A truck lift column is one of the most useful pieces of equipment in a modern heavy-duty shop, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. Customers call us at Auto Lift Services in Ames and ask about columns without a clear picture of how they actually work, how they differ from each other, or what they cost to own. This article is the plain-English explanation we usually give on the phone, expanded so you can read it before you dial. What a truck lift column actually is

A truck lift column is a self-contained vertical lifting unit, roughly seven feet tall, mounted on solid rubber wheels so a technician can push it into position under any wheel of a heavy vehicle. Each column carries its own motor, hydraulic pump, control head, and safety systems. The column has forks or a saddle at the bottom that slide under the vehicle tire, and when the motor runs, the column raises that single wheel straight up. Four or six columns working in sync raise the entire vehicle.

The advantage over a fixed lift is straightforward. A fixed lift lives in one bay forever, and it has a fixed layout that limits which vehicles fit. Columns roll wherever you need them, adapt to any wheelbase, and handle vehicles that would never fit a drive-on platform. The disadvantage is that columns are more mechanically complex per unit than a fixed lift, so parts inventory and service knowledge matter more. That is where working with a real installer like our team pays off.

Wireless versus cabled columns

The industry has moved almost entirely to wireless communication between columns. Older sets carry a physical cable between each column, and that cable synchronizes lifting so all four corners move together. Wireless columns use encrypted radio between the control heads to accomplish the same thing without any physical connection. The wireless system is faster to set up, easier to move, and eliminates the trip hazard and wear point that cables introduce. Every new set we sell today is wireless by default.

Cabled columns still exist for a couple of reasons. They cost a little less up front, and they are simpler electronically, which appeals to some shops that want fewer failure modes. For most Iowa customers, though, the wireless upside is worth the modest price bump. A wireless truck lift column also communicates its status back to the control head continuously, so an operator sees load, height, and any fault codes in real time from any column in the set. That visibility catches problems before they become failures.

Battery, charger, and daily use

Modern columns run on 12V or 24V batteries for the actual lifting motion, with a plug-in charger to keep the batteries topped up when the column is idle. A fully charged set can perform many lift cycles before recharging, and the batteries typically last several years before replacement. When shops in Iowa call us complaining that their columns feel slow or refuse to lift full capacity, the answer is almost always tired batteries. Replace them and the columns behave like new.

Daily use is straightforward. Roll the columns into position, plug them into shop power if the batteries need topping, sync the wireless network, and lift. A trained operator can position and raise a Class 8 tractor in under ten minutes. When you are done, roll the columns back to their storage locations along a wall, plug them in for the next charge cycle, and you are ready for the next job. That routine is a big part of why modern truck lift column sets are so popular in Iowa fleet shops today.

Forks, saddles, and adapters

Every truck lift column has some form of tire engagement at the bottom. The most common design is a set of adjustable steel forks that slide under either side of the tire and lift by cradling the wheel. The forks adjust to accommodate different tire widths, from small light-truck tires up to super-single truck tires at 445mm. Some sets also offer a saddle attachment for equipment with unusual wheel geometry, like military vehicles or specialty agricultural units.

Adapters matter more than most buyers realize during the initial purchase. If your shop routinely sees a mix of dual-tire drive axles and super-single trailer tires, you want to confirm the fork range covers everything. If you service buses with wheelchair-lift undercarriage clearance issues, the column head profile matters. When we quote a set to an Iowa customer, we ask about the actual tire and wheel configurations they will lift, and we spec the fork range to match. Universal is a marketing word. Fit is what actually matters when the truck is in the bay.

Capacity ratings per column

Columns are rated per unit, and the total set capacity is that rating times the column count. A 15,000 lb column times four is 60,000 lb of total set capacity. An 18,000 lb column times four is 72,000. A 22,000 lb column times six is 132,000. The number that matters for your buying decision is the actual axle load you will lift, plus a safety margin. If you routinely lift 30,000 lb tandem axles, an 18,000 lb per column set gives you a safe margin. A 15,000 lb per column set does not.

Most Iowa shops we work with land on 18,000 lb columns as the practical minimum for full Class 8 truck work. Municipal shops with only Class 5 through Class 7 equipment sometimes go with 15,000 lb columns and save money. Shops running heavy tandem trailers and specialty vehicles jump straight to 22,000 lb columns. When you are evaluating a specific set, always confirm the per-column rating is at least as high as your heaviest expected axle load per pair of columns.

Servicing a truck lift column

Columns need annual inspection under ALI recommendations, and they benefit from a documented maintenance schedule. Batteries get replaced every three to five years depending on duty cycle. Hydraulic fluid gets sampled and changed on a manufacturer schedule. Chains and screws get inspected for wear, and safety pawls get tested for engagement. When we do annual service in Iowa, we cover all of that plus a full function test at rated capacity. The whole visit is usually a half-day per set.
