The most common question we get on a service call is some version of “how bad is it?” — and nine times out of ten, the honest answer is that the signs your lift cables need replacing were sitting in plain view for months before anyone picked up a flashlight and looked. We install and service two-post, four-post, and inground lifts all over Iowa out of our shop in Ames, and cables are the single most-replaced wear item we carry. They are also the part most likely to be ignored, because a fraying cable still lifts a car right up until the day it doesn’t. This guide walks through what we actually look for when we inspect equalization and lifting cables, in the order we look for it.

Broken Wires and Fishhooks: The Sign Nobody Can Argue With

Run a shop rag slowly along the length of the cable, from the sheave at the top of the column down to the anchor. If the rag snags, you have a broken wire — a “fishhook” in the trade. One broken wire is not automatically a scrap condition on every cable design, but it is the beginning of the end, because a wire rope loses strength progressively. Once individual wires start letting go, the remaining wires carry more load, work-harden faster, and fail sooner. Industry inspection guidance for wire rope generally calls for removal when you find several broken wires in one rope lay, or two or more broken wires at a single strand. On a car lift, we do not play the counting game. If we find fishhooks on a lifting or equalization cable, we quote a set.

Pay special attention to where the cable enters a sheave and where it terminates at the threaded stud. Those are stress concentration points, and they are also the two places you cannot see without moving the carriage. Raise the lift a few feet, lock it on the mechanical latches, kill the power, and then inspect. Broken wires hiding inside a sheave groove are one of the most-missed signs your lift cables need replacing, and they are exactly the ones that fail without warning because the sheave keeps the damage compressed and out of sight until the strand unwinds.

Slack Cables and Arms That Won’t Stay Level

On a two-post lift, the equalization cables exist to keep the two carriages traveling together. When they stretch, the carriages drift out of sync. You will notice it first as a car sitting visibly nose-down or tilted side to side, or as one carriage arriving at the top of travel before the other. Operators usually blame the hydraulic side or the flow divider. More often it is cable stretch, and it is one of the earliest signs your lift cables need replacing that shows up during normal use rather than during inspection.

New wire rope stretches — that’s constructional stretch, and it’s why a new install gets adjusted after the first few weeks of use. But there’s a difference between break-in stretch and end-of-life stretch. If you have run the adjusting nuts near the end of the threaded stud and you still have slack, or if you find yourself re-tensioning every couple of months, the rope core is crushed and the cable is done. Adding more thread or stacking washers to buy travel is a bad trade. We have pulled cables where somebody welded an extension onto the stud rather than order a set, and that repair failed at the weld. Rust, Bird-Caging, and Dry Rope

Iowa is hard on steel. Winter brine tracks in on every vehicle, drips onto the floor, and mists across the base plate and the lower cable runs. A light surface bloom on the outside of a rope is normal and not a condemnation by itself. What matters is whether the corrosion has moved into the rope’s interior. Press a screwdriver between two strands and twist gently: if you see red-brown dust or the strands look pitted where they contact each other, internal corrosion is eating the load-bearing wires from the inside, and the visible outside tells you nothing about the remaining strength.

Look also for bird-caging, where the outer strands balloon away from the core, and for kinks from a cable that was dropped, dragged, or forced around a sheave it does not fit. Both are permanent deformations. The rope will never regain its original geometry, and the wires at the deformation are already fatigued. Dry rope is a related issue — factory lubricant migrates out over years, and a dry cable abrades against itself with every cycle. We wipe our customers’ cables with a light wire-rope dressing during annual service, which slows corrosion and buys real years. It will not save a rope that is already caged, kinked, or internally rusted, though. Those go in the scrap bin.

Diameter Loss You Can Measure

The most objective of all the signs your lift cables need replacing is measured wear. Put a caliper across the rope at several points, including a spot that never passes over a sheave, and compare. Wire rope specs generally allow a small percentage of nominal diameter reduction before removal — commonly in the range of five to seven percent for the rope sizes used on automotive lifts. Beyond that, you have lost cross-sectional steel and therefore lost breaking strength.

The wear pattern tells you something too. Flat, shiny spots on one side of the rope mean it is dragging on a bracket, a column edge, or a misaligned sheave. That is a two-part repair: new cables plus fixing whatever ate the old ones. We see this constantly on older lifts where a sheave bearing has seized and the rope is sawing across a static pulley instead of rolling over a turning one. Replace the cable without freeing the sheave and the new set will look just as bad within a year. Same story with a sheave whose groove has worn oval — it pinches the rope and accelerates diameter loss. When we quote a cable set, we quote sheaves and bearings in the same breath if they need it, because doing one without the other wastes the customer’s money.

Latches, Noise, and Behavior Changes

Cables do more than lift on many designs — on a lot of two-post lifts, the equalization cable also holds the mechanical safety latches out of engagement. When a cable goes slack, the latch on that column may start dragging, clicking, or refusing to release cleanly. If one column ratchets loudly while the other is silent, or if a latch will not disengage until you bump the lift up an inch, look at cable tension before you start replacing latch springs. That behavioral change is one of the most reliable signs your lift cables need replacing on a lift that otherwise seems fine.

New noises matter generally. A rhythmic tick that repeats at the same point in travel usually means a damaged spot on the rope passing over a sheave. A groan under load can be a dry sheave, a dry rope, or both. And a hard “pop” during descent is worth stopping for immediately — that is often a strand releasing. Train whoever runs the lift to report changes in sound the same way they’d report a strange noise in a customer’s car. In a busy Iowa shop with three techs sharing two bays, nobody owns the lift, so nobody mentions the noise until it becomes a shutdown. A one-line log sheet on the column fixes that better than any policy.

Age, Cycle Count, and Records

There is no universal expiration date on lift cable, because a rope’s life depends on cycles, load, environment, and sheave condition. That said, we can share what we see across hundreds of Iowa shops. A dealership two-post that cycles thirty-plus times a day may need cables inside four to six years. A general repair shop running a dozen cycles a day often gets eight to twelve years. A home garage four-post used a few times a month can go far longer — but those cables sit unmoved and unlubricated in an unheated building, so corrosion, not fatigue, is usually what condemns them.

Records matter more than the calendar. If you cannot say when the cables were last replaced, and the lift is more than a decade old, budget for a set. ANSI/ALI guidance calls for annual inspection of lifts by a qualified inspector, and cable condition is part of that inspection for a reason. We do those inspections across central Iowa, and a documented cable replacement is one of the cheapest ways to keep a lift in service and keep your liability story clean. Cost-wise, a cable set for a common two-post lands in the low hundreds for the parts, with labor depending on column access and how much sheave work comes along with it — always less than a bent hood and a scared technician.

When a shop calls and describes the signs your lift cables need replacing, the first thing we ask for is the data plate: brand, model, serial, and capacity. Cable sets are not interchangeable across models — length, end fitting, stud thread, and rope construction all vary, and an almost-right cable will bind in the sheave or run out of adjustment. From there it is a straightforward job: unload the lift, relieve tension, replace cables as a set, never one at a time, inspect and replace sheaves and bearings as needed, re-tension, cycle and adjust, and verify latch synchronization at every lock position.
