Suspension and shock replacement is deceptively hard on lifting equipment. Unlike an oil change, where the vehicle goes up, sits still, and comes down, spring and strut work involves torque, prying, air hammers, and sometimes a sledge. Every one of those inputs pushes the vehicle laterally against the arms and the carriage. On a fleet vehicle that has spent ten winters on gravel roads between Iowa and Missouri, the fasteners are seized, and the tech is applying real force at odd angles. If the arm restraints are worn or the pads are cracked and no longer gripping the pinch weld, that’s exactly the moment a vehicle shifts.

Bypassing Pumps, Sinking Carriages, and What They Actually Mean
The most common call we take is some version of “it goes up but won’t stay up,” or “the pump runs and the lift barely moves.” Both are usually described as the pump bypassing. In plain terms, fluid that should be pushing the piston is instead taking a shortcut back to the reservoir. That can happen at the pump’s internal relief, at a stuck lowering valve, or past the seals inside the cylinder itself. Distinguishing internal cylinder bypass from a valve problem saves real money.
