It’s rarely one single problem — it’s usually a combination of trapped air, a worn seal, a leaking valve, or a lock mechanism that isn’t fully engaging. Trapped Air in the Hydraulic Cylinder

Air is probably the single most common of all the two post lift drifting down causes we diagnose. Hydraulic fluid doesn’t compress, but air does. When a bubble of air gets trapped inside the cylinder — usually introduced during a fluid change, a hose replacement, or a slow leak that lets a little air sip in over time — that air pocket compresses under the weight of the vehicle. The lift rises fine, holds for a minute, and then settles a few inches as that trapped air squeezes down.

The fix is bleeding the cylinder properly, which on most Rotary and Challenger two post lifts means cycling the lift up and down several times with no load, sometimes cracking a bleeder fitting, and running it through full travel a handful of times until the drift stops. If you just changed hydraulic fluid or replaced a hose and now the lift drifts, air is almost always the culprit before you start suspecting worn parts. A Leaking Hydraulic Cylinder Seal

Every hydraulic cylinder relies on internal seals to keep fluid on the pressurized side of the piston. Over years of use — especially in Iowa shops that run lifts through cold winters and humid summers — those seals dry out, crack, or simply wear from the piston sliding past them thousands of times. Once a seal starts to fail, fluid bypasses the piston internally, and the lift sinks even though there’s no visible puddle on the floor.

If the lift appears to drift but is actually just not fully engaging its locks, the real issue is a bent lock bar, a worn pawl, or debris built up in the locking mechanism. Grease, dirt, and rust accumulate in lock mechanisms over time, especially in unheated Iowa garages where moisture and salt track in on tires all winter. Dirt or metal shavings lodged in the valve seat, a worn valve spring, or a cracked valve body can all cause this. It’s a less common cause than air or seals but shows up often enough on older lifts that we always check it during a full drift diagnosis.

Similarly, a check valve that’s supposed to prevent backflow can wear out and start allowing fluid to creep past it under load. Replacing these valves is inexpensive relative to a full cylinder rebuild, so it’s worth ruling out before assuming you need bigger parts.

Low or Contaminated Hydraulic Fluid

Fluid level and quality matter more than most shop owners realize. Low fluid means the pump can’t fully prime the system, leading to inconsistent pressure and a lift that settles as it finds equilibrium. Contaminated fluid — water intrusion, metal particles from a wearing pump, or the wrong fluid weight entirely — can also affect seal performance and valve sealing, indirectly causing drift even when the fluid level itself is correct. Checking and topping off fluid with the manufacturer-specified type is a five-minute check that rules out one of the simpler two post lift drifting down causes.

Cable and Equalization Issues on Asymmetric Lifts

On asymmetric two post lifts with cables that help synchronize arm movement, a stretched or fraying cable can create the sensation of drift, particularly an uneven settle where one side sinks more than the other. This isn’t purely hydraulic — it’s mechanical wear on a component that’s easy to overlook during a hydraulic-focused inspection. Cables should be inspected for fraying, proper tension, and correct routing over sheaves any time drift is reported, especially if the drift seems to favor one post over the other.

Some of these fixes — like bleeding air or topping off fluid — are reasonable for a shop owner to handle. Others, like cylinder seal replacement, lock bar repair, or valve replacement, involve disassembling load-bearing components and should be done by someone experienced with two post lift service.
