A collector in Cedar Falls who restores 1960s and 1970s muscle cars called us early last year about adding a portable auto scissor lift to his metal-work bay. He wanted underbody access for cutting, welding, patch panel work, and floor pan replacement without giving up floor space to permanent columns. A portable auto scissor lift made sense for his workflow, but his concrete slab was the piece we had to figure out first. Here is how his first year of ownership went, from slab evaluation through the first real service visit.

The slab situation on day one

His shop was a converted 1970s pole barn with a slab poured in two stages – the original front half in 1978 and a back-half extension in 1996. That is exactly the kind of history that turns a portable auto scissor lift install into a puzzle. We measured slab thickness with a small test drill at three points: original half, extension, and the seam between them. Original came in at four inches with visible aggregate settling. Extension was closer to five inches with rebar. Seam was the concern – a cold joint between two pours of different ages tends to move. We planned the parked position on the extension slab and confirmed the deployed footprint stayed off the seam. That decision defined the entire bay layout, but it kept the lift on solid concrete and off a joint that could crack under repeated wheel loads. Rebar and the load-spread calculation

A portable auto scissor lift concentrates load through its base at the four corners of the deployed footprint. On a well-poured slab with rebar, that load spreads through the concrete efficiently and the slab handles it without issue. On an old slab with no rebar or degraded rebar, that same load can cause localized cracking or slow spalling. His extension slab had rebar visible in the test-drill cores. His original slab had no rebar visible in the front-half cores. We used the extension for the lift and made a note that the original front half was fine for parking vehicles but not for the lift’s deployed position. That is a level of detail most homeowners do not think about, and it is exactly the sort of thing that determines whether year five looks like year one or looks like a slab repair job. We had that conversation before we ever wrote up his quote.

First raise on a project car

He wanted the first raise to be on his current project – a 1968 Camaro shell mid-restoration, no engine, no interior, low weight. Perfect first raise. A portable auto scissor lift picks a stripped shell with almost no load complaint. We ran it to the second lock, verified pad placement at the factory jacking points, and walked him through the underbody. Rocker panels visible, floor pan reachable, transmission tunnel accessible without crawling. He got fifteen minutes of clear underbody time before we lowered it and did it again. The first raise on a project car matters because it sets the workflow. He learned that pad placement on a stripped shell needs an extra check – the jacking points can be corroded, and if the pads slip a fraction of an inch during the raise, the shell wobbles. We put small rubber pucks on each pad for that first raise and every one after. The wobble went away.

Winter one: what a Cedar Falls pole barn does to a lift

Cedar Falls winters mean condensation. His pole barn had a slab that stayed cold and air that got humid whenever he ran a kerosene heater. Condensation on hydraulic pump housing is not a friend. He noticed a light rust bloom on the pump base by January, which is faster than we would expect in a controlled garage but exactly what happens in a barn with dew-point swings. We coached him through wiping the pump base weekly with a light oiled rag through the coldest months. That stopped the bloom. We also had him leave the lift’s parked position slightly elevated on rubber pads instead of directly on the concrete – the pads broke the thermal bridge between cold slab and lift base, which cut the condensation. Small fix, real result. By March the pump base was clean and no further rust appeared through the rest of the year. Our restoration shop guide covers similar issues.

Metal work with the vehicle raised

Cutting and welding on a raised vehicle requires two things a portable auto scissor lift handles well: level lift and stable footing. Level matters because gravity pulls molten weld pool the direction the vehicle tilts. Stable footing matters because you are leaning into the work with a MIG gun or a cutoff wheel. His portable auto scissor lift gave him both. He welded new floor pans on the Camaro from underneath, standing upright, with the pan clamped in position and the weld running at a comfortable angle. That job would have been miserable on jack stands. On the scissor, it was a good afternoon’s work. He did add ground clamps directly to the vehicle chassis, not the lift, so no welding current ran through the lift’s frame or hydraulic components. Manufacturers ask for that separation and it matters – running welding current through a lift can damage electronics and connections you cannot easily see.

The wear parts he replaced at month eight

Eight months in, the pads on the platform were showing wear from repeated slide-under-vehicle placement. Not a warranty issue – pads are consumable. He ordered a fresh set from us and had them installed in twenty minutes. The pivot pins he greased at month six and again at month twelve on the schedule we gave him. The casters had gathered some grinding-wheel grit that we cleaned out with a wire brush and a shot of dry lube. Nothing on the scissor mechanism itself needed attention. The hydraulic reservoir still read at the fill line, no top-off. That is the wear-parts rhythm on a portable in a metal-work shop: pads first, casters second, everything else on manufacturer schedule. The Camaro was drivable by month ten and rolling under its own power by month twelve. The lift moved to the next project – a 1972 Chevelle he had been eyeing for two years.

Twelve-month service and the year-two plan

Twelve-month service on a portable auto scissor lift is short. Hydraulic fluid level check, pivot pin grease, safety lock cycle test, hose fitting inspection, pad replacement if needed. Total time on his lift was under an hour. We wrote out the year-two plan for him: same maintenance rhythm, add a hydraulic fluid drain-and-fill at month thirty-six, and inspect the frame welds annually with a flashlight. Frame welds on a portable are rated for the lifetime of the lift, but a visual check every twelve months catches anything unusual before it becomes a problem. He asked if he should be worried about the lift outlasting the barn. We said probably yes – the barn is older than he is and the lift is warranted longer than the barn will hold up without a new roof. That is the honest math on portables from real manufacturers. They outlast a lot of the buildings they end up in.
