What a Capacity Rating Actually Means
A two-post lift’s rating is the maximum total vehicle weight the structure, hydraulics, and cables are engineered to raise and hold, distributed across all four arms. A 10,000 lb lift is not four arms rated at 10,000 lb each — it’s 2,500 lb per arm under an even load. That distinction matters more than most buyers expect, because vehicle weight is rarely even. A three-quarter-ton pickup with a diesel engine can put well over half its total weight on the front axle, and a work van loaded with tooling and parts can be tail-heavy enough to change your arm placement entirely.
ALI certification is the other half of the picture. When a lift carries the ALI Gold Label, an independent lab has verified that it holds its rated load, that the safety locks engage, and that the labeling and manuals meet the standard. We won’t install an uncertified two-post in a commercial bay in Iowa, and honestly we discourage it in home garages too. A rating printed on a sticker by a factory nobody audits is a number, not an assurance. Real Vehicle Weights, Not Curb Weight Guesses
The mistake we see most often is spec’ing against curb weight from a website. Curb weight is a bare vehicle with fluids and no cargo. What actually rolls onto your arms is gross vehicle weight — the truck plus its bed liner, toolboxes, ladder rack, fifth-wheel hitch, fuel, and whatever the driver forgot to unload. A half-ton crew cab that lists around 5,500 lb curb can easily be near 7,000 lb as it sits. A three-quarter-ton diesel with a service body walks right past 9,000.
Here’s the rough tiering we use in central Iowa. A 10,000 lb two-post handles cars, crossovers, minivans, and light-duty half-ton pickups comfortably. A 12,000 lb model covers three-quarter-ton trucks, most full-size vans, and dually pickups with a light bed. A 15,000 lb model is where you go if you’re servicing one-ton service trucks, box vans, ambulances, or shuttle buses. If you’re building a fleet shop, assume the vehicles get heavier every model year and buy accordingly.
The Overhead vs. Baseplate Decision Affects Capacity Too
Buyers usually treat overhead versus baseplate as a ceiling-height question, but it changes how load moves through the structure. An overhead two-post ties the columns together at the top with a crossbeam, which handles lateral load and keeps the columns from wanting to lean under an off-center vehicle. That’s why most 12,000 lb and 15,000 lb models are overhead designs — the geometry is simply stiffer at higher loads.
A baseplate (floorplate) lift routes the equalization cables through a plate at floor level, which gives you unlimited overhead clearance for tall vans and box trucks. The tradeoff is that plate under your feet and slightly more sensitivity to how you spot the vehicle. Baseplate models are available at 10K and 12K, and we install plenty of them in shops with 11-foot ceilings or roll-up doors right behind the bay. Neither style is stronger in a general sense — but if you’re maxing out the rating regularly, we lean overhead. We walk both options with customers whenever the site survey shows a ceiling that could go either way, and we’d rather spend twenty minutes on that call than swap a lift a year later.
Concrete Is Half of Your Real Capacity
You can bolt a 15,000 lb lift to a four-inch slab and it will not be a 15,000 lb lift. Anchors transfer the entire load into your floor, and if the concrete can’t take it, the anchors pull, the column shifts, and you’ve got a very expensive problem. Most 10K two-posts call for at least 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete; 12K and 15K models typically want 6 inches or more, and some heavy models specify a reinforced pad poured specifically for the lift.
In Iowa this comes up constantly with older buildings. We core-test slabs in shops built in the 1960s and find three and a half inches over gravel, sometimes less near an old drain. When that happens the fix is a cut-and-pour pad under each column — inconvenient, not catastrophic, and far cheaper than a failure. We’d rather tell you that on the phone than discover it on install day.
Arm Configuration, Not Just the Number on the Column
Two lifts with identical ratings can behave very differently depending on arm design. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns and use short front arms and long rear arms so the vehicle sits back in the bay and the doors clear the posts — great for cars, less ideal for long-wheelbase trucks. Symmetric lifts use four equal arms and center the vehicle between the columns, which balances load better for heavy pickups but means the doors open into the posts.
Then there’s versymmetric geometry, which lets you use either position depending on what’s in the bay. For a mixed shop — one bay doing oil changes on sedans and the next doing brake work on a one-ton — that flexibility is worth real money. Also pay attention to arm reach and minimum pad height. A three-stage front arm reaches under a low sports car; a low-profile pickup pad set gets you onto a lifted truck’s pinch weld without stacking blocks. Home Garage Ratings: Where 9K and 10K Make Sense
Home shops are a different calculation. If you’re lifting a Corvette, a classic truck, and the family SUV, a 9,000 or 10,000 lb two-post from BendPak or Atlas is plenty of lift and easier to fit under a residential ceiling. We install these in Story County garages regularly, and the limiting factor is almost never capacity — it’s ceiling height, door track clearance, and slab thickness.
What we do tell homeowners: don’t buy the smallest rating just to save a few hundred dollars if there’s any chance a three-quarter-ton truck joins the driveway. The price gap between a 9K and a 10K or 12K model is modest compared to replacing the whole thing. And check your garage door opener travel before you commit — we’ve had customers get a lift installed and then discover the opener rail lands exactly where the crossbeam wants to be. A twenty-minute measuring session, or a photo texted to us, prevents that. Home installs also need the same anchor-torque and lock-function checks as commercial ones; the physics doesn’t care that it’s your garage.
How We Spec It, and What to Ask Before You Buy
When someone calls us for a 2 post lift weight capacity guide, we don’t start with the catalog. We ask what the heaviest vehicle you touch is, how often it comes in, what your ceiling height measures at the lowest obstruction, how thick your slab is, and whether you have single-phase or three-phase power. Those five answers narrow the choice fast.
