Most people call us after they’ve already bought a lift, which is backwards. A proper lift installation site prep checklist starts before the purchase order goes out, not after the freight truck delivers a crate. We’ve seen shops order a lift based on a floor plan sketch that didn’t account for a support column, an overhead duct run, or a drain in exactly the wrong spot. Once the equipment is on site, options narrow fast, and re-routing electrical or moving a lift six feet gets expensive.

Running through the checklist early lets us catch problems while they’re still cheap to fix. That means confirming ceiling height with the vehicle raised and arms extended, checking the swing radius against neighboring bays, and verifying there’s a clear path to get the lift components into the building. On more than one job we’ve had to bring a two-post lift in through a bay door because a service door was two inches too narrow for the base plates. None of that is hard to check ahead of time — it just has to actually get checked, and that’s exactly what a written checklist is for.

Concrete Slab Requirements on Every Lift Installation Site Prep Checklist

The floor is the single most common failure point we run into. Every lift installation site prep checklist we use starts with slab thickness, age, and condition, because anchor bolts are only as strong as the concrete holding them. Most two-post and four-post lifts need a minimum slab thickness with proper PSI rated concrete, poured without excessive cracking, control joints too close to anchor points, or old patch work hiding underneath.

We ask shop owners to pull any records on when the slab was poured and by whom, and if that information doesn’t exist, we test on-site before drilling a single anchor. Air supply matters too if you’re running air-assisted locks or pneumatic accessories. A four-post lift with a tire rack attachment needs more headroom than a base two-post, and that difference matters when you’re working in an older Iowa building with lower trusses than a newer commercial shop.

We also factor in overhead doors and their tracks, since some garage door hardware hangs lower than the wall itself. We also look at how vehicles and technicians will actually move through the shop once the lift is in — where tool carts park, where hoses run, where a technician stands to operate the controls.
