A shop lift installation checklist is the difference between a lift that’s bolted, wired, and running by the end of the week and a project that stalls out because nobody checked the slab thickness first. Start With the Concrete, Not the Lift Brand

Every shop lift installation checklist has to start underground, because no lift performs better than the slab it sits on. Two-post lifts generally need a minimum of 4 inches of solid, unreinforced-mesh-only concrete, ideally 3,000 PSI or better, and the anchor pattern has to land in concrete that hasn’t been patched, cracked, or poured over an old trench. Four-post and scissor lifts spread weight more evenly but still need consistent slab thickness across the whole footprint, not just under the columns.

Measure from the floor to the lowest overhead obstruction directly above the intended lift footprint, not just the general ceiling height of the bay. Sprinkler heads are a common surprise, since fire code often requires clearance from the lift’s highest point, and moving a sprinkler line mid-project adds cost and delay nobody wants. We always ask for photos of the ceiling and any overhead obstructions during our planning calls, because a lift that looks perfect on paper can be a tight squeeze once it’s actually bolted to the floor.

Plan Bay Spacing and Traffic Flow

A lift installed in the wrong spot creates problems every single day it’s in use, even if the mechanical install itself is flawless. Walk your bay and think about door swing on the vehicle, technician movement around the lift arms, and whether a second bay or a walkway gets blocked when the lift is raised to full height. Consider how vehicles enter and exit the bay, especially if you’re running a two-post lift where drive-through clearance matters, or a four-post where ramp orientation is fixed once it’s installed. Getting this step right the first time avoids a costly repositioning project down the road.

Check Permits and Local Inspection Requirements

If anything feels off during the walkthrough, a hesitation, an uneven rise, or unusual noise, get it addressed immediately rather than putting it into daily service.
