An overlanding builder in the Des Moines metro called us after seeing a used vehicle storage lift at an estate sale and asking whether it was safe to bring home. The lift in question was an older four-post with badly worn locking bars and a safety cam that wasn’t engaging positively on one post — a lift he could have had for a few hundred dollars, but one we told him to leave alone. What he ended up buying was a new storage lift that he now uses for oil changes on his own rigs between overlanding trips. Here is how the safety conversation and the eventual install played out.

The used-lift trap in the Des Moines metro
Between Ankeny, Ames, and West Des Moines we field two or three used-lift questions a month. A shop closes, an estate sale posts a lift, or someone lists a four-post on Marketplace for the price of a set of tires. The buyer who called us had found one in Norwalk with a bent runway rail and a locking mechanism that only engaged on three of four posts. That’s the used-lift trap: the price looks great until you price a replacement locking bar, a new runway section, and a factory-authorized inspection. On an older lift where the manufacturer has been bought out or the model discontinued, replacement parts might not exist at all. We told him to walk away and start fresh.
What safety-cam engagement really means on a vehicle storage lift
Every vehicle storage lift built to modern standards has mechanical safety locks that engage automatically as the lift rises. The lock is a spring-loaded pawl (or cam, depending on manufacturer) that drops into a notched ladder on each post. When you hear a distinct clank every foot or so as the lift rises, that’s the safety cam engaging into the next notch. When you park the vehicle at height and lower slightly onto the locks, the hydraulic pressure drops and the vehicle’s weight sits on the mechanical locks — not on the hydraulic cylinder. That’s what makes indefinite storage safe. If the safety cam doesn’t engage on all four posts, or if you can’t hear a positive click, the lift is unsafe to store on.
Why arm restraints don’t apply on a four-post — but locking bars do
Arm restraints are a two-post lift feature: they hold the swing arms from rotating out from under the vehicle. A vehicle storage lift is a four-post drive-on with fixed runways, so there are no swing arms and no arm restraints. What a storage unit has instead is a set of four locking bars — one per post — that engage the safety cams. On a proper install these bars are inspected annually, the notches are cleaned, and the return springs are checked for tension. If any of those return springs weaken, the lock might not drop cleanly into the next notch and the lift becomes unsafe. That’s the specific failure mode we look for on used lifts, and it’s often what kills a Marketplace deal for us.
Choosing a new vehicle storage lift over a used one
For the Des Moines buyer we ended up quoting a new 9,000-pound four-post with factory-fresh locking bars, springs, and cams — the whole safety system under warranty for the first year. The price difference between a used unit needing a full safety refresh and a new lift with warranty was small once you added parts, labor, and a certified inspection. Financing on the new lift also let him spread payments across twelve months, which the used seller was not going to offer. Oil-change workflow on the finished install
Oil changes are the most common home-garage use case for a vehicle storage lift after storage itself. The workflow is: drive the truck onto the runways, raise to about waist height, engage the safety locks, and slide underneath. The overlander’s Tacoma took about fifteen minutes end-to-end for a filter, drain, and refill once the lift was in place — versus forty-five minutes on jack stands. The lift also makes it easy to do transmission and transfer-case fluid on the same trip up, which is where a lot of overlanding rigs need attention after long trail miles. Access to the underside at standing height changes the whole ergonomics of a routine service.
Rolling jack safety and secondary locks
When a rolling jack is bolted to the runways of a vehicle storage lift, the jack itself has its own mechanical safety lock — a separate system from the four column locks. To lift a wheel off the runway, you raise the jack, engage the jack’s internal safety, and only then remove a wheel. Skipping the jack’s safety engagement and trusting the hydraulic pressure alone is one of the most common shortcuts we see on home-garage videos, and it’s the one we most often warn against. On a proper install the jack’s lock engagement should be positive and audible before any wrench comes off the ground.
Maintenance schedule for the safety system
An annual safety inspection is the minimum for a vehicle storage lift that stores a vehicle full-time. That inspection covers the four column locks (springs, pawl condition, engagement into the notches), the hydraulic cylinder for leaks or bypass, the equalizer cables for wear at the sheaves, and the runway welds for cracking.
