A scissor lift for automotive suspension and shock replacement work at an Urbandale dealership was the exact spec question we got from a service manager building out a dedicated suspension bay last spring. He wasn’t looking for a general-purpose lift; he was looking for a scissor lift for automotive suspension work that his techs could use to knock out struts, shocks, control arms, and coil-over swaps at production pace on a mix of domestic light trucks and SUVs. The three lifts we compared for that build — Rotary MR6, Challenger DX77, and BendPak MDS-6EXT — each had a different answer for what a suspension bay actually needs. Here’s the model-by-model comparison we walked through, and why he picked what he picked.

What a suspension bay actually needs from a lift

A scissor lift for automotive suspension work has three requirements the marketing pages don’t emphasize enough. First, it needs deck clearance under the vehicle at working height — techs are pulling struts down from the top of a strut tower and pushing them up during install, and they need standing headroom to do that without ducking. Second, it needs clean wheel access from all four sides, because suspension work involves the whole corner of the car: wheel off, brake line moved, sway bar link disconnected, strut bolts backed off, then the whole assembly comes out. Third, it needs to hold the vehicle rock-steady at working height for the twenty to forty minutes a strut swap takes.

Not every scissor delivers all three well. Full-rise scissors deliver the standing headroom but consume ceiling clearance. Mid-rise scissors are shorter but give the tech less headroom at working height, which becomes a fatigue issue over eight strut swaps a day. The right choice for a suspension bay depends on the ceiling height and the vehicle mix. The Urbandale dealer had eleven-foot-six ceilings and worked on trucks and SUVs — full-size or bigger. That combination pointed us squarely at a full-rise scissor with a long deck.

Rotary MR6: the mid-rise contender

The Rotary MR6 is a mid-rise scissor with 6,000-lb capacity and about 48 inches of rise. It’s the lift we recommend for any dealership doing mostly passenger-car service work, and it’s the first lift we quoted for the Urbandale build. Its strengths are: fast cycle time, low ceiling requirement (about nine feet clear works), and drive-over geometry that handles low sports cars without adapters. Its weaknesses for a suspension bay are: 48 inches of rise gives the tech maybe 40 inches of standing clearance under a full-size truck, which is not enough headroom for a comfortable eight-hour day of strut work.

Where the MR6 shines is a shop working on Camrys, Malibus, F-150s at curb height. For a dealership doing mixed brand suspension work on cars in the 3,500 to 5,500-lb weight range, the MR6 delivers capacity margin and speed. For a dealership specifically doing full-size truck and SUV suspension work — which is what Urbandale needed — the MR6’s rise limitation is the deciding factor against it. If the tech has to hunch, the shop loses ten to fifteen minutes per job to fatigue-related pace decline, and on eight jobs a day that’s an hour of lost production. The MR6 came off the shortlist after that math.

Challenger DX77: the full-rise heavy-duty pick

The Challenger DX77 is a full-rise scissor lift for automotive work with 14,000-lb capacity and about 72 inches of rise. It’s the lift the Urbandale dealer picked, and here’s why. First, the rise puts a Chevy Tahoe’s frame at about ten feet of vehicle-plus-lift stack, which fits under his eleven-foot-six ceiling with 18 inches of clearance to the trusses. Second, the deck length at 82 inches accommodates the wheelbase of the biggest trucks his service department sees, without the front tires overhanging the ramp edge. Third, the 14,000-lb capacity gives real margin — he’s lifting vehicles at 6,500 to 7,500 lb on the heavy end, so he’s using about half the rated capacity.

The tradeoffs on the DX77 are cost and ceiling requirement. It’s the most expensive of the three we compared, roughly twice the MR6 on the delivered-and-installed line, and it requires taller ceilings that eliminate about half of older dealership service buildings. For a new bay build with adequate ceiling, and for a suspension-focused workflow on heavy vehicles, it’s the right tool. We’ve now installed nine DX77s in Iowa dealerships over the last two years and the failure rate on those units in that window is zero. Rotary and Challenger both build scissors that last, but the DX77 has been notably drama-free in dealership service.

