When a collector in eastern Nebraska called us about a scissor lift for automotive service, he had a specific problem: eleven vehicles, a heated shop, and a growing list of differential and transmission fluid changes he had been putting off because he hated crawling around on jack stands. He was not running a business. He was maintaining a collection — two air-cooled Porsches, a couple of muscle cars, a Suburban that pulled the enclosed trailer, and a rotating cast of projects. He wanted something that came up out of the floor when he needed it and disappeared when he did not, because half his floor space was already committed to cars parked bumper to bumper. The Conversation Before the Purchase

His opening email said he wanted to lift a passenger vehicle around seven thousand pounds or less, do maintenance, and possibly store a car up in the air with another parked underneath. Those are two different jobs, and it is worth separating them early. Storage stacking is a four-post job. A four-post holds a vehicle on its wheels indefinitely, sits on mechanical locks, and does not care if it stays loaded for eight months. A platform-style unit can hold a vehicle up, but it is not designed as a long-term parking structure and the footprint underneath is compromised by the scissor mechanism itself.

Once we untangled that, the decision got clearer. He decided the storage stacking mattered less than he thought — he could shuffle cars in and out of the shop as needed — and what he actually wanted every week was easy underbody access for fluid work. That pointed straight at a full-rise platform. We also talked capacity honestly. Seven thousand pounds sounds like a comfortable margin for a Suburban until you factor in a full tank, a toolbox in the back, and the fact that capacity ratings assume even distribution. We sized up rather than down, which cost a bit more and gave him headroom he has since used more than once.

Install Day in an Already-Full Shop

Installing in a shop with eleven vehicles in it is a logistics exercise. We asked him to clear one bay completely and shuffle everything else to the far wall, which meant a Saturday of moving cars before we ever showed up. Worth it. Trying to work around a Porsche parked six feet from the drill is how expensive mistakes happen.

His slab was five inches of decent concrete, which we confirmed by coring, and level enough that we only needed thin shims at two mounting points. Shimming matters more on scissor platforms than people realize. The mechanism relies on both sides tracking evenly through travel, and a platform sitting on a slab with a quarter-inch dip across the footprint will bind and wear pivots unevenly. We shimmed, anchored to spec with a torque wrench rather than by feel, ran the unit through a dozen unloaded cycles, then did a loaded test with the Suburban. Total time on site was about half a day. We spent another forty-five minutes walking him through the lock increments — this model clicks about every two inches — so he understood he was not limited to fully down or fully up. He set it at a comfortable working height for the Porsches and marked the spot with a paint pen.

Differential Fluid Service: What Changed

The first real job was the deferred maintenance list. Differential fluid on a rear-drive car is a straightforward job with good access and a genuinely miserable job on jack stands, because you are working overhead in a confined space trying to get a fill pump into a hole you can barely see. On a platform at forty-eight inches you can sit on a stool, see the fill plug clearly, and get the pump seated without contorting.

He knocked out four diffs in a weekend, plus two transfer cases and a manual transmission. The thing he mentioned afterward was not the height — it was the stability. Working under a car on stands, you subconsciously avoid putting force on anything, which makes a stuck fill plug into a two-hour argument. On a properly anchored platform you can lean on a breaker bar without thinking about it. That confidence is most of the productivity gain. He also learned the practical limit: with a wheel-contact platform, the pads are under the pinch welds or frame rails, and on a couple of his cars the exhaust routing sat close enough to the platform edge that he had to reposition slightly. We talked him through positioning on the phone, and after two or three cars he had a routine for each vehicle. Any scissor lift for automotive fluid work involves that learning curve.

Cable Inspection: Where It Lives and What to Look For

Most people associate lift cables with four-posts, and on a four-post the cables carry the load. On many scissor designs the lifting is purely hydraulic, but there are still cables or chains involved in the leveling and lock-release systems on plenty of models, and equalizer cables on some. The first thing we do at any service visit is find out what the specific unit uses, because owners often do not know.

On his model, there are leveling cables running through the mechanism, and they need eyes on them at least twice a year. What we look for: broken strands, which show up as tiny wire whiskers you can feel by dragging a rag along the cable — if the rag snags, look closer. Corrosion, especially where a cable passes over a sheave and sits in one spot for months. Flat spots or kinks from something getting pinched during a cycle. And slack that has developed unevenly between sides, which shows up as one end of the platform hesitating on the way down. Any broken strands mean replacement, not adjustment. Replacement Intervals in a Low-Cycle Collector Shop

Here is where a collector’s situation differs sharply from a commercial shop, and where manufacturer intervals need interpretation. A production shop might cycle a unit twenty times a day. This customer cycles his maybe three times a week. Cable wear is largely a function of cycles, so on cycle count alone his cables would last decades.

But cables also fail from age and environment, not just use. Rubber and steel degrade regardless. A cable that sits in one position for six months develops a set, and moisture wicks into the strands where it sits against a sheave. In an unheated or intermittently heated building — and his shop only gets heat when he is working in it — condensation cycles are the real enemy. So our guidance for low-cycle owners is inspection-driven rather than interval-driven: look twice a year, replace on condition, and plan on replacement somewhere in the eight-to-twelve-year range even if nothing looks obviously wrong. That is a range, not a rule. A cable in a dehumidified, climate-controlled shop can go longer. One in a damp building near the river should be looked at harder. We also tell people to grease pivot pins every couple of months regardless of use, because grease that sits and dries out is not protecting anything. The Twelve-Month Check and What We Found

We went back a year after install. Cables looked clean, no broken strands, tension even side to side. Cylinder rods were dry, which is what you want, though one hose fitting had the faintest weep — snug and monitor, not replace. Hydraulic fluid was down slightly, which is normal, and we topped it off. Lock engagement was crisp on both sides.

The one real finding was pivot pin wear on the ground-side pivots, which is where the highest loads concentrate. Slight, well within tolerance, but it told us he had not been greasing on the schedule we recommended. That is the single most common thing we find in owner-maintained shops. Not abuse, not overloading — just a grease gun that stayed on the shelf. We regreased, showed him the wear pattern so he could see what neglect actually looks like, and he has been consistent since.
