A good lift safety daily checklist takes about five minutes and it is the cheapest insurance any shop in Iowa will ever buy. We install and service lifts out of Ames, and in twenty-plus years of crawling under two-posts, four-posts, scissors, and ingrounds, we have almost never seen a lift fail without warning. There is nearly always a frayed cable strand, a weeping cylinder, a lock that clicked funny for three weeks, or an anchor bolt somebody kept meaning to snug. The failures we get called out for are the ones nobody looked at. So here is the routine we teach techs, written the way we would explain it standing in your bay with a cup of gas-station coffee.

Why a daily walkaround beats an annual inspection alone

An annual ALI-certified inspection is important, and we do plenty of them across central Iowa. But an inspector sees your lift once a year for maybe forty-five minutes. Your techs see it forty times a week. A cable does not go from perfect to broken in a day; it fails one wire at a time over months. A lock dog does not stop catching all at once; it drags, then clicks late, then skips one position, then skips two. The whole point of a lift safety daily checklist is to catch that middle stage — the annoying stage — while it is still a fifty-dollar part instead of a dropped vehicle and an OSHA conversation.

We also like the daily habit because it forces ownership. When one tech is responsible for the morning look, that person notices the new oil spot on the floor, the arm that swings a little too freely, the control handle that sticks. Shops that run a written routine catch problems in the first week. Shops that rely on “someone would say something” find out at 4:45 on a Friday with a customer’s truck in the air. Start on the floor: anchors, concrete, and housekeeping

Before anything moves, look down. On a two-post, check every anchor bolt for a visible gap under the baseplate, rust streaking, or a nut that has backed off. Concrete cracks radiating away from an anchor are a stop-work item, not a maybe — spalling around a bolt means the anchor is losing its grip and the column is relying on its neighbors. In older Iowa shops we run into 3.5-inch slabs poured decades ago, and those need honest evaluation. If you see hairline cracks growing month over month, take a photo with a date so you can prove to yourself whether it is moving.

Then clear the bay. Air hoses, drain pans, creepers, and extension cords under a lift are how a column gets bumped during descent and how a tech trips while backing out from under a raised vehicle. Wipe up hydraulic oil immediately, not because it looks bad but because a fresh puddle is data: it tells you which cylinder, hose, or fitting is weeping. Chalk-circle the spot and see if it comes back tomorrow. Cables, chains, and the equalization system

On a cable-driven two-post, run a gloved hand along each equalization cable where you can reach it and look at the full run with a flashlight. You are hunting for broken wire strands, kinks, flat spots, rust bloom, and birdcaging where the strands separate. Industry practice is simple: any broken strands in a single lay, or visible corrosion and deformation, means replace the cable — and replace both sides as a set, because they wore together. Check the sheaves too. A grooved, chewed-up sheave will eat a brand-new cable in months.

Chain-driven lifts get the same treatment with different symptoms. Look for stretched links, stiff spots that will not articulate, and side plates that have started to wear thin at the pins. On four-posts, uneven cable tension is what makes one runway lag the other, and that lag is your early warning. Also confirm the slack-cable safety mechanism is free to operate and not gummed up with grease and brake dust. Cables are the single most common wear part we ship out of our Ames warehouse, and almost every order comes from a shop that caught it during a morning walkaround.

Locks, arms, adapters, and the sounds that matter

Raise the empty lift and listen. You want to hear both locks clicking in unison as the carriages climb — steady, even, one click per position. A lock that clicks late, skips, or goes silent on one side is a shutdown item until it is diagnosed. Then lower onto locks and confirm the lift actually rests on steel, not on hydraulic pressure. Air-release lock cylinders and their lines should hold; a lock that will not release, or releases when it should not, points at a stuck cylinder or a leaking air line.

Next, the arms and pads. Swing arm restraints should engage and hold, not just flop. Screw pads and adapters should turn freely without wobble, and the rubber should still be rubber — cracked, oil-soaked, mushroom-shaped pads slip under load. Check that the correct adapter set is actually in the bay; we see plenty of near-misses that started with a tech stacking whatever blocks were handy on an unfamiliar vehicle. That is doubly true on electrified vehicles with sealed battery trays and specific pickup points, which is why we keep a separate EV lift safety checklist for shops that have started taking that work in.

Hydraulics, power unit, and controls

Pop the power unit cover. Fluid should be at the mark, clean, and not milky — milky means water has gotten in, which happens fast in an unheated Iowa shop through a winter of condensation cycles. Look at hose ends and fittings for the telltale wet ring of dust stuck to seepage. Check that the hose routing has not been rubbed raw against a column edge or crimped by a carriage. If the lift drifts down more than a hair when parked at height, you have an internal cylinder or valve issue and it is time for a call, not a shrug.

Test the controls with nothing on the lift. The up button should be a hold-to-run function that stops when released, and the descent should stop the moment you let go. Any lift that keeps moving after the operator lets go comes out of service immediately. Confirm the emergency stop or main disconnect works and that everyone in the bay knows where it is. Also glance at the electrical: cords should not be spliced, boxes should be closed, and nothing should be zip-tied where a strain relief belongs. Scissor, mid-rise, and mobile column differences

Not every lift checks out the same way. Scissor and mid-rise lifts hide most of their moving parts inside the scissor stack, so the daily pass focuses on pivot pins, bushing slop, the mechanical lock ladder, torsion bar alignment, and the condition of the runway or pad surfaces. Get low with a light and look for elongated pin holes and cracked weldments at the pivot points. Portable mid-rise units add another item: verify the frame is sitting flat on level concrete and the casters are fully retracted before a vehicle goes on. Mobile column sets need a different discipline entirely. Confirm all columns are on solid, level floor, batteries are charged, the communication cables or wireless sync are solid, and the forks are set to the same height and properly engaged on the correct lift points. A set of columns that loses sync mid-lift on a bus or fire truck is an event nobody forgets. Inground lifts, meanwhile, live in a pit or a cassette, so your daily items skew toward looking for oil in the containment, checking the superstructure locks, and confirming the plunger seals are not weeping into the ground. Different machine, same philosophy: look before you load.

Writing it down, training on it, and knowing when to call

A checklist nobody signs is a suggestion. We tell shops to print a simple one-page grid — dates across the top, items down the side, initials in the boxes — and hang it on the column or the tool board. It takes seconds, it creates a record for your insurer, and it makes the pattern visible. Three months of initials in one column and blanks in another tells the manager exactly which bay is getting looked at. Train every new hire on the routine in their first week, including the vocabulary — carriage, lock dog, equalization cable, slack-cable safety — so they can describe what is wrong instead of saying “it sounds weird.” And be clear about the shutdown items: broken cable strands, cracked concrete at an anchor, a lock that will not engage, a control that does not stop, visible cylinder leakage, or any structural crack.
