A lift installation electrical checklist is the difference between a power-up that just works and a service call two weeks in because a breaker keeps tripping or a motor hums but won’t lift. We’ve wired and commissioned lifts all over Iowa — dealership service bays in Des Moines, small independent shops in farm towns, and home garages outside Ames — and the electrical side is where DIY installs and rushed jobs go sideways most often. This checklist walks through exactly what we verify on every install before we ever flip a switch, so you can catch the same problems before they cost you a burned-up motor or a failed inspection.

Confirm Voltage and Phase Before the Lift Even Arrives

Every lift installation electrical checklist has to start before the crate shows up, because voltage and phase mismatches are the single most common wiring mistake we see. Most two-post and four-post lifts ship set up for 220-volt single-phase power, but some commercial units — especially heavier Rotary and Challenger models — are built for three-phase service. If your shop only has single-phase power and you order a three-phase unit, you’re either running a phase converter or sending the motor back.

Walk out to your electrical panel and read the main breaker rating, then find the sub-panel or dedicated circuit that will feed the lift. Compare that against the spec sheet for the exact model you’re buying, not a similar one — motor amperage varies between a 9,000 lb lift and a 12,000 lb lift even within the same product line. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, take a photo of your panel and call us before you order. We’d rather answer that question for free than have you return a motor because the power supply doesn’t match.

Size the Breaker and Wire Gauge Correctly

Undersized wire and the wrong breaker are the two things that cause nuisance trips, overheating, and in worst cases, melted insulation inside a wall or conduit run. Lift manufacturers specify a minimum wire gauge and breaker amperage for a reason, and that spec accounts for inrush current when the motor starts under load — not just steady running amps. Using a smaller gauge wire because it’s what you had in the shop is one of the most common shortcuts we see undone during troubleshooting calls.

As a rule, we run wire one size larger than the bare minimum whenever the run from the panel to the lift exceeds 50 feet, because voltage drop over distance can starve the motor even if the gauge technically meets code at the panel. A dedicated circuit — not one shared with an air compressor, welder, or shop lighting — is non-negotiable on any commercial lift, and we strongly recommend it on home-garage lifts too. Sharing a circuit is the fastest way to trip a breaker mid-lift with a vehicle in the air, which is a bad moment for it to happen.

Install a Properly Rated Disconnect Switch

A local disconnect switch near the lift, sized to match the motor’s full-load amperage, is required by most electrical codes and by common sense — you need a way to kill power to the unit without walking back to the main panel, especially during service or an emergency. This is a spot where our lift installation electrical checklist gets strict: the disconnect has to be within sight of the lift and rated for the motor’s actual draw, not just “close enough.”

We also check that the disconnect is lockable, particularly in commercial shops where multiple technicians share the bay. Lockout-tagout matters when someone’s got their hands inside a control box or working under a lift that’s mid-repair. On home installs this gets skipped constantly because people assume flipping the breaker is enough, but a dedicated disconnect at the lift is faster, safer, and it’s what an inspector will look for if your install ever gets checked.

Ground the Unit and Bond the Frame

Grounding gets overlooked more than almost anything else on this list, and it’s one of the most important items on any lift installation electrical checklist because a lift frame that isn’t properly grounded and bonded can become energized if there’s ever an internal short in the motor or control circuit. We verify a continuous ground path from the panel all the way to the lift’s frame, and we test it with a meter rather than assuming the conduit or armored cable is doing the job.

On concrete-anchored equipment, don’t rely on the anchor bolts as a ground path — they’re not rated for it and corrosion over time can break continuity anyway. Run a dedicated ground conductor sized to match your circuit, land it on the lift’s ground lug, and verify continuity with a meter before you ever power the unit up. This is a five-minute check that prevents a genuinely dangerous situation.

Check the Control Box Wiring and Motor Connections

Once power reaches the lift, the control box is where most home installers make small mistakes that cause big headaches — a reversed motor lead that makes the lift run backward, a loose terminal that arcs under load, or a limit switch wired out of sequence. Every control box we install gets opened up and every terminal gets checked with a screwdriver for tightness, because vibration during shipping loosens connections that were tight at the factory.

We also verify the up/down relay wiring matches the wiring diagram specific to that model — diagrams vary between Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas even for similarly rated lifts, and using a diagram for the wrong model is a fast way to wire something backward. If your lift arrived with a torn or missing wiring diagram, don’t guess — call the distributor or us and we’ll get you the correct one for your exact serial number.

Test Under No Load Before You Ever Drive a Vehicle On

Every single lift installation electrical checklist we run ends with a no-load test cycle, and this step should never be skipped regardless of how confident you are in the wiring. Run the lift up and down through a full cycle with nothing on the platforms, listening for grinding, watching for uneven arm travel, and confirming the motor doesn’t labor or trip the breaker. Any electrical issue — undersized wire, a loose connection, incorrect phase wiring — tends to show up immediately under this kind of test.

Check that safety locks engage properly at each height and that the lift responds correctly to the lower-lock release. If everything cycles clean two or three times in a row with no unusual heat at the motor housing or control box, you’re ready to load a vehicle. If anything feels off — even something minor like a hesitation on startup — stop and troubleshoot the electrical connections again rather than pushing forward. Know When to Call a Licensed Electrician or Installer

We’re not going to pretend every shop or home garage owner should DIY the electrical work on a lift install, and a good lift installation electrical checklist should tell you honestly where the line is. If your panel doesn’t have available capacity, if you’re dealing with three-phase conversion, or if local code requires a permitted electrical inspection for new circuits — which many Iowa municipalities do for commercial installs — that’s a licensed electrician’s job, not a checklist item to power through alone.
