What an Arm Restraint Actually Does
On almost every modern two-post lift, each swing arm has a toothed gear or ratchet segment at its pivot, plus a spring-loaded pawl or pin that drops into those teeth as the carriage rises off the floor. Below a few inches of travel, the arm swings freely so you can position pads under the pinch welds. Once the carriage lifts clear, the restraint engages and the arm can no longer rotate. That is the whole design intent: the vehicle cannot walk sideways off the pads because the arms physically cannot move.
The mechanisms differ by builder. Rotary’s SPOA and SPO series use a gear-and-pin arrangement driven by a lever and cable. Challenger uses a similar ratcheting gear with a spring-return actuator. BendPak’s home and light-commercial lifts often use a sliding collar with a locking pin engaging a toothed plate. In every case the failure modes are the same family of problems, and every case calls for the same discipline. A real two post arm restraint service means verifying that every arm on the lift engages independently, holds under load, and releases cleanly when lowered — not just eyeballing that the parts look present. The Failures We Find Most Often
Worn gear teeth are number one. Decades of engagement under load round the tooth crowns until the pin can climb out under lateral force. You can see it — the teeth go from crisp square profiles to sloped ramps. Number two is a broken or stretched return spring, so the pin never gets pushed down into the gear at all. Number three is a bent or mushroomed pin, usually from someone forcing an arm to swing while the lift was raised. Number four is dirt: grease, brake dust, tire shavings, and Iowa road salt pack solid inside the pivot until the pin cannot travel.
Then there is the sneaky one — the actuator cable or linkage that stretches or seizes. On lifts that use a cable to trip the restraint on descent, a stretched cable can hold the pin partly out of engagement at working height. It looks engaged. It is not. We find this on high-cycle lifts in tire shops and quick-lube bays where the hoist goes up and down forty times a day. How We Test Engagement in the Bay
The test we run is simple and it does not require a vehicle. Raise the carriages a few feet with the arms empty. Try to swing each arm by hand, then with a pry bar applying steady lateral pressure at the pad. A healthy restraint stops the arm dead with no more than the small amount of backlash designed into the gear — usually a fraction of a tooth. If the arm moves a quarter inch and then catches, that is backlash. If it moves an inch, walks over a tooth, or catches only after a lurch, the gear is worn out and the arm assembly needs attention.
We also verify disengagement. Lower the lift to the floor and confirm every arm swings freely again. An arm that stays locked at the bottom means a seized pin, and that is how technicians end up prying on arms and bending pins in the first place. We document all four arms by position, note the lift’s serial number, and photograph the gear faces so the shop has a baseline for the next inspection. That documentation is the difference between a real service record and a checkmark. Rebuild or Replace the Arm Assembly
This is the decision that drives cost, so we are direct about it. If the gear teeth are sharp and the problem is a spring, pin, bushing, or packed grease, it is a rebuild — parts and an hour or two of labor per arm, and you get a restraint that performs like new. If the gear teeth are rounded, cracked, or the gear is welded to the arm as a single unit (common on older two-post designs), you are replacing the arm assembly. There is no legitimate way to build teeth back up with a welder and a grinder, and we will not do it.
Arm assemblies are model-and-serial specific. A Rotary SPO12 from one production era does not share arms with the next, and aftermarket “universal” arms rarely match the pad height, extension range, or restraint geometry. That is why we always start from the serial tag. On older lifts where arms are discontinued, sometimes the honest answer is that a two post arm restraint service is not the right spend — a lift with worn restraints, worn cables, and pitted columns is telling you something. We would rather quote you a new hoist than sell you four arms for a machine with three years left in it.
What ANSI and OSHA Expect From You
ANSI/ALI ALOIM, the standard covering operation, inspection, and maintenance of automotive lifts, calls for annual inspection by a qualified lift inspector plus regular owner checks. Arm restraints are explicitly part of that scope. OSHA does not publish a lift-specific rule, but it enforces the general duty clause and will cite manufacturer and consensus standards when something goes wrong. If a vehicle comes off a hoist and the restraints were dead, “we didn’t know” is not a defense that survives an inspection or an insurance review.
Practically, this means two things for Iowa shops. First, keep a written record — date, lift serial, arms checked, parts replaced, technician name. Second, do not wait for the annual inspection to catch a dead restraint. Salt. That is most of it. From November through April, every vehicle that comes into a central Iowa bay drags brine and grit up onto the underbody, and it drips directly onto the arm pivots and restraint gears sitting right below. Add the freeze-thaw cycle in an unheated or partially heated shop and you get corrosion inside the pin bore where nobody looks. The fix is not exotic. Wipe the arm pivots down at the end of winter, shoot the pin bores and gear teeth with a lithium or moly grease that will not wash out, and cycle each arm through its full swing so the grease distributes. Shops that do this get a decade or more out of factory restraint hardware. Shops that do not are the ones calling us in year five.
