A scissor lift installation checklist is the difference between a lift that goes in clean and passes inspection the first time, and one that gets flagged, re-anchored, or worse — pulled out of a slab that couldn’t handle it. Start With the Slab, Not the Lift
Every scissor lift installation checklist we run through starts underneath the lift, not on top of it. Before a crate even gets opened, we want to know the slab’s thickness, age, and rebar situation. Most manufacturers spec a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete at a set PSI, and that number changes depending on the lift’s capacity and whether it’s a surface-mount or flush-mount unit. Older Iowa shop floors, especially ones poured decades ago for lighter equipment, are the most common surprise on this list.
We also check for existing cracks, control joints, and previous anchor holes near the install footprint. A scissor lift puts concentrated point loads on the anchors, and any joint or crack within a few inches of a bolt pattern can compromise the whole install even if the anchor itself torques down fine. If the slab doesn’t check out, we recommend either relocating the lift a few feet or pouring a dedicated pad before moving forward — trying to force an install onto a bad slab is the single most expensive mistake we see, because it usually means redoing concrete work after the fact instead of before.
Confirm Clearance in Every Direction
Ceiling height gets all the attention, but a real scissor lift installation checklist covers clearance on all sides, not just up top. We measure the fully raised height of the platform plus the vehicle on top of it, then check that number against the lowest point in the ceiling — lights, ductwork, sprinkler heads, and door tracks all count. We’ve had to move planned install spots more than once because a shop measured to the ceiling deck but forgot about a sprinkler head hanging six inches lower.
Side clearance matters just as much for scissor and mid-rise lifts, since technicians need to walk around the platform and open doors on both sides of the vehicle without hitting a wall, a support column, or another lift. We also look at the approach — is there enough straight-line room to drive a vehicle onto the platform without a tight turn, and is the runway wide enough for the tire spacing on the biggest vehicle the shop plans to service? Getting this wrong doesn’t show up until the lift is already bolted down and someone can’t open a door.
Verify Power Before the Lift Arrives
Hydraulic scissor lifts need a dedicated circuit sized to the power unit’s motor, and getting that wrong is one of the most common delays we run into on installation day. We confirm voltage, amperage, and whether the shop’s existing panel has room for another dedicated breaker well before the lift shows up, not the morning of. Running the numbers late means either delaying the install or running the lift on an undersized circuit that trips breakers and shortens motor life.
We also plan where the power unit itself will sit relative to the lift, since hose runs have length limits and longer runs can affect lift speed and pump performance. For shops adding a second or third lift down the line, we typically recommend running conduit with some spare capacity now rather than opening up a finished floor again later. It’s a small added cost during construction and a real headache to retrofit afterward.
Check Hydraulic and Cable Components Before Assembly
Before we start bolting anything together, every hydraulic line, hose fitting, and cable on a mid-rise unit gets a visual inspection. Freight damage happens more than people expect, and a pinched hose or a nicked cable that gets buried inside the scissor mechanism during assembly is far more expensive to fix later than it is to catch now. We also verify that the hydraulic fluid supplied matches spec and that all fittings are torqued correctly before the first pressure test. Cable-synchronized scissor lifts especially need even cable tension across both sides before the platform ever goes to full height, since uneven tension shows up immediately as a platform that doesn’t level correctly.
Anchor to Spec, Then Torque-Check
Anchoring is the step people most often try to rush, and it’s the one most tied to safety. We use the anchor type and embedment depth the manufacturer specifies for the confirmed slab thickness — no substitutions, no shortcuts. Every bolt gets torqued to spec and logged, and we double check torque again after the platform has been cycled a few times, since initial cycling can seat anchors slightly differently than a static test.

Run a Full Cycle Test Before Signing Off
Once anchoring, hydraulics, and power are confirmed, we run the platform through a full cycle — empty first, then loaded — checking for level, smooth operation, and correct function of every safety lock and lowering-limit switch. We watch cable tension, listen for anything that sounds off in the pump, and confirm the platform locks solidly at every height position it’s designed to stop at.
