An overland builder along the Iowa-Illinois corridor near Davenport called us last fall stuck on the classic 2-post lift decision: overhead versus baseplate configuration for a shop with a nine-and-a-half foot ceiling. He was ready to compromise on either lift geometry or ceiling height until we asked whether he had considered skipping the choice entirely. Why the Overhead-Versus-Baseplate Question Was Wrong

Every 2-post lift shopper eventually hits the overhead-versus-baseplate decision. Overhead lifts have a crossbeam connecting the two posts across the top of the working envelope, which houses the equalizer cable and provides structural rigidity. Baseplate lifts move the crossbar to the floor at the base of the posts, which frees overhead clearance but eats floor space and forces the tech to step over the plate every time. Neither configuration is bad, but each has a real tradeoff, and shops with limited ceiling height often end up unhappy with whichever choice they make.

The overland builder was in exactly that spot. His nine-and-a-half foot ceiling would not clear a stock full-size truck on an overhead 2-post at full extension. A baseplate 2-post would clear the ceiling but stick a plate right where he needed to move engine hoists and jack stands around a lifted truck. The real answer for a shop his size was to skip the 2-post platform entirely. Mobile auto lifts have no crossbar of any kind, top or bottom. The columns are four independent posts with nothing structural between them, which means the overhead-versus-baseplate decision does not apply.

The Site Survey That Confirmed the Column-Set Fit

We ran the site survey in early October. His shop was a 36-by-48 pole building with five-inch concrete poured in 2018, single-phase 220V at a subpanel with three open circuits, and a nine-and-a-half foot ceiling with steel trusses. The slab was flat within a quarter inch across the working area. No floor drains through the intended bay. Ceiling height at the truss chord was a hair over nine feet, but the working envelope for a CLMM-5000 lifting a stock Tacoma or Jeep to shoulder height stayed well under that. His concern about ceiling had been about full-extension height on a full-size truck; at working height, no ceiling issue at all.

What the column set did require was clear side-and-back space for the tow handles to swing when repositioning. The builder had been storing steel stock along the north wall, which we asked him to move to a shelf before install day. Total working footprint for a four-column set around a full-size truck runs about eighteen by thirty feet with tow-handle clearance. His bay had exactly that space if the steel stock moved. Mobile auto lifts have geometric requirements different from a fixed 2-post, but for this corridor shop the geometry worked cleanly once the storage layout got adjusted.

The Configuration We Quoted and Why

Configuration for the quote was one four-column CLMM-5000 set at 5,000 lb per column, 20,000 lb total, single-phase 220V, standard tow handles, and no wireless controls. Total capacity covers every overland build he expected to see, including fully loaded 80-Series Land Cruisers and long-bed F-250s in stock configuration. Wireless controls would have added roughly ten percent to the total and were not necessary for a one-tech home-shop workflow. He had no plans to expand to a second set within the near term, so we quoted a single set with room to add a second later if his workload grew.

Alternative configurations we briefly discussed included a CLHM-125XF set at 50,000 lb total, which would have handled any hypothetical heavier work but required a three-phase service upgrade and cost roughly twice as much delivered. That upgrade did not fit his budget or his actual use case. Mobile auto lifts scale in column count more usefully than in per-column capacity for a shop that mostly does mid-weight work, and the CLMM-5000 was clearly the right platform for his shop. We quoted the set the following week and he placed the order in early November for a January install.

Install Day and the First Truck on the Columns

Install day fell on a Wednesday in mid-January. Two of our techs arrived at 8 AM with the columns on a trailer, uncrated them in the shop’s driveway, and rolled them into the bay one at a time using the integrated tow handles. Function-check per column took roughly twenty minutes: hydraulic bleed, motor test, sync-cable check against the primary column, and lock-mechanism test at multiple heights. Total install time was just under four hours. By early afternoon the set was ready for its first working lift.

The builder’s personal truck was a 4Runner in the middle of a rear-locker install. We had him drive it onto the working area, positioned the four columns at each tire, dropped the pole pads, and ran the set through a full lift-and-drop cycle to about five feet. Sync stayed within a fraction of an inch across the stroke. Lock engagement worked at every increment. The builder ran a follow-up cycle himself with our tech watching, then repositioned all four columns to a corner solo using only the tow handles. Six Months In: What the Builder Actually Reports

We checked in with the builder in July for a six-month update. He had lifted roughly forty vehicles on the column set across a mix of his own overland builds and paid work for two customer trucks. No warranty issues, no oil weeps, no sync faults, no lock complaints. The columns had been moved between working positions and to the storage corner roughly eighty times, which is well within the design cycle for the mobility system. Tow handles were unremarkable to operate solo, which is the highest praise a mobile column set can earn from an owner.

The unexpected benefit he mentioned was that the ceiling constraint stopped mattering. He had been mentally committed to working under a compromised lift geometry for years and had not realized how much that limited his willingness to take in outside work. With mobile auto lifts and no ceiling issue at working heights, he expanded his paid overland-build slots by roughly two per month starting in the spring. That workflow change is the real economic value the column set delivered, and it is the kind of outcome we only see when a shop is honest about which lift platform actually fits their building.

What Other Corridor Builders Should Take From This Case

The takeaway for other Iowa-Illinois corridor builders reading this case study is not that mobile column sets are universally the right answer. They are not. Shops with high ceilings and mostly passenger work will still be happy with a fixed 2-post, and shops that never move a lift once installed do not benefit from the mobility premium. The takeaway is that the overhead-versus-baseplate decision on 2-post lifts is a real constraint that sometimes points to a different platform entirely rather than a compromised 2-post choice. When ceiling height is tight and vehicle mix is variable, mobile auto lifts belong on the shortlist.

The other honest note is that the corridor’s specific mix of small-shop builders, overland fabricators, and specialty restoration operations tends to reward mobile platforms more than urban commercial shops do. Rural pole buildings with lower ceilings and mixed workflows are exactly where the column set thrives. Urban commercial bays with tall ceilings and specialized workflows often do better with fixed lifts. Knowing which category the shop falls into is the first honest question. If it lands in the corridor-shop category, the column set deserves a serious look.