BendPak MDS-6EXT: the value alternative

The BendPak MDS-6EXT is a mid-rise scissor with 6,000-lb capacity and about 42 inches of rise, aimed squarely at shops that want a scissor lift for automotive service at a lower price point than the Rotary or Challenger equivalents. We include it in every comparison because it’s a legitimate value option, and for the right shop it’s the right answer. Its strengths are: aggressive pricing that comes in about twenty percent below the Rotary MR6 on the delivered line, decent build quality for the price, and a warranty that BendPak actually honors in the field.

Its weaknesses in a dealership suspension bay are the same as the MR6, plus a couple more. The 42-inch rise is even shorter, so tech headroom under a full-size vehicle is minimal. The deck geometry is optimized for passenger cars, so full-size truck frames need drop-in adapters we spec separately. And the parts pipeline for BendPak in Iowa is thinner than Rotary or Challenger — we stock some BendPak wear parts in Ames but not the depth we stock for the other two brands. For a small independent shop on a tight budget, the BendPak MDS-6EXT is a solid pick. Rise height and reach for strut work

Rise height is the spec that separates scissors for suspension work. Strut removal on a full-size truck requires the tech to reach up to the strut tower nuts under the hood while the wheel is off — meaning the wheel-off condition needs to hold long enough to remove the strut, and the tech needs standing access from the front of the wheelwell down to the coil spring at the bottom. On a scissor lift for automotive suspension work at 72 inches of rise, the tech can stand at the wheel opening and reach up into the wheelwell without a step stool. On a lift at 48 inches of rise, he’s hunched over the fender lip and reaching down — a working position that adds fatigue and cuts jobs per day.

We built a spreadsheet for the Urbandale service manager showing time per strut swap at three different rise heights, based on our own observation of dealership shops we work with. At 72 inches, average strut swap is 22 minutes. At 60 inches, average swap is 26 minutes. At 48 inches, average swap is 31 minutes. Over 200 strut swaps a month, the difference between a 72-inch rise and a 48-inch rise is about thirty hours of tech labor. That’s real money — the ROI on the taller full-rise scissor pays back in about two years just on labor efficiency. The full-rise is not a luxury for a production suspension bay; it’s a labor-saving investment.

Ramp clearance for lowered vehicles

Even a suspension bay working mostly on trucks occasionally sees a lowered vehicle — a customer’s WRX with an aftermarket coilover, a leased Lexus with a factory sport suspension, an owner’s private car brought in for a lift kit reversal before turn-in. Ramp clearance on the scissor deck matters for these vehicles. Standard drive-over ramps at 15 degrees will scrape the front air dam or splitter of anything sitting under six inches of clearance at the front bumper.

The DX77 with the shallow-angle ramp option handles this better. The 10-degree ramps clear about half an inch more ground clearance than 15-degree ramps at the transition point. For a mixed-vehicle shop, we spec the shallow ramps every time; the small cost premium up front avoids a lot of customer conversations later. The Urbandale build got shallow ramps on the DX77 for this reason — the service manager saw enough lowered cars come through his shop that he didn’t want to be the guy who scraped a customer’s WRX rocker on a lift ramp. That’s the kind of foresight that keeps dealership CSI scores high, and it’s the kind of decision that costs almost nothing to make on the front end of a lift purchase.

Hydraulic power unit sizing and field-adjustable locks

The power unit on a scissor lift for automotive suspension work in a production environment needs to handle continuous duty at heavy load without the motor complaining. The DX77 ships with a 3.5-horsepower single-phase 220V motor that we’ve seen run continuous cycle for full shifts without heat issues. Smaller motors on cheaper lifts start cutting in and out on thermal protection after a few hours of aggressive cycling. That’s an efficiency killer in a production bay and a red flag on any brand not on our short list.

Field-adjustable safety locks are the other detail that pays back in a suspension bay. The DX77’s mechanical locks engage every 3 inches of travel from the lowest working height to full rise. For strut work, the tech wants to set the vehicle at a specific height that lets him work at the wheelwell without hunching or reaching, and he wants the mechanical lock to hold there. With a lock every 3 inches, he can find a working height within an inch or two of ideal every time. Lifts with locks every 6 inches — which is what some competitor brands ship — force him to work at whatever height the nearest lock happens to be, which is either too high or too low half the time.
