A scissor lift for automotive alignment work at an overlander’s home shop is a spec we didn’t see a lot of five years ago, and now it’s about a third of our residential scissor sales along the Iowa-Illinois corridor. The build we finished last fall for an off-road rig-builder outside Davenport is the reason. He’d been driving his lifted Ram to a chain alignment shop, watching them refuse to touch it because of the 35-inch tires and long-arm suspension, and finally decided he’d rather own a scissor lift for automotive alignment and do it himself. Why an overlander wanted an alignment scissor at home
The Iowa-Illinois corridor has plenty of alignment shops. What it does not have plenty of is alignment shops willing to align a Ram 2500 on 35-inch KM3s with a four-inch lift, a long-arm kit, and axle trusses welded to the housing. Chain shops send those trucks back for two reasons: their alignment racks don’t accommodate the wheelbase or track, and their techs don’t want the liability of miscalculating caster on a modified suspension. That’s a legitimate business decision by the chain shops. It’s also why an overlander who runs modified rigs eventually buys his own scissor lift for automotive alignment.
Our Iowa-Illinois customer had bought and sold three modified trucks in the last five years. Each one had spent time at three different alignment shops before he found one that would work on it. He did the math on time-off-work, drive time, waiting, and the price premium the specialist shops charged — and concluded that owning an alignment-capable scissor at home paid for itself in four years even at zero personal enjoyment premium. Add the enjoyment of doing the work himself, and the payback was two years. His words, not ours. That’s a purchase we can help someone with.
Choosing a Rotary XA14 with alignment options
Not every scissor lift for automotive alignment work is alignment-capable, and this is the one part of the buying process where cheaping out on brand is going to hurt you. The Rotary XA14 with the alignment package includes turnplate pockets machined into the deck at the correct fore-aft positions for common wheelbases from a Miata to a 3500 dually, factory slip plates behind the turnplates, and deck flatness tolerance held to alignment spec at full rated capacity. Without the alignment package, the same lift is a great scissor but not one you’d want to align a lifted truck on.
The Iowa-Illinois build got the XA14 with the alignment package plus the extended-length deck to accommodate the Ram’s 149-inch wheelbase. Extended deck is a $600 option that pays for itself the first time you try to align a long-wheelbase truck on a standard deck. The other option we added was the drop-in adapter kit for taller ground clearance — the Ram sits high on 35s, and the standard deck contact points are too low to catch the frame without adapters. Every one of these options was ordered up front rather than as add-ons later, because add-on freight would have cost more than the parts themselves. Freight route from Iowa to a rural Illinois driveway
Freight on the XA14 shipped from Rotary’s Wisconsin plant to a rural Illinois address about ten miles east of the Iowa border. Common carrier, three-day transit, liftgate confirmed. The route was straightforward: I-88 east, off at an exit we’d used before for a previous customer, ten miles of state highway to the property. The final quarter mile was gravel, but the driveway was concrete apron for the last hundred feet, which is where we planned to unload.
What we didn’t know until pickup day was that the truck coming out of Wisconsin was a 53-foot dry van with air-ride suspension and a liftgate rated for 3,300 lb. The XA14 palletized to just over 2,900 lb, so the liftgate had margin. We confirmed all of that on a phone call to the trucking company’s dispatch the morning of pickup — a call we make on every residential freight, because we’ve been burned twice by carriers switching equipment mid-shipment and showing up with a truck that couldn’t do the job. Two minutes on the phone with dispatch saves hours on the delivery end. This is the piece that first-time home-shop buyers don’t know to do, and it’s why we build the call into our own process regardless of who’s ordering.
Forklift day and pallet placement
Forklift for the delivery was a rental from an Illinois yard we’d used before for another install. Half-day rate, delivered to the property the evening before, picked up the following afternoon. Total forklift cost: about $350 including delivery both ways. That’s the standard we plan for on any residential install without an on-site forklift, and it’s a line item on every quote we give.
Delivery morning went clean. Truck arrived at 10:15, liftgate came down, pallet came off the gate onto the concrete apron by 10:35. Forklift moved the pallet from the apron into the pole building, set it on the layout marks we’d chalked the day before. Total from truck arrival to pallet-on-marks: 45 minutes. That’s about as fast as a residential delivery ever goes, and every minute of that speed came from planning done before the truck arrived. We had the layout marks already chalked. We had the forklift staged. We had the driver’s phone number for last-minute questions. We had confirmed his ETA the morning of delivery. No improvisation. Alignment prep — plates, laser targets, and calibration
Alignment prep on a home scissor lift for automotive alignment work is where a lot of owners short-cut and then wonder why their alignment readings don’t repeat. The right prep is: level the deck with a machinist’s level in both fore-aft and side-to-side axes at the working ride height, verify turnplate bearing motion is free with a hand push, verify slip plate float is free, and calibrate whatever alignment measurement system you’re using to the deck’s true flat plane.
Our customer bought a used Hunter Engineering alignment machine off a shop that upgraded. Hunter is the only alignment brand we recommend without qualification — it’s what every serious shop in Iowa runs, it’s what dealer techs get trained on, and it’s what has the parts and support pipeline that will outlive the machine itself. His used unit calibrated to the new scissor deck in about ninety minutes on install day. Once calibrated, the alignment machine takes readings that are as accurate as anything a commercial shop would produce, because the geometry of the setup is what matters, not the age of the equipment. A well-calibrated older Hunter unit on a well-leveled scissor deck is better than a brand-new machine on a poorly-leveled cheap lift, every time.
First job on the new lift: the 35-inch tire toe check
First job was the Ram he’d bought the whole rig for. Onto the deck, chocked, cycled to alignment height, engaged mechanical locks, turnplates and slip plates in position. First alignment reading: front toe was out about half a degree per side, caster was off spec by a full degree on the left front, camber was in-spec but at the outside edge of tolerance. All three readings tracked with what he’d been complaining about — the truck was pulling right at highway speed and eating the inside edge of the left front tire.
The fix was set-and-forget on his suspension: adjustable caster/camber ball joints and a factory tie rod for toe. Total working time from first reading to final verified alignment: about three hours, most of which was breaking loose components that hadn’t been touched since he installed the lift kit two years earlier. The verified final reading was within a few hundredths of a degree of factory spec across all measurements. That truck went from pulling right and eating tires to tracking straight and even-wearing on 35s, on his own scissor lift for automotive alignment work in his own shop. That’s the value proposition that keeps sending overlanders down this path.
Cost, timeline, and what we’d do differently
Total project cost including lift, alignment package, extended deck, drop-in adapters, freight, forklift rental, concrete verification, and install ran into the low five figures — comparable to five years of specialist alignment shop visits at the rates he’d been paying. Timeline from initial call to first completed alignment on his truck was seven weeks. Lift order to freight arrival was four weeks; install was one day; alignment machine calibration was one afternoon.
What we’d do differently on the next one: we’d have spec’d the wireless alignment head kit from Hunter rather than the wired kit he already owned. The wired kit works, but managing cables around the lift and the truck adds real time to every alignment. The wireless kit costs a few thousand more but pays for itself in a shop doing more than a couple of alignments a month. If we were quoting the same customer today, we’d have that conversation on the front end.
