A cylinder can be leaking internally for months before anyone notices the vehicle settling a little lower than it used to. Techs get used to topping off fluid, bleeding a little air, and moving on with the day. That’s the trap. Fresh hydraulic fluid should be a clear amber or light gold color. If it’s turned dark, cloudy, or has a burnt smell, that’s contamination or heat breakdown, and it’s actively accelerating wear on your seals and internal cylinder walls every time the lift cycles. Milky or foamy fluid usually means water intrusion, which is common in Iowa shops with in-ground lifts or units near overhead doors that see winter slush tracked in constantly.

Metal particles in the fluid are the clearest sign of internal wear — that’s the cylinder wall or piston literally shedding material as the seals fail to keep things clean and lubricated.
