The signs your lift arms need replacing usually show up quietly at first — a little extra creak, a slight sag under load, a pad that never quite sits flat anymore. We’ve walked into shops all over Iowa where a tech mentioned “the arm’s been doing that for a while” like it was no big deal. It is a big deal. Lift arms carry the entire weight of the vehicle on two swing points, and when that steel starts to fatigue, bend, or crack, the failure doesn’t happen slowly — it happens all at once, usually with a car on the rack. Visible Cracks, Bends, or Weld Damage

This is the most obvious of all the signs your lift arms need replacing, and it’s the one we take the most seriously on every inspection. Any crack in the arm casting or a weld seam that’s splitting is an immediate out-of-service condition. We don’t care how small it looks — a hairline crack in a stressed casting only grows, and it grows fastest right when a heavy pickup or dually is sitting up on the rack. Bent arms are just as concerning. An arm that’s been tweaked from an overload, a forklift bump, or a vehicle rolling off a pad no longer distributes weight the way it was engineered to, even if it still swings and locks normally.

We’ve pulled arms out of service in shops across central Iowa that looked fine from three feet away but had stress cracks running through the pivot casting once we got a flashlight and a mirror on them. If you see rust bleeding out of a seam, that’s often a crack hiding under paint. Any of these findings means the arm comes off the lift that day, not next week. Don’t try to weld-repair a load-bearing lift arm in the field — reputable manufacturers like Rotary and Challenger don’t approve field welding on structural arm components, and neither do we.

Excessive Play or Slop in the Pivot Points

Every lift arm has some designed clearance at the pivot pins so it can swing freely, but there’s a big difference between normal clearance and worn-out slop. If you can grab the end of the arm and rock it side to side and feel noticeable movement at the base pivot, the bushings or pins have worn beyond spec. This is one of the more common signs your lift arms need replacing that gets ignored because the lift still “works.” It works right up until the play gets bad enough that the arm shifts under load and the vehicle settles unevenly on its pads.

Sometimes a worn pivot can be fixed with new bushings and pins rather than a full arm replacement, and we’ll always check that first since it’s the more affordable path. But once the pivot bore itself has worn oval or the casting around it shows wear grooves, no bushing kit fixes that — the arm has to come off. We see this most on higher-mileage two post lifts that have run for a decade or more with heavy daily traffic, especially in quick-lube and tire shops where the arms get swung dozens of times a day.

The Arm Won’t Lock or Slips Under Load

Restraint mechanisms on lift arms are there to keep the arm from swinging out from under the vehicle once it’s positioned and loaded. If the locking pawl or latch won’t engage cleanly, or if it engages but you can hear or feel it slip slightly when weight comes down, stop using that arm immediately. This is a safety-critical failure, not a maintenance nuisance. A slipping restraint can let an arm walk out from under a car mid-service, and there’s no scenario where that ends well for the vehicle, the tech underneath it, or your shop’s insurance claim history.

Sometimes the fix is as simple as a new latch spring or a worn detent plate, and that’s genuinely one of the signs your lift arms need replacing that turns out to be a smaller repair than expected. Other times the whole locking mechanism has worn to the point that the arm casting itself needs to be swapped along with the hardware. Either way, we’d rather get a call about a lift that’s making a tech nervous than find out after the fact that someone kept using it because the shop couldn’t afford downtime.

Uneven Lift or Vehicle Sitting Off-Level

If a vehicle consistently settles unevenly when it’s raised — nose down, one side low, or visibly tilted — the problem often traces back to arm condition rather than the lift’s hydraulics. A bent arm, a worn adjustable pad screw, or a pivot with excess play will all cause a car to sit off-level even when the lift’s cylinders and cables are in good shape. We get calls where a shop assumes the whole lift needs a rebuild when really it’s one arm out of four that’s the culprit.

Don’t just compensate by adjusting the pad height and calling it good. An off-level vehicle on a raised lift shifts weight unpredictably, especially once someone starts pulling a transmission or removing heavy components. Get the arm inspected and, if it’s worn or bent, replace it rather than working around it indefinitely.

Worn or Damaged Contact Pads and Pad Adapters

The pads themselves aren’t structural, but the condition of the pad and its mounting hardware tells you a lot about the arm underneath. Cracked rubber, a pad screw that won’t hold its height adjustment, or a pad cup that’s bent or corroded through are all warning signs. If a pad slips out from under a lift point during a lift, the arm — even a perfectly good one — can’t do its job. We’ve replaced entire arm sets in Iowa shops simply because pad hardware corroded from years of road salt and de-icer runoff dripping off vehicles.

Check pad adapters and screws every time you inspect the arms, not just the arms themselves. It’s a quick check and a cheap fix compared to what happens if a pad fails mid-lift with a vehicle on the rack.

Age, Duty Cycle, and Manufacturer Service Life

Lift arms don’t come with an expiration date printed on them, but heavy-duty use adds up. A two post lift running two shifts a day in a fleet maintenance yard will show arm wear years before the same model sitting in a low-volume specialty shop. If your lift has been in service for well over a decade under heavy daily loads, it’s worth a proactive inspection even without obvious symptoms. Manufacturers like Rotary and Challenger publish inspection intervals for exactly this reason, and following them is cheaper than finding a problem the hard way.
