The most common question we get on the phone is some version of “how do I know when it’s time?” — and when it comes to equalizer or lifting cables, the honest answer is that the signs your lift needs cables are almost always visible if you know where to point the flashlight. They fray, they stretch, they rust from the inside out, and they tell you long before they let go. Broken Strands Are the One Sign You Never Debate
Run a shop rag slowly along the length of the cable. If it snags, stop. That snag is a broken wire strand — what the industry calls a “meathook” — and it means the cable has already begun failing internally. Wire rope is built from dozens of small wires laid into strands, and strands laid around a core. When individual wires start snapping, the remaining ones carry more load, which makes them snap faster. It is not a linear decline. A cable with three broken wires today can have twelve next month.
The ANSI standard most shops are measured against allows a very small number of broken wires per lay length before the rope is condemned, and in practice we don’t split hairs. If we find broken strands on one cable of a two-post, we quote a full set. Cables age together, they’ve seen the same cycles and the same humidity, and replacing one while leaving its twin in service just guarantees a second trip. Pay extra attention where the cable passes over a sheave and where it enters the end fitting. Those two spots absorb the most flex and the most abuse, and that’s where nine out of ten breaks we find are hiding.
Uneven Carriages and Arms That Won’t Level
On a two-post, the equalizer cables exist for one job: keeping both carriages at the same height regardless of how the load sits. When one side starts riding an inch or two lower than the other and you have to nudge it back with the safety locks, you’re looking at cable stretch. Wire rope elongates under repeated load — that’s normal and expected — and the adjusting nuts at the cable ends exist to take that slack up. The problem comes when you’ve run out of adjustment thread. Once the nut bottoms out, there is nothing left to correct with, and the only fix is new rope.
Four-post owners see the same thing differently. Instead of one carriage lagging, you’ll notice the runways sitting out of plane, or the lift will refuse to seat evenly into all four lock positions. Some owners chase this for months adjusting locks and shimming the base when the real culprit is a stretched set of cables. Here’s our field test: raise the lift empty to about chest height, hit the locks, and measure from the floor to the same reference point on each carriage or runway. More than a quarter inch of difference on a two-post means it’s time for a real inspection. Rust, Dry Rope, and Missing Lubrication
Wire rope is a machine. The wires slide against each other every time the lift cycles, and they need lubricant to do that without wearing. A cable that looks dry, chalky, or orange has lost its internal lube and is now grinding itself apart with every trip up and down. In an Iowa shop that means salt-laden slush dripping off vehicles all winter, then baking dry in July. We’ve pulled cables out of four-year-old lifts in unheated pole barns that looked worse than eight-year-old cables in a climate-controlled dealership bay.
Surface rust alone isn’t automatically a death sentence — light oxidation on the outer wires can be cleaned and re-lubed with a proper wire rope dressing, not chassis grease and not spray-can penetrating oil. But pitted rust, rust that flakes off in sheets, or rust weeping out from between the strands means the core is compromised. The core carries a big share of the load, and you cannot inspect it. Once corrosion has gotten in there, replacement is the only responsible call.
While you’re looking, check the sheaves themselves. A frozen or grooved sheave will destroy a brand-new cable in a matter of months, so we always quote sheaves and bushings alongside rope when the pulleys don’t spin freely by hand. This is one of the clearest signs your lift needs cables and hardware together rather than rope alone. Skipping the sheave is how shops end up buying two cable sets in three years.
Kinks, Birdcaging, and Flattened Sections
A kink is permanent damage. Once wire rope has been bent sharply enough to deform the lay of the strands, the geometry that lets it share load evenly is gone and no amount of straightening brings it back. We see kinks most often from installation mistakes — a cable dragged across a concrete edge, routed through the wrong path, or forced around a sheave that’s too small. If your lift was installed by whoever had a forklift that day rather than a lift tech, look hard for this.
Birdcaging is the opposite failure: the strands unlay and balloon outward, usually from shock loading or from the cable going slack and then snapping tight. A birdcaged section is finished. Flattened or scrubbed spots, where the rope has worn against a guide or a column until the outer wires have a shiny flat face, indicate the same problem from wear rather than shock — and a flattened cable has lost measurable diameter, which means lost strength.
Measure it. Put a caliper across the rope at a worn spot and at a clean spot. If the worn section is more than about five percent under nominal diameter, replace the set. Diameter loss is one of the more objective signs your lift needs cables, and it’s the number that ends arguments with owners who want another season out of a tired lift. We keep a chart in the van because eyeballing wire rope diameter is genuinely hard, and being off by a thirty-second of an inch changes the answer.
Noise, Jerky Travel, and Locks That Don’t Catch
Cables communicate through sound. A healthy set is nearly silent aside from the hydraulics. When you start hearing popping, ticking, or a gritty scraping as the carriages travel, something in the cable path is binding. It might be the rope riding out of the sheave groove, a broken wire catching on the sheave flange, or a cable that’s gone slack enough to slap. None of those get better on their own.
Jerky, stuttering travel — where the lift moves in small jumps instead of a smooth climb — is another flag. On two-post lifts, this often shows up alongside safety locks that engage on one side but not the other, because the equalizer system is no longer holding both carriages in the same plane. Owners frequently assume the lock mechanism has failed and start replacing lock dogs and springs. Sometimes that’s right. Often the locks are fine and the cable is the reason they can’t line up.

Age, Cycle Count, and What Your Records Say
Cables have a service life even when nothing looks wrong. Manufacturers don’t publish a hard expiration date because duty cycle varies so wildly — a quick-lube bay cycling forty times a day is a completely different animal than a home garage lifting a project car twice a month. What we tell Iowa shop owners is this: if you’re running a high-volume bay, plan on cable inspection at every annual and replacement somewhere in the five-to-eight-year window. Low-volume and residential lifts can go considerably longer if the environment is dry.
The catch is documentation. ALI-certified annual inspections exist partly to build a paper trail, and if you can’t say when the cables were last replaced, you’re guessing. We’ve walked into shops with lifts from the early 2000s where nobody on staff had been there long enough to know the history. In those cases we treat the cables as unknown and price a set, because unknown age plus unknown maintenance is not a risk worth carrying over an employee’s head.
Cost-wise, a cable set for a typical two-post runs in the low-to-mid hundreds for parts on common models, with labor depending on how buried the routing is. Compared to a rebuild or a full lift replacement it’s cheap insurance. What to Do Once You’ve Spotted the Signs
Tag it out first. A cardboard sign and a pulled disconnect are cheaper than an incident, and every shop we’ve worked with that had a close call wishes they’d done it a day earlier.
