When a technician calls us saying their lift won’t rise all the way or drifts down overnight, hydraulic lift cylinder troubleshooting is almost always where the conversation starts. The cylinder does the heavy lifting, literally, and when it starts acting up, everything else on the lift feels the effects. Start With Symptoms, Not Assumptions

Before you touch a wrench, write down exactly what the lift is doing. Is it slow to rise, slow to lower, dropping under load, leaking fluid, or making noise partway through the stroke? Each symptom points to a different part of the system, and jumping straight to “replace the cylinder” wastes money more often than it solves anything. We’ve had customers order a full cylinder assembly when the real issue was a clogged filter or a loose fitting costing a fraction as much.

Good hydraulic lift cylinder troubleshooting always begins with a visual inspection. Look for wet spots on the cylinder body, around the rod seal, and at every hose connection. Check the fluid level and color in the reservoir — milky or foamy fluid usually means water contamination, while dark, gritty fluid points to internal wear. Cycle the lift empty a few times and watch the rod extend and retract. A rod that wobbles, sticks, or extends unevenly compared to its neighbor cylinder is telling you something specific, and that observation should guide every step that follows rather than guessing at parts.

Slow Rise or Won’t Reach Full Height

A lift that creeps up slowly or stalls before reaching full height is usually fighting either low fluid, air in the system, or a worn pump. Check the reservoir first — low fluid means the pump is drawing air along with oil, which shows up as spongy, inconsistent movement. Top it off with the correct fluid type and cycle the lift several times to bleed trapped air out of the lines.

If fluid level isn’t the culprit, look at the check valve and the flow control valve near the power unit. A partially stuck check valve lets fluid bleed back instead of holding pressure, which shows up as a slow climb that never quite finishes. We also see this on older two-post lifts where the equalizer cable has stretched, throwing off the timing between cylinders even though the hydraulics themselves are fine. Rule out the cable and pulley system before you assume the cylinder is bad — it’s a common misdiagnosis that leads to unnecessary teardown.

Lift Drifts or Drops Under Load

Drift is the symptom that worries shop owners most, and rightly so. If a lift settles a few inches after being raised and left overnight, or drops noticeably with a vehicle on it, the internal seals in the cylinder have likely worn to the point they can’t hold pressure anymore. Rod seals and piston seals degrade with age, heat cycling, and contaminated fluid, and once they start leaking internally, no amount of external adjustment fixes it.

Before condemning the cylinder outright, verify the problem isn’t in the lock mechanism or the lowering valve, which can mimic drift symptoms on a two-post lift. Pull the safety locks manually and see if the lift still settles — if it does, the hydraulics are the issue. At that point, a reseal kit can sometimes bring an otherwise sound cylinder back to spec, but if the bore is scored or pitted, replacement is the safer call. External Leaks and Seal Failure

External leaks are usually easier to diagnose than internal drift because you can see and often smell where the fluid is coming from. A wet rod on the way down that wipes clean on the way up typically points to a failing wiper seal letting contamination past. Fluid pooling at a fitting or hose connection is often just a loose connection or a cracked hose rather than the cylinder itself.

If the leak is coming from the rod seal itself, the fix depends on how bad the wear is. Minor seepage might be manageable with a seal kit and a clean, unscored rod surface. But once a rod is nicked, corroded, or pitted from sitting outside or in a humid shop, seals won’t hold no matter how many times you replace them — the rod itself has to be addressed or the cylinder swapped. This is one of the most common calls we get for hydraulic lift cylinder troubleshooting, and it’s usually preventable with routine wipe-downs and keeping the lift covered when not in use.

Uneven Lifting Between Cylinders

On two-post and four-post lifts with multiple cylinders working together, uneven rise is a red flag that shouldn’t be ignored. It usually means one cylinder is drawing more fluid than the other, either from an internal leak, a partially blocked line, or an equalization system out of adjustment. Running a lift in this condition stresses the arms and the vehicle sitting on it, so it’s worth stopping and diagnosing rather than pushing through.

Isolate each cylinder if the lift design allows it, and compare rise speed side by side. If one is noticeably slower, trace its supply line back toward the power unit checking for kinks, worn hoses, or a stuck flow divider. Fluid Contamination and Filter Problems

Contaminated hydraulic fluid is behind more cylinder failures than most shop owners realize. Dirt, metal shavings, and moisture accelerate seal wear from the inside, turning what should be a ten-year cylinder into a two-year replacement. If you’re pulling dark, gritty, or milky fluid out of a reservoir, that’s your first clue the cylinder damage may already be underway even if it hasn’t started leaking yet.

Flush the system and replace the filter whenever you find contaminated fluid, and use only the fluid type specified by the lift manufacturer — mixing types can cause seals to swell or shrink unpredictably. But once you’re looking at a scored bore, a bent rod, or a lift that’s dropping with vehicles on it, it’s time to bring in a certified technician.
