What “bypassing” actually means inside the tube
A two post lift cylinder is a simple machine: a chrome rod attached to a piston, riding inside a honed steel tube. Pressurized oil fills the space beneath the piston and forces it up. The only thing keeping that oil on the correct side of the piston is a set of seals — typically a cup or U-seal, a wear ring, and a rod seal at the gland. When the piston seal hardens, nicks, or wears past its interference fit, oil migrates from the high-pressure side to the low-pressure side. The piston stops climbing efficiently and the load slowly settles. That is bypass.
The reason this confuses so many shop owners is that bypass is an internal failure. External leaks announce themselves — you see chrome weeping at the gland, you see a stain spreading on the concrete. Internal bypass is silent and clean. The oil never leaves the system; it just circulates uselessly inside the cylinder or drains back to the reservoir. So the tank level stays normal, the floor stays dry, and the lift still goes up, which is exactly why crews keep using it for months. Meanwhile the pump runs longer on every cycle, the oil runs hotter, and the seal wears faster. Symptom one: the lift drifts down under load and holds when empty
This is the single most diagnostic behavior we see. Raise the lift with nothing on the arms and it holds all day. Put 4,000 pounds on it and it creeps down a fraction of an inch a minute. Load is what creates the pressure differential the seal has to fight. An empty carriage barely loads the piston, so a marginal seal still holds. Add a pickup and the pressure climbs, and oil finds the path of least resistance past that worn lip.
We tell shops to quantify it instead of eyeballing it. Raise a known vehicle to roughly chest height, mark the carriage position on the column with a piece of tape or a paint pen, and note the time. Come back in thirty minutes and measure. Any measurable drop with the lift off the locks is a problem worth a service call. A quarter inch in thirty minutes is a seal that is starting to go. Two inches in thirty minutes is a cylinder we would take out of service the same day. And here is the part techs miss: on a two post, the arms should be resting on mechanical locks whenever anyone is under the car. Drift while sitting on the locks is not possible — the locks carry the load. Drift between lock positions, though, is exactly when someone gets hurt.
Symptom two: uneven carriages on a two-cylinder lift
Most modern two post lifts run a single cylinder with an equalizer cable system, but plenty of older Rotary and Challenger units — and a lot of the 1980s and 90s iron still working in Iowa farm shops — use two cylinders tied together hydraulically. On those, a bypassing cylinder shows up as one side lagging the other. You raise the lift and the driver’s side carriage arrives at the top an inch or two behind the passenger side. Or the lift comes up level and then one column settles while the other holds.
Before we condemn a cylinder on those lifts, we check the equalizer cables and the sheaves, because a stretched cable produces a nearly identical complaint. The tell is timing. A cable problem is consistent — the same offset every cycle, at every height, loaded or empty. A bypass problem gets worse with load and worse as the oil warms up, because hot oil is thinner and slips past a worn seal more easily. If a lift is level cold at 7 a.m. and two inches out by 3 p.m., that is not a cable. Symptom three: longer raise times and a pump that will not shut up
Shops get used to their lift’s rhythm. When a unit that always went from floor to full height in 45 seconds starts taking 70, something is consuming flow. On a bypassing cylinder, part of every gallon the pump moves is going right back where it came from instead of lifting the load. The power unit compensates by running longer, and the motor duty cycle climbs.
That extra run time creates a second, very audible clue: heat and noise. Reach over and touch the power unit housing after three or four cycles. A healthy unit is warm. A unit fighting a bypassing cylinder gets uncomfortably hot, and the oil in the reservoir can climb well past 140 degrees, which degrades it and accelerates seal wear all over the system. Ruling out the things that mimic bypass
We do not sell a cylinder until we have eliminated four cheaper causes. First, the lowering valve. Second, the check valve inside the power unit — same behavior, same complaint. Third, an external leak you cannot see: hoses that run through a floor trough or up inside a column can weep for months without showing on the slab. The clean way to separate them is to isolate the cylinder. Raise the lift, then close a ball valve or cap the line at the cylinder port. If the carriage now holds rock solid, the cylinder is fine and the problem is upstream in the valve or hose. If it still drifts with the supply blocked, oil is moving past the piston and you have confirmed bypass. That single test saves shops from replacing a good cylinder because of a two-dollar valve seat. Seal kit or new cylinder? What we recommend
Once bypass is confirmed, the decision is rebuild or replace. We look at three things: the condition of the chrome rod, the condition of the bore, and the availability of parts. If the rod is clean and straight with no pitting or scoring, and the tube hones out smooth, a seal kit is a legitimate repair and we will do it. But we are honest with customers when a rebuild is a bad bet. Pitted chrome will destroy a new rod seal in weeks. The second driver is moisture. An unheated Iowa shop swings from 90 degrees and humid in July to below zero in January, and that pumps damp air in and out of the reservoir all year. Water in the oil rusts bores and pits rods. Keep the fill cap and breather intact, keep the reservoir topped to the correct level, and wipe the exposed rod section clean rather than letting road salt and brake dust ride down into the gland.
