Before you panic and start ordering parts, know this: most leaks have a clear, findable source, and most of them are fixable without replacing the whole unit. Start With Where the Fluid Actually Shows Up

Good hydraulic lift leak troubleshooting starts with location, not assumption. Wipe every visible surface dry, run the lift through a full cycle, and watch closely as it moves. A leak at the base of the cylinder points to a rod seal or packing gland. Fluid pooling near a hose fitting almost always means a loose connection or a worn crimp. If it’s coming from the power unit itself, you’re probably looking at a bad seal inside the pump or a cracked reservoir.

Don’t skip this step even if you think you already know the source. We’ve been called out for “cylinder leaks” that turned out to be a fitting three feet away, with fluid running down the cylinder wall and pooling at the base, making everyone assume the seal was bad. Clean everything, cycle it slowly, and trace the fluid path backward to its true origin before you order a single part. This is the single biggest time-saver in the whole troubleshooting process.

Cylinder Seals Are the Most Common Culprit

On two-post and in-ground lifts especially, the hydraulic cylinder is where we find the majority of real leaks. Rubber seals harden and shrink over years of heat cycling and UV exposure, and once they lose their seal, fluid weeps past the piston every time the lift cycles under load. This shows up as fluid on the floor directly below the cylinder, or as a slow drip along the piston rod when the lift is raised.

The fix is usually a seal kit rebuild rather than a full cylinder replacement, and it’s a job we do routinely in shops across the state. If the cylinder bore itself is scored or pitted, a seal kit won’t hold for long and you’ll want to talk about a replacement cylinder instead. Hose and Fitting Failures Are the Easy Wins

Compared to cylinder work, a leaking hose or fitting is the good news scenario. Vibration, age, and the constant flexing of hydraulic lines eventually work fittings loose or crack the hose material near a crimp. These leaks are usually easy to spot because the fluid trail is obvious and doesn’t reappear the moment you tighten things down.

Check every fitting with a wrench, not just by eye — a fitting can look snug and still be a quarter-turn loose. If tightening doesn’t stop it, replace the hose rather than patching it; hydraulic hose that’s cracking near one fitting is usually near the end of its service life everywhere else too. This is the cheapest and fastest category of hydraulic lift leak troubleshooting to resolve, and it’s worth ruling out first before you assume you’re facing a cylinder rebuild.

Don’t Confuse Normal Weep With an Actual Leak

Not every damp spot means trouble. Some lifts run a small amount of residual oil film on the cylinder rod as part of normal operation — it lubricates the seal and isn’t the same as an active, growing leak. The distinction matters because we’ve seen shops replace perfectly good cylinders chasing a film that was never going to get worse.

The test is simple: wipe it dry, mark the spot, and watch it over a few cycles and a few days. If the wet spot stays the same size and doesn’t drip onto the floor, it’s likely normal weep. If it grows, drips, or leaves a puddle, it’s an actual leak that needs attention. Knowing this difference before you call a technician saves you a service visit and helps you describe the problem accurately when you do need one.

Check the Power Unit and Reservoir Too

It’s easy to focus entirely on the cylinder and hoses and forget the power unit sitting quietly in the corner. Reservoirs can develop cracks from age or impact, and internal pump seals fail just like cylinder seals do, letting fluid seep out around the motor mount or base plate. A dropping fluid level with no visible external leak near the lift arms is a strong hint the problem is at the power unit.

Pull the cover, check the reservoir for cracks or a loose drain plug, and look at the fluid level against the sight gauge. Low fluid combined with jerky or slow lift operation often means air has entered the system through the same opening the fluid is escaping from, which compounds the problem. This part of hydraulic lift leak troubleshooting gets skipped often because the power unit is out of sight, but it deserves the same attention as the cylinder itself.

Know When to Rebuild vs. Replace

Once you’ve found the source, the next decision is whether to repair it or replace the component. Seal kits are cost-effective and we recommend them whenever the cylinder bore and rod are still in good condition. But if you’re seeing scoring, pitting, or a cylinder that’s already been rebuilt once before, throwing another seal kit at it is usually a short-term fix that leaks again within a year.

The same logic applies to hoses and fittings — replace, don’t patch, and use fittings rated for your lift’s actual working pressure rather than generic hardware store parts.
