What a rotary air cylinder actually does on your lift
On a Rotary two-post or four-post, the rotary air cylinder is the little pneumatic actuator that pulls the safety-lock latches out of the way when you tell the lift to descend. When you press the release, shop air pushes the cylinder rod, the rod tugs the latch cable, the latches disengage, and the lift can lower. When the cylinder leaks or the seal fails, the latches never fully retract, and the lift refuses to drop.
The cylinder is a small, unglamorous part — usually a 1 to 1.5 inch bore, a few inches of stroke — but its failure completely disables the lift. Most shops in central Iowa cannot picture the part, but every experienced tech knows the symptom: press release, hear a hiss instead of a click, watch the lift refuse to move. That hiss is your rotary air cylinder telling you it is done.
Why the air cylinder is the second-most-called-about part
After hydraulic cylinders and cables, the rotary air cylinder is one of the highest-volume single parts we ship. It fails on a predictable curve. On a lift cycled ten times a day, we typically see cylinder failures in the seven-to-twelve-year range, sometimes sooner if the shop air is dirty or wet. Iowa humidity, shop compressor age, and the small size of the seals inside the cylinder all conspire to shorten its life.
The fix is almost always fast. If you catch it early — hissing at the fitting but the cylinder still functions — a new hose or O-ring solves it. If the cylinder itself is passing air past the piston, you need a rebuild kit or a new cylinder. We stock both. Signs your rotary air cylinder is leaking
Four clear symptoms tell you the air cylinder is failing. First, audible hiss when you press the release — air is escaping somewhere it should not. Second, sluggish lock release: the cylinder is moving, but not with enough force to fully retract the latches. Third, uneven lock release — one column drops before the other. Fourth, the release works cold but fails when the shop warms up.
That last one catches shops off guard. Rubber seals inside the cylinder shrink slightly when the shop is 55 degrees in the morning and expand when it hits 75 in the afternoon, and a marginal seal will pass air only when it is warm. If your lift releases fine at 7 a.m. but sticks at 2 p.m., replace the cylinder before the next cold morning; a fully-failed cylinder in January is a much bigger problem.
Common failure modes on air release cylinders
The rotary air cylinder fails in three ways. First, seal failure — the internal piston seal wears, and air passes from the pressure side to the exhaust side without moving the rod. Second, rod damage — a bent or corroded rod scores the seal every cycle and destroys it. Third, fitting or hose failure — the cylinder itself is fine, but the air line or the fitting is leaking.
Diagnose in that order. Pull the air line off and blow through it to confirm the line is clean. Check the fitting at the cylinder for hiss under pressure. If both are tight and the cylinder still will not hold pressure, the internal seals are gone. At that point, a rebuild kit or a replacement cylinder is the answer. Line, fittings, and the little parts that come with it
When you order a rotary air cylinder, do not forget the small parts around it. The air line, the push-to-connect fitting at the cylinder, the shuttle valve on the lock release circuit, and the release cable that ties the cylinder rod to the latches — all of those can be the actual failure point even when the cylinder gets blamed. It is worth having them on hand.

Rebuilding versus replacing the cylinder
On a rotary air cylinder, the rebuild-vs-replace decision usually tips toward replacement. The cylinders are inexpensive enough that the labor to disassemble, clean, reseal, and reassemble often costs more than a new unit. Exceptions: if the cylinder is a specialty size for an older lift Rotary no longer stocks, rebuilding with a fresh seal set is your only option.
