What makes a seal fail early is not the number of cycles but the condition of the rod chrome and the cleanliness of the fluid. A pitted rod chews the seal every stroke. Getting them out requires the lift raised and safely blocked on stands independently of the cylinders, then hoses removed, then cylinder pins driven out. Once the cylinder is on a bench, disassembly needs a proper cylinder-nut wrench (they’re tight — hundreds of foot-pounds), the piston seals replaced, the rod seals replaced, the wiper replaced, and everything reassembled with the right torque and no burrs on the honing surface. Then reinstalled. That is a day per cylinder for a shop that knows the model, longer for one that doesn’t. Rebuilding both sides is two days. Rebuilding both sides and getting one of them wrong is a fluid leak all over your bay the next morning. We don’t discourage capable shops from doing it themselves — we just tell them it isn’t an afternoon.

Myth three says the OEM seal kit is always the right buy. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The scam we see is a low-tier off-brand kit that’s marked "fits most" — some of those seals don’t fit tight enough and start weeping again in months. What a real rebuild actually costs

Every rotation puts a full vehicle load on the pads for the twenty to thirty minutes it takes to swap and torque.
