What the Safety Cam Actually Does

Every two-post lift uses a mechanical safety device to hold the carriage in place if hydraulic or cable pressure is lost. On most lifts this is a pivoting cam or pawl that engages a ladder of notches on the column as the carriage rises, and it retracts only when you pull the release handle or step on the release pedal. It’s a purely mechanical backup to the hydraulic system, and it’s the single most important safety feature on the lift because it’s what keeps a vehicle from free-falling if a hose blows or a cylinder seal fails.

Because it’s mechanical and exposed to years of grease, brake dust, and road salt tracked in on tires, it’s also one of the first things to start acting up. Lift safety cam troubleshooting almost always starts with understanding that the cam has to do two jobs perfectly every single cycle: engage instantly under load, and release cleanly and completely when you ask it to. If either half of that equation is off, you’ll notice it as either a lift that won’t come down or a lift that clunks and jerks going up. We treat this system as safety-critical, not cosmetic, and we recommend every shop owner in Iowa treat it the same way.

The Most Common Symptom: Lift Won’t Release

By far the most common call we get involves a lift that raises fine but won’t drop when the operator pulls the release. This is the classic lift safety cam troubleshooting scenario, and in our experience it traces back to one of three things almost every time. First, the release cable itself has stretched or frayed over years of use, so pulling the handle no longer moves the cam far enough to clear the column notch. Second, the pivot pin that the cam rotates on has rusted or packed with dried grease, so the cam physically can’t swing free even with full cable travel. Third — and this is the one people miss — the return spring that’s supposed to hold tension on the system has weakened or snapped, letting the cam drop back into engagement before the operator finishes lowering.

Our advice is to check these in order of ease: look at cable travel first, then inspect the pivot pin for movement, then check spring tension. If you’re not seeing full mechanical travel at the cam when the handle is pulled all the way, don’t force the lift down — that’s exactly how carriages get damaged or, worse, someone gets hurt. Iowa’s freeze-thaw cycle is brutal on any exposed cable and linkage, and we see a spike in these calls every spring as shops bring lifts back into heavy use after a slower winter.

Uneven Release on One Side

If one side of the lift releases and the other doesn’t, you’re dealing with a synchronization problem rather than a single failed part. Most two-post lifts tie both safety cams together through a cross cable or equalizer system, so both sides release at the same moment. When only one side hangs up, check that the cross cable hasn’t stretched unevenly or jumped off a pulley — this is common on older Rotary and Challenger units that have seen heavy daily use.

We also see this when a shop has replaced one cable but not its match on the other column, creating a slight length mismatch that throws off timing. Don’t try to compensate by yanking the handle harder — that just accelerates wear on the side that’s already binding and can mask a bigger problem until it fails without warning.

Cam Engaging Late or Skipping Notches

A cam that clunks hard into engagement, or seems to skip a notch before catching, points to wear on the cam’s teeth or on the column’s notch ladder itself. Years of engagement cycles wear down the leading edge of both parts, and eventually the geometry that used to catch cleanly starts slipping past before it grabs. This is a wear issue, not an adjustment issue, and it’s not something you fix with more grease.

Once we see rounded teeth on a cam during inspection, we replace it — full stop. This is not a component we recommend running to failure, because the failure mode is a vehicle dropping further than intended before the mechanism catches, which can shock-load the entire lift structure. If you’re inspecting your own equipment and you see any rounding, flat-spotting, or visible metal fatigue on the cam or the notches, that lift needs the part swapped before it goes back into daily service.

Cam Won’t Engage At All

Less common but more serious is a cam that never engages on the way up, meaning the lift is running on hydraulics alone with no mechanical backup. This usually means the cam is physically seized in the retracted position, often from a bent bracket, a broken spring, or debris jammed in the pivot area. A lift in this condition should be locked out and tagged immediately — it’s not a repair to schedule for next week.

We walk Iowa shops through a quick visual check: with the lift empty and slowly raised, watch the cam from the side and confirm it’s swinging into position against the column as each notch passes. If it’s not moving at all, or moving but not far enough to catch, shut the lift down. Preventive Checks That Catch Problems Early

Most of the failures above don’t happen overnight — they build over months of skipped inspections. Keep the pivot points lightly lubricated with the right grease (not WD-40, which attracts grit) and keep an eye on cable fraying anywhere along its length, not just at the ends.
