What it actually does
A rolling jack for car lift is what turns a four-post into a full-service lift. On its own, a four-post lifts the car by the wheels. That is fine for oil changes, transmission service, exhaust, and anything else that leaves the tires on the ground. It is not fine for brake work, tire rotations, or alignment work that needs the suspension unloaded. That is where the rolling jack comes in. You slide it into position under an axle, extend the hydraulic ram, lift that axle a few inches off the runways, drop it onto the mechanical lock, and now you have a wheels-free lift.

Passenger cars and light SUVs typically live under 3,000 lb per axle. Light trucks and small vans push 3,500 to 4,500 lb per axle. Three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups regularly show up around 5,000 to 6,000 lb per axle when loaded with a service bed or a plow. Air-over-hydraulic vs hand-pump

Rail compatibility — the biggest gotcha
A rolling jack rides on the top rails of your four-post lift’s runways. Those rails vary by manufacturer. Stroke is how high the ram extends. Most bridge jacks give you 8 to 16 inches, and more stroke is better on shorter runways. Reach is how far the jack rolls along the runways. Long-reach jacks let one jack service front and rear axles from one setup; short-reach jacks limit you or require a second jack. Adapters are the pad stacks that fit between the jack’s cup and the vehicle’s pinch weld, frame rail, or diff. Install and air line
An air-over-hydraulic jack needs a proper air feed. That means a dedicated air line down one column of the four-post, a filter and regulator at the base, and a self-storing coil hose out to the jack. Do not run the jack from a dangling ceiling drop — techs trip on it and the hose gets pinched between the runway and the ram. Is one jack enough, or do you need two?
