A good two post lift bay layout is decided with a tape measure and a piece of chalk, not after the anchors are already in the slab. We are Auto Lift Services out of Ames, Iowa, and we install and service lifts across the state — everything from a single asymmetric unit in a two-car home garage to a row of 12,000 lb columns in a fleet shop. The calls we hate getting are the ones that start with “we already poured” or “we already set it, but the doors hit.” Almost every one of those problems was avoidable with an hour of planning. So this article is the walkthrough we give customers over the phone before anybody orders anything: how to lay out the bay, what clearances actually matter, and where Iowa shops most often get burned.

Start With the Bay, Not the Lift Model

Most people shop backward. They find a lift they like, buy it, and then try to make the building work. We do it the other way: measure the room first, then pick from what fits. Get four numbers before anything else. Bay width wall-to-wall or column-to-column. Bay depth from the overhead door to the back wall. Lowest overhead obstruction — not the peak of the ceiling, the bottom of the truss, the light fixture, the sprinkler head, the garage door track when the door is open. And slab thickness plus age, if you know it.

Those four numbers eliminate about half the catalog immediately, which is a good thing. A 12,000 lb clear-floor two post needs meaningfully more overhead room than a 9,000 lb baseplate model, and if your bottom-of-truss height is 11 feet, that decision is already made for you. We would rather tell you that on a phone call than have a freight truck show up with something that cannot rise. When we drive out to look at a bay in Ankeny or Council Bluffs, the first thing out of the truck is a tape and a laser. The lift catalog comes second. A two post lift bay layout that respects the building you already have will always work better than one that fights it.

Column Spacing and the Real Working Width

The published width of a two post is not the width you need. Between the columns you have roughly 100 to 118 inches on most symmetric models and a bit less on asymmetric units, but the footprint that matters is the columns plus the door swing plus a body you can walk around. We plan on a minimum of 24 to 30 inches of clear walkway on each side of the columns in a working shop. Less than that and your techs are turning sideways with a transmission jack, banging knuckles on the overhead beam, and dinging the customer’s fender with a door.

This is where asymmetric versus symmetric earns its keep. An asymmetric layout rotates the columns and moves the vehicle rearward so the front doors open past the column — huge in a tight bay where the same lift also has to serve as a general service position. Symmetric handles longer wheelbases and heavier trucks better and centers the load, which we prefer for fleet work and dually pickups. If your bay is 12 feet wide, asymmetric is usually the answer. Ceiling Height, Overhead Beams, and Door Tracks

Ceiling height is where home-garage projects die. A clear-floor two post carries the equalization cables and hoses through an overhead crossbeam, and that beam sits above the columns — so your usable height is ceiling minus beam minus vehicle. Most clear-floor units want 12 feet or more of true clearance to lift a full-size pickup to a comfortable working height. In a standard residential garage with a 9 or 10 foot ceiling, a baseplate model that routes everything across the floor is nearly always the right call, or a four post if you mainly want storage.

Then there is the garage door. We have lost count of the Iowa garages where the sectional door, when open, hangs right where the overhead beam wants to live. Measure to the bottom of the open door panel and the track rollers, not the closed door. Same story with lighting, unit heaters, radiant tube heat, and air lines — all of it moves for less money before the lift is set than after. Sprinkler heads in commercial buildings are a code issue, not a preference, so loop in your fire contractor early. We build ceiling constraints into every two post lift bay layout we draw because it is the single most expensive thing to discover late.

Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Talk About

Anchors are only as good as what they bite into. Manufacturer specs for most 9,000 to 12,000 lb two post lifts call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 psi concrete, cured at least 28 days, and heavier-capacity units ask for more depth and sometimes a reinforced pad. Older Iowa shops built in the fifties and sixties are a coin flip — we have core-drilled slabs that were a beautiful six inches and others that were three inches of concrete over dirt and a floor drain nobody remembered.

If you do not know what you have, find out. A test hole in the anchor zone costs almost nothing compared to a failed installation. When the slab does not measure up, the fix is a cut-out and a new reinforced pad under each column, which is a half-day of concrete work and a cure period — annoying, but not a project killer. Also mind expansion joints, control joints, cracks, and post-tension cables. Anchors do not belong within a few inches of a joint or crack, and that constraint alone sometimes shifts the whole two post lift bay layout a foot to one side. Power, Air, and Where the Power Unit Lives

The power unit column is a decision, not a default. Most two post lifts ship configured for the motor on one side, and once it is anchored you are living with that choice. Put the power unit on the side with your electrical drop and your air line so you are not running conduit across a walkway or a door opening. In a two-bay shop with lifts side by side, we usually put the power units on the outboard columns so the center aisle stays clean and both control handles are reachable without walking around a vehicle.

Electrically, plan on a dedicated circuit. Single-phase 208-230V is typical for home and light commercial, three-phase if the building has it and you want the motor to last under heavy duty cycles. Have a licensed electrician size the breaker and wire to the nameplate — we install lifts, we do not guess at code. Air matters too, because most clear-floor units use air to release the mechanical locks; no air means no lowering, which is a bad surprise on a Friday afternoon. Run a regulated air drop to the power unit column while the walls are open if you are building new.

Traffic Flow, Alignment Bays, and Neighbors

A bay is not an island. Think about how a vehicle enters, where the tech’s cart lives, whether the parts runner can get past a lifted truck, and what happens when the bay next door is also full. In shops we lay out around Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, we sketch the drive-in path first — including the turn radius from the overhead door — because a lift that is perfectly spaced on paper can still be impossible to load if the door is off-center from the bay.

Adjacent equipment drives the layout too. If a tire changer and balancer share the bay, keep the machines out of the column shadow so the boom has room to swing. If the neighboring bay is an alignment position, keep the two post lift far enough away that alignment targets and camera stands have clear sightlines. And leave room for a rolling jack, a transmission jack, and an oil drain — the accessories that always show up after the equipment is set. We also budget space for a bench or a tool cabinet on the back wall, because techs will put one there whether the drawing says so or not. How We Lay Out a Bay in Person

Here is the actual process. We chalk the column centerlines on the slab and set a temporary vehicle in position to check door swing and walkways. We shoot the lowest overhead point with a laser and write it on the wall. We check the slab thickness and note every joint and crack in the anchor zone. We mark where the power unit, electrical drop, and air line will land. Then we back up, look at the whole bay, and move something — there is almost always one adjustment worth making before a hammer drill comes out.

Only then do we install: drill, set anchors to spec torque, shim the columns plumb, set the overhead assembly or floor plate, route cables, fill and bleed the power unit, and cycle the lift through its full travel while checking lock engagement on both sides. We finish with an ANSI-standard check and show whoever will use it how to inspect cables and locks weekly.
