Two post lift anchor torque specs are the single most overlooked number on a lift install, and they’re also the number most likely to get a car dropped on someone’s foot if it’s wrong. We’ve walked into more than a few Iowa shops where the lift itself was fine but the anchor bolts were snugged down with an impact gun and a guess. Getting two post lift anchor torque specs right isn’t optional trivia for a certification test — it’s the difference between a lift that holds a truck at full rise for ten years and one that walks loose in eighteen months. Why Torque Specs Are Manufacturer-Specific, Not Universal

There is no single set of two post lift anchor torque specs that applies to every lift. A Rotary SPO12 with 3/4-inch wedge anchors calls for a different torque value than a Challenger CL10 with 5/8-inch anchors, and both differ again depending on the anchor manufacturer — Red Head, Powers, and Simpson wedge anchors are not interchangeable products even at the same diameter. This is why the anchor bolt torque chart printed in your lift’s installation manual, not a number pulled off a forum post, is the only source we trust.

We keep a binder of current manufacturer specs in the truck for exactly this reason. When a shop calls us because their lift feels loose or a bolt has backed out, the first question we ask is which lift model and which anchor brand went in, because that determines the correct torque spec before we even touch a wrench. Skipping this step and applying a generic number is how anchors get either under-torqued and pull loose, or over-torqued and crack the concrete around the hole. Either outcome puts the whole lift at risk.

Typical Torque Ranges We See on Iowa Installs

While every lift has its own chart, most 3/4-inch wedge anchors used on two post lifts in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb class fall somewhere in the 100 to 150 ft-lb range, and 5/8-inch anchors typically land lower, often in the 60 to 100 ft-lb range. These numbers move up for heavier commercial lifts and down for lighter home-garage models, which is exactly why we double-check the two post lift anchor torque specs against the actual documentation for the unit in front of us rather than relying on memory.

We’ve also seen installers confuse the torque needed to seat a wedge anchor with the torque needed to hold it long-term, and those aren’t always the same number. Some manufacturers specify an initial set torque and a final check torque after the anchor has been loaded. Missing that second step is a common reason lifts that were installed correctly still develop loose anchors within the first year, especially in older Iowa slabs where the concrete strength varies from one bay to the next.

Concrete Strength Changes the Real-World Number

Torque specs assume a minimum concrete compressive strength, usually 3,000 to 4,000 PSI cured a minimum of 28 days. If the slab under your lift doesn’t meet that, hitting the printed torque spec on paper doesn’t mean the anchor is actually holding at rated capacity — it may spin, crack the surrounding concrete, or simply pull out under load despite reading correctly on the wrench. This is one of the most common issues we find on older Iowa shop floors and detached garages where the slab was poured decades ago for a different purpose.

Before we even get to torque, we’re checking the slab: thickness, visible cracking, rebar or wire mesh interference, and age. A four-inch slab with no reinforcement is a different install than a six-inch reinforced pad, even if both lifts call for the same anchor bolt torque spec. When the concrete is questionable, we’ll recommend a core sample or a slab replacement rather than torque an anchor to spec and hope the surrounding material holds. It rarely does under real load.

Tools That Actually Get You an Accurate Reading

An impact wrench cannot give you a reliable torque reading, full stop. We use a calibrated torque wrench — click-type or beam-type, both work if they’re calibrated — every time we set anchors, and we check calibration on our own tools regularly because a wrench that’s drifted five or ten percent off is enough to put an anchor outside spec without anyone noticing. If your shop is setting its own lift anchors, this is the one tool upgrade that pays for itself the first time it prevents a callback.

We also recommend torquing anchors in a specific sequence rather than tightening one bolt down fully before moving to the next. Working around the base plate in stages, bringing each anchor up gradually, keeps the base plate seated flat and prevents uneven loading that can crack concrete or leave one anchor bearing more stress than the others. It’s a small habit that makes a real difference over the life of the lift.

Re-Torquing Schedules Most Shops Skip

Anchor torque isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it number. Most manufacturers recommend re-checking anchor torque within the first month of use and then at regular service intervals after that, because concrete can settle slightly and vibration from daily lift cycles can work bolts loose over time. We build a torque re-check into every annual inspection we do, and it’s one of the fastest ways to catch a developing problem before it becomes a lift that shifts under load.

Warning Signs Your Anchors Are Off Spec

You don’t need a torque wrench to catch some of the early symptoms. A base plate that shows daylight or gaps at the concrete when the lift is unloaded, visible rust streaking or cracking radiating out from an anchor hole, or a faint clicking or shifting sound during raise and lower cycles are all signs worth investigating immediately. Any lift that visibly rocks or shifts at full extension needs to be taken out of service until it’s inspected, no exceptions.
