet 4 inches of real clearance, the math got specific. Stacking two vehicles requires the height of the lower car, plus the runway thickness, plus the height of the upper car, plus a safety margin. His tallest stored vehicle was about 55 inches. Two of those plus runway and clearance put him right at the edge. We went with a storage-height four-post rated at 8,000 lb with standard runways, which let him stack two low cars comfortably and gave him about waist-height access to any single vehicle for oil changes and inspections.

He gave up something real here, and it’s worth naming. A storage-height four-post does not put you at standing height under a car. For a collector who mostly wants floor space back and occasional undercar access, that’s a fair trade. For someone doing full service work every weekend, it isn’t — they should be buying a two-post or accepting a taller building. We told him that directly before he ordered, because the worst outcome in this business is a customer who’s technically got what he asked for and hates using it. He also added a set of rolling bridge jacks at order time, which turned out to be the single best decision of the year. Without them, a four-post is a parking structure. With them, it’s an actual service platform.

Prep Work Before Install Day

We gave him a short prep list about three weeks out and he knocked all of it out. Clear the bay completely, including the shelving on the back wall we’d need to route hoses past. Have the 220-volt single-phase circuit run and terminated in a junction box at the column location we marked with tape — his electrician handled that on a dedicated 30-amp breaker with a lockable disconnect. Verify the slab in the four column locations, which we’d already done with core samples showing a consistent five inches of good concrete. And decide, in advance, exactly which direction the vehicle drives on, because that determines which end the power unit and ladder-side controls live on.

That last one sounds trivial and it isn’t. We’ve come back to relocate a power unit because the owner discovered the control side blocked the walkway to his workbench. Ten minutes of thinking on survey day prevents that. We also asked him to have a bucket and rags ready and to plan on not parking anything in the garage for two days. Install of a four-post typically runs four to six hours for our crew once the site is genuinely ready; it stretches into a second day when it isn’t. Prep is the difference. Anyone considering a hydraulic lift automotive purchase should treat the prep list as part of the product, not as homework the installer dumped on them. Install Day and Commissioning

The crew set columns first, plumbed the cables through the sheaves, hung the runways, and then spent what felt like a disproportionate amount of time on leveling and cable equalization. That’s normal and it’s the part that determines whether the unit is a pleasure or an annoyance for the next twenty years. A four-post with unequal cable tension will rack slightly on every cycle, chew the sheaves, and drop a lock latch out of sync. We set all four locks to engage within a quarter inch of each other and cycled the empty lift a dozen times, re-checking tension after it settled.

Then we filled the reservoir, bled the cylinder, and ran the unit through full travel repeatedly with the bleeder cracked until the rise was smooth and silent. Air in a fresh system is the most common cause of a jerky first month, and it’s completely avoidable if the installer is patient. We loaded a test vehicle, cycled it, checked lock engagement under load, verified the lowering rate, and walked the owner through the sequence: raise past the lock, lower onto the locks, always work off the locks and never off hydraulic pressure. We also showed him the manual lock release and had him do it himself twice. Every hydraulic lift automotive owner should be able to lower their own equipment in a power outage without calling anybody, and five minutes of instruction at commissioning is when they learn it.

Months Two Through Eight: What Living With It Was Actually Like

He called twice in the first two months, both times for reasonable reasons. The first was a small weep at a hose fitting that had backed off a quarter turn as the system settled — a two-minute fix with a wrench that we talked him through on the phone. The second was a question about drip trays, because a slow oil seep from the stored car on top was landing on the hood of the car below. We sent a set of runway drip trays and that was the end of it. Neither call was a defect. Both were the normal settling-in of new equipment.

The real change was behavioral. He stopped rotating cars in and out of the driveway. Winter storage stopped being a Tetris problem. He started doing his own oil changes again because rolling under a car at waist height beats crawling on cardboard. He also, predictably, bought a seventh vehicle, which is what happens to everyone who solves their space problem. On maintenance, we set him up with a simple routine: check the reservoir level monthly, wipe and inspect the cables for broken strands or corrosion every few months, grease the sheave pins twice a year, and change the hydraulic fluid at the interval in his manual. Cables are the part collectors ignore most and the part that fails most dramatically — we’ve had calls where someone ran a new cable and it snapped shortly after because the sheaves were worn and never inspected. The First Wheel Bearing Job

Late in the fall the daily driver started making the classic wheel bearing drone — quiet at low speed, rising with road speed, changing pitch on a gentle curve. This was the first job that tested whether a storage-height four-post could do real work, and the rolling bridge jacks earned their money.

He drove up, set the lift on the second lock, rolled a bridge jack under the front subframe pads, and lifted the front wheels clear of the runway. From there it was an ordinary hub job: wheel off, caliper and bracket off and hung, rotor off, three hub bolts and the axle nut, then a press-in or bolt-on hub depending on the vehicle. Working at that height meant sitting on a stool rather than lying on the floor, which for a guy in his sixties was the whole point. The one thing that made it awkward was torquing the axle nut to spec with the wheel in the air; he ended up lowering onto the runway, seating the nut, then lifting again. That’s a normal workflow on a four-post and it’s worth knowing before you assume the setup does everything a two-post does. It doesn’t. But for a collector whose priority is storage with real service capability as a bonus, this hydraulic lift automotive configuration hit the target exactly. A year in, he’s used it more than he expected and complained about it less. That’s about the best review any piece of shop equipment gets.
