Why Inspectors Start With Paperwork, Not Steel
Almost every shop we visit expects the inspection to start under the lift. It rarely does. The first thing an inspector or insurance loss-control rep asks for is documentation: the manufacturer’s installation manual, the concrete anchor torque record, the ALI certification label or plate, and the log of periodic inspections. If you cannot produce a paper trail, everything that follows gets scrutinized harder. We have seen mechanically sound lifts written up simply because nobody could prove when they were last serviced or who installed them.
Build a binder — a literal three-ring binder that lives in the office, not a folder buried on someone’s laptop. One tab per lift, with the model and serial number written on the tab. Inside goes the manual, the original installation paperwork, anchor torque values, any repair invoices, and a dated log sheet. Our crews leave that documentation behind on every install, but shops lose it during ownership changes and remodels. Concrete, Anchors, and Floor Condition
Anchor bolts are the single most common write-up we see on a state inspection lift checklist, and they are also the cheapest thing to fix before someone shows up with a clipboard. Inspectors look for the correct number of anchors per baseplate, anchors of the specified diameter and embedment, no missing washers or nuts, and torque values that match the manufacturer’s spec. They will also look at the concrete itself — cracks radiating away from a baseplate, spalling at the anchor holes, or a hollow sound when the slab is tapped near the column.
Slab thickness and strength matter too. Most two-post lifts require a minimum thickness and compressive strength, and a lot of older Iowa shop floors were poured long before anyone was lifting a 10,000 lb truck indoors. We have core-drilled floors in Story County that measured well under the required depth, which means the fix is a reinforced pad, not a longer bolt. If your columns rock even slightly when the lift is loaded, that is not a torque problem, that is a foundation problem. Get a torque wrench on every anchor annually, replace any anchor that will not hold spec, and never reuse an anchor hole without following the manufacturer’s offset guidance. Cables, Chains, and Equalizer Systems
On a two-post lift, the equalizer cables keep the carriages level; they are not lifting components, but a broken one takes the lift out of service instantly. Inspectors run a gloved hand along the accessible length looking for broken strands, kinks, corrosion, flat spots, and fraying at the sheaves. Any visible broken wire is a replacement, not a repair. On four-post lifts, the lifting cables are load-bearing, so the standard is stricter — sheave condition, cable tension balance across all four corners, and no rust bleeding out of the swaged fittings.
Sheaves themselves get overlooked. A seized or grooved sheave will chew a brand-new cable in a season, so we always spin every pulley by hand during a pre-inspection. Chain-driven lifts get the same treatment: check for stretch, stiff links, missing master link clips, and adequate lubrication. We keep cables in stock for most Rotary and Challenger models and can cross-reference by serial number, which matters because the same model year can have two different cable lengths depending on column height. Replace cables in complete sets, never one at a time, and re-check tension after the first few cycles. Locks, Latches, and Safety Devices
This is where inspectors get genuinely picky, and rightly so. Every automatic lock must engage audibly and consistently through the full travel of the lift, and the release mechanism must return the locks to the engaged position when the handle is let go. We test by raising the lift in stages and listening for each click on both columns, then lowering onto the locks and confirming both sides seat evenly. A lift that only clicks on one column is a serious finding — usually a stretched lock cable, a bent latch, or a seized pivot that a little disassembly and grease will fix.
Arm restraints on two-post lifts get checked next. The gear teeth should be intact and the restraint should resist rotation firmly when the arm is loaded. Worn restraints are common on high-volume lifts and the replacement kits are inexpensive. On four-post and scissor equipment, inspectors look at the mechanical safety locks, the slack-cable devices, and the pressure-holding capability of the hydraulic system. On a mid-rise or scissor, the torsion bar and safety bar must both function. Hydraulics, Power Unit, and Electrical
Leaks are the obvious one. Inspectors look at the cylinder rod seals, hose fittings, the pump reservoir, and the floor underneath for a drip pattern. A weeping fitting gets a note; a puddle gets a write-up. They also check that the lift holds position under load for several minutes without creeping down, which points at either a cylinder seal or a leaking check valve in the power unit. Fluid level and cleanliness matter — dark, milky, or sludgy fluid tells an inspector the lift has not been maintained regardless of how clean the columns look.
Electrical is the second half of this section and often the messier half. We look for a dedicated, properly sized circuit, a disconnect the operator can actually reach, intact conduit and strain relief at the motor, no extension cords or open junction boxes, and a control that is wired for momentary operation rather than jury-rigged to stay on. Fix electrical findings with a licensed electrician, not with tape.
Labels, Capacity Placards, and Operator Training
Missing decals fail more lifts than broken parts do, and it is the most frustrating finding in the business because a decal kit costs almost nothing. Inspectors expect a legible capacity label, the ALI/ANSI safety instruction placard, the lifting-point and operator warning decals, and the manufacturer’s serial data plate. Decades of solvent, brake dust, and pressure washing erase them. If yours are illegible, order a replacement kit by model before your inspection date rather than arguing about it on the day.
Training documentation is the companion item. The standard expects that anyone operating the lift has been trained on that specific lift, and that training is recorded. A single sheet listing each tech’s name, the lift model, the date, and who did the training satisfies most inspectors. We also recommend posting a laminated one-page operating summary on each column — lifting points, capacity, lock procedure, and what to do if the lift will not lower. Shops that keep an internal state inspection lift checklist posted in the bay tend to sail through, because the techs are already doing the right thing daily instead of cramming the week before.
