A shop planned for a two-post lift today but built with the ceiling height and floor thickness for a heavier four-post lift tomorrow will save you a full remodel later. Floor Thickness and Anchoring Come First
Every in-ground and above-ground lift has a minimum concrete thickness and cure-time requirement, and this is one part of planning your garage shop that cannot be fixed after the fact. A four-inch slab that’s fine for parking a truck is not fine for anchoring a two-post lift — you need the thickness and rebar spec the manufacturer requires, poured correctly the first time. We’ve had to turn down installs because the existing slab simply wasn’t rated for the lift the customer already bought.
If you’re pouring new, get your lift model picked before you talk to your concrete contractor, not after. Give them the anchor bolt pattern and thickness spec directly from the lift manufacturer. This is a five-minute conversation during planning that prevents a jackhammer conversation six months later. It’s also worth planning a slightly larger poured pad than you think you need — most shop owners tell us they wish they’d gone bigger the day the truck can’t quite clear the door.
Power and Electrical Load
Lifts, compressors, welders, and lighting all draw power, and a garage shop wired like a house garage will trip breakers constantly once real equipment goes in. Part of planning your garage shop right is sizing your electrical service for where you’re headed, not just where you’re starting. A single hydraulic lift might only need a dedicated 220V circuit, but add an air compressor, tire machine, and shop lighting, and you’re looking at a subpanel, not an extension cord. Plan your outlets and disconnects at the design stage so you’re not drilling through finished walls later. If you know you’ll eventually add a second lift or a paint booth, run the conduit now even if you don’t pull wire through it yet. Iowa winters make outdoor trenching miserable, so getting your electrical rough-in done before the walls close up is worth the extra planning time up front.
Door Height and Vehicle Clearance
We get calls every year from shop owners who built beautiful garages with 8-foot doors, then bought a lift that raises a truck high enough it won’t clear the opening. When planning your garage shop, work backward from your tallest vehicle plus the lift’s maximum rise, and make sure the door height and the drive-through clearance both accommodate it. Don’t forget side clearance either. Two-post lifts need room for the arms to swing and doors to open fully on both sides of the vehicle. We measure this out during every consultation because a lift that fits fine on paper can be a tight squeeze in a real bay once you account for tool chests, workbenches, and walking room.
Bay Count and Workflow
How many bays you need depends on whether this is a personal garage, a side hustle, or a full commercial shop. A shop where every car has to be shuffled to reach the back bay wastes time every single day for as long as you own the building.
Leave room around each lift for a tool cart, a jack, and a technician to move freely on all sides. If you’re running more than one bay, plan a center aisle wide enough for a vehicle to pass a parked one without inching by. This is where a lot of shop owners cut corners early and regret it once the shop is actually busy.
Storage, Lighting, and Overhead Space
A well-planned shop isn’t just about the lift footprint — it’s about everywhere else the eye doesn’t go first. Overhead storage racks, parts shelving, and tire racks all need planned space that doesn’t conflict with lift arm swing or vehicle clearance. Lighting matters more than most people budget for; LED high-bays over each lift bay make inspection work dramatically easier than a couple of shop lights strung across the ceiling.
