A Council Bluffs tire and alignment shop called us last spring with a specific ask: they wanted a vehicle storage lift that could hold customer cars overnight up top while the crew ran brake service and rotor swaps in the same bay below. It’s a reasonable ask, and it’s the setup we get called about most from western Iowa shops crossing over into the Omaha metro. Why brake work under a stored vehicle is a specific problem

Brake service and rotor swaps are among the higher-force jobs your techs do in a service bay. Sticky caliper pins get freed with a lot of persuasion, seized rotors get hammered off with a lot more, and torque-to-yield caliper bracket bolts get broken free with a breaker bar that the tech is standing up on. All of that force lives directly under a vehicle storage lift’s runways when the lift is holding another car five feet up. Your safety plan needs to account for the actual dynamic load in the room, not just the static weight sitting on the lift. Rule of thumb: never hammer or wrench under a lift that is holding only on hydraulic pressure. Always lock first.

Ceiling clearance for a Council Bluffs shop building

The typical older Council Bluffs shop building was framed with steel bar joists at 12 to 14 feet, and the drop-ceiling tile grid or the hanging light track lives four to six inches below that. A vehicle storage lift with a customer’s crossover SUV on top will land at roughly 11 feet of total height at the highest point. Do the math: you need at least six inches of clearance above the tallest vehicle you expect to store, ten is safer, and the lowest fixed obstruction — not the peak of the roof — is the ceiling number you measure to. If the shop was retrofitted with a spray booth or an air-handling duct running along a wall, note where that duct is; storage lifts can sometimes be positioned closer to the wall than you’d expect if the duct clears the raised vehicle.

Door swing and drive-in geometry from a customer-service angle

Council Bluffs shops that face I-29 or Broadway have narrower driveway approaches and steeper apron pitches than a rural shop does. That matters for a vehicle storage lift install because the drive-on ramp must clear the pavement transition without scraping a low front air dam. We spec extended approach ramps for tight-approach shops as a default. Overhead-door swing on the shop side matters just as much: if your bay door curls up into the ceiling and your storage lift is positioned near the door, the raised vehicle’s roof and the door track will fight each other. Sketch both on the same drawing before you commit to a lift location. We do that sketch for free.

Rotor swap workflow with a car parked overhead

Here is the workflow we recommend for a rotor swap in a brake bay with a vehicle storage lift overhead. Bring the customer’s brake vehicle into the bottom bay first. Confirm the top vehicle storage lift is at a mechanically-locked position and the hydraulic lever has been released — both, not just one. Chock the bottom vehicle’s wheels. Raise the bottom vehicle on your primary service lift — assume that’s a 2-post asymmetric or a scissor mid-rise, both of which we sell. Now the tech works between two lifts, and both must be locked before hands go under. Do the caliper and rotor work with the top-bay storage lift completely untouched. Do not raise, lower, or shift the storage lift while brake work is in progress.

Torque, brake-bleed, and the caliper-return safety habit

After the new rotors and pads are in and the caliper is bolted, the torque-and-bleed step is where techs get complacent. Two habits keep the bay safe. First, torque wrenches only — not impacts — on caliper bracket bolts, and confirm the torque spec on your service database before you click. Second, when the bleeder is cracked and pressurized fluid is coming out, that hydraulic pressure is not the same hydraulic pressure holding the storage lift above you, but techs conflate them under fatigue. Any time you’re working with pressurized brake fluid under a stored vehicle, take five seconds to look up and confirm the mechanical lock pin is still seated on the storage lift above. Not because it should have moved. Because verifying costs nothing.

End-of-shift shutdown and the overnight-parked-car protocol

When the last customer picks up their brake job at 5:45 and you’re closing the shop, the vehicle storage lift above needs a shutdown protocol. Confirm the top vehicle is centered on the runways — if a tech nudged it during the day for jack access, re-center it. Confirm the mechanical locks are engaged. Confirm the hydraulic power unit is powered off at the wall switch, not just at the pendant. Sweep the runways one last time for wheel weights, torn valve stems, or grease drops. Log the top-bay vehicle in your shop’s overnight-parked-car list — some insurance carriers now want that documentation in the event of an overnight incident. Turn out the lights. Come back Monday and the bay is exactly where you left it.
