When a lift settles or drifts down slowly, the first thing we check is whether the locks are actually engaging. On many Rotary and Challenger models, the locking pawls or latches can wear down over years of use, especially if the lift has been run hard in a commercial shop with high daily cycle counts. A worn pawl might look like it’s catching, but it’s actually riding on a rounded edge that lets the carriage slip past under load.

Over time, the piston seals inside the cylinder wear from heat, contamination, or age, letting fluid bypass the piston and allowing the ram to retract slowly under load.
This kind of drift feels different from a lock issue — it’s usually smoother and more gradual, and you may notice fluid weeping around the cylinder rod or base over time. On older lifts, especially those that have sat outdoors or in unheated Iowa garages through multiple winters, seal hardening from temperature swings accelerates this wear. A check valve that isn’t seating properly allows fluid to flow backward out of the cylinder even when the lift is otherwise sound, and a loose or worn fitting can leak slowly enough that it’s easy to miss without a close inspection. We’ve found this to be an underrated source of drift because it doesn’t always produce visible fluid — small leaks can evaporate or be absorbed before anyone notices a puddle.
Diagnosing this requires isolating the system: locking the mechanical locks, then watching whether the ram still moves down over time with the locks disengaged in a controlled test. If drift only happens with locks engaged, focus on the lock hardware. If it happens with locks disengaged too, the hydraulic side is almost certainly the source.
How Iowa Weather Accelerates These Issues
