Every week somebody calls our shop in Ames and asks for “the cable for a two-post lift,” and every week we have to slow the conversation down and start over. Ordering lift parts by serial number is the only method that reliably gets the correct component into your hands on the first try, because a single model designation can cover a decade of production with three or four different internal revisions. Why the Serial Plate Beats a Model Name Every Time

A model name is a marketing label. A serial number is a manufacturing record. When a lift builder changes a hydraulic cylinder supplier, revises a carriage casting, moves from a keyed sheave to a pressed bearing, or switches a power unit from a 2 HP to a 2.5 HP motor, the model badge on the column usually stays the same. The serial number is what shifts, and that is the field the factory parts department indexes against. So when we look up lift parts by serial number, we are not being difficult — we are reading the same record the manufacturer reads.

We see the cost of skipping that step constantly. A general repair shop in central Iowa ordered its own equalizer cables off a generic listing based on a model number stamped on a column. The cables arrived roughly eight inches too short because the lift had been built with taller columns in a later production run. Two weeks of downtime, a restocking fee, and a second freight charge later, they called us, we pulled the serial, and the correct cables shipped the next day. That is a common story, not an unusual one. The plate exists to prevent exactly that outcome, and it takes about ninety seconds to photograph.

Where the Plate Hides on Common Lift Types

Finding the tag is usually the hardest part of the whole process, mostly because it has spent fifteen years behind a layer of brake dust and undercoating overspray. On a two-post, look at the outside face of the powerside column, roughly chest height, or on the inside edge near the top plate. On four-post lifts, check the powerside column and also the crossmember or runway underside — some builders label the runway assembly separately from the frame. Scissor and mid-rise units frequently carry the tag on the base frame near the hydraulic connection, sometimes only visible with the lift raised.

Inground lifts are their own puzzle. The identifying data may be on the power unit cabinet rather than the lift itself, or on a plate cast into the superstructure that is now under the floor. When we work on older inground equipment we often reconstruct the identification from the power unit, the arm style, the saddle pattern, and the bolt spacing. Also check the power unit motor tag, the reservoir label, and any paperwork stapled inside the electrical box — installers used to leave the original invoice there, and that document alone can settle a serial question. If you find nothing on the first pass, wipe the columns down with brake cleaner and look again in raking light. Stamped numbers survive when printed labels do not.

What We Actually Need From You to Look It Up

First, a clear photo of the entire data plate — not a typed transcription, because a 6 and an 8 and a worn 5 all look alike in stamped steel, and one wrong digit sends us down the wrong branch of the parts tree. Second, the capacity as marked, since 9,000 lb and 10,000 lb versions of the same visual design use different sheaves, cables, and locking hardware. Third, a photo of the failed part still installed on the machine. Fourth, a photo of the whole lift from ten feet back.

That last one matters more than people expect. The wide shot tells us the column height, whether the overhead bar is a two-piece or single-piece design, whether the arms are three-stage or two-stage, and whether somebody has already replaced a component with a non-original substitute. Parts That Absolutely Require Serial Verification

Some components are forgiving. Rubber arm pads, most flow restrictors, and generic fittings will work across families. Others will not, and those are the ones that generate the frustrated second phone call. Cables and equalizer chains top the list, because length is measured to the eighth of an inch and varies with column height and sheave arrangement. Hydraulic cylinders come next — bore, stroke, rod diameter, port position, and mounting style all change between production runs while the outward silhouette stays identical.

Lock ladders, latch assemblies, and lock release cables are equally unforgiving, and they are safety components, so guessing is not acceptable. Carriage slide blocks, arm restraint gears, and overhead micro-switch assemblies also shift between revisions. Power units are their own category: voltage, phase, motor frame, reservoir capacity, and pump displacement have to match, and a mismatched unit can raise a lift beautifully while quietly overpressurizing a cylinder. What Happens When the Serial Number Is Gone

Plenty of the lifts we service in Iowa shops are twenty-five or thirty years old, and the tag has been painted over, sandblasted off, or lost when a column was replaced. That is not a dead end. We identify equipment by measurement all the time. Column height and cross-section, base plate bolt pattern, overhead assembly style, arm pin diameter, sheave count and diameter, cylinder rod diameter, and the casting marks on the carriage all narrow the field quickly. Manufacturers reused tooling, and that tooling leaves fingerprints.

We also keep our own history. If we installed or serviced the lift, our records may already hold the original serial, and a phone number or shop address can pull that up. Beyond that, the ANSI/ALI safety label set, the year of the building’s electrical service, and even the color of the paint can bracket a production window. When identification truly cannot be confirmed and the machine is a legacy design with no supported parts path, we say so plainly rather than selling you components that may not fit. Brand-Specific Quirks We Run Into Constantly

Rotary equipment is generally the friendliest to serial lookup — the numbering conventions are consistent, the parts breakdowns are thorough, and superseded part numbers are usually documented, so an SPO-series two-post from the nineties can still be supported with confidence. Challenger commercial lifts, including the heavier PKS-style configurations, are similar in that the serial reliably steers you to the right revision, though we always verify capacity separately because visually identical models span multiple ratings.

On the lighter side, BendPak and Atlas home-garage lifts have gone through frequent design refreshes, which means a five-year-old unit and a current-production unit sharing a model designation may not share a cylinder or a lock assembly.
