A city public works shop might need to lift a pickup truck one hour and a dump truck the next, while the county sheriff’s garage is servicing patrol SUVs with push bumpers and light bars that change how a vehicle sits on the pads. We’ve walked into more than one Iowa municipal shop where the lift on the floor was picked by whoever had budget left at the end of the fiscal year, not by someone who actually thought through the fleet mix. Why Municipal Fleet Lift Selection Starts With the Vehicle Roster

Before we quote any equipment, we ask for the actual vehicle list — every pickup, van, dump truck, plow rig, and squad car the shop touches in a given month. Municipal fleet lift selection done right is built from that roster, not from a catalog page. A shop that services half-ton trucks and sedans has very different needs than one that also lifts single-axle dump trucks or a street sweeper. Guessing at capacity is how shops end up with a lift that’s technically rated high enough on paper but awkward or unsafe in practice because the wheelbase or frame contact points don’t line up.

We’ve seen public works departments try to stretch a light-duty 2 post lift across a fleet that includes one-ton service trucks with plow mounts, and it never ends well — either the arms won’t reach the rated pick-up points or the shop crew starts improvising with blocks, which is exactly the kind of shortcut that leads to a dropped vehicle. Municipal fleet lift selection has to account for the heaviest, longest, and widest vehicle in the fleet, not the average one. Two Post vs Four Post for a Mixed Municipal Fleet

Most Iowa municipal shops we work with end up with a combination of both lift types rather than one or the other. A heavy-duty 2 post lift is efficient for routine service and inspection work on trucks and squad cars because it gives full underside access for brakes, exhaust, and suspension. A 4-post lift earns its space for alignment work, longer-term storage of seasonal equipment like mowers or plow trucks, and for shops that need a drive-on platform for vehicles with underbody equipment that makes arm placement tricky.

We typically recommend at least one 4-post in any shop that handles plow trucks, because the drive-on deck avoids the guesswork of finding safe lift points under a truck loaded with a spreader or plow frame. The right mix depends on bay count and how much simultaneous service capacity the shop actually needs during a Monday morning rush after a weekend storm.

A lift rated for a given capacity should never be the daily ceiling for a municipal shop. We push our municipal customers toward higher-capacity lifts than the bare minimum because fleet vehicles get equipped over their service life — push bumpers, ladder racks, plow frames, salt spreaders — and all of that adds weight that wasn’t on the truck when it left the factory. We also factor in how often a lift will be run at or near capacity. A lift that spends all day lifting heavy trucks needs a duty cycle and structural margin that a lighter-use shop doesn’t need to think about. This is where cutting corners on the front end costs a city more later — in downtime, in premature part wear, and in the liability of running equipment closer to its limits than it should be. A little extra rated capacity on install day is cheap insurance against a fleet that only gets heavier over time.

Bay Layout and Throughput for Public Works and Fire Shops

Municipal shops rarely get to redesign their building around new lifts — we’re almost always working within an existing bay footprint that was built decades ago for a smaller fleet. Municipal fleet lift selection means measuring ceiling height, column spacing, and door clearance before anything gets ordered, especially for fire department apparatus bays where overhead clearance is already tight with ladders and light bars. We’ve had to walk back an order more than once because a customer wanted a specific lift that simply wouldn’t clear the building.

Throughput matters too. A one-truck-at-a-time shop with three technicians and only one lift creates a bottleneck that shows up as overtime and delayed vehicles.
