An RV and trailer service shop in the Des Moines metro bought their first heavy-duty auto lift from us about fourteen months ago, and their story is the clearest illustration we have of what actually matters when you are specifying equipment for long, heavy, awkward vehicles. They had spent five years doing tire rotations and wheel work on travel trailers with a floor jack, cribbing, and a lot of profanity. When they finally committed to a real hoist, the shopping process took them three months and involved four different model comparisons, two building measurements, and one conversation about a floor drain that nearly killed the whole project. Why an RV and Trailer Shop Needs Different Specs

Most equipment catalogs are written for a shop that lifts sedans and pickups. An RV and trailer operation breaks nearly every assumption in those pages. Wheelbases run long — a Class A motorhome can exceed 250 inches, and a triple-axle gooseneck trailer stretches past anything a standard runway was designed to carry. Weight distribution is lopsided, with a black tank on one side, a generator on the other, and a slide-out assembly that shifts the center of gravity every time it moves. And unlike a car, you often cannot get a two-post arm anywhere useful, because the frame rails are boxed, wrapped in belly pan, or buried under a skirt.

That reality pushed this Des Moines metro shop toward a four-post runway configuration almost immediately, with a serious look at mobile columns as the alternative. Four-post runways carry the vehicle on its own tires, which sidesteps the whole lift-point problem, and they hold weight on mechanical locks rather than hydraulics under load. The trade-off is that tire rotation and wheel work require rolling jacks on the runways to get the wheels free. Mobile columns, by contrast, lift by the tire itself and leave the underside completely open — outstanding for brake and suspension work, more setup time per vehicle. We laid both out on the table and let the shop’s actual job mix decide.

Model and Spec Comparison: What They Actually Compared

The shortlist came down to four configurations. First, a standard-length 14,000 lb four-post with runways in the 172-inch range — plenty for dual-axle utility trailers, too short for the motorhomes they wanted to add to their service list. Second, an extended-length 14,000 lb version pushing past 200 inches of runway, which handled about eighty percent of their expected work. Third, an 18,000 lb heavy-duty four-post with wider runways and a heavier lock ladder. Fourth, a four-column mobile set rated in the 18,000 to 30,000 lb per-set range depending on configuration.

The numbers that mattered were not just capacity. Runway width determines whether dual rear wheels sit fully supported. Overall width between columns determines whether an RV with the awning rail retracted clears the uprights — we measured a 102-inch-wide coach and found only inches of margin on one candidate. Lifting height determines whether a technician can stand fully upright underneath, and on the extended models that number drops slightly compared to standard. Motor requirements matter too, since several models want three-phase power that a lot of light-industrial buildings in the metro do not have. Single-phase 220V options exist on most of these platforms, and that was the deciding constraint here, exactly as it is for many shops. They landed on the extended-length 14,000 lb configuration with single-phase power, a set of rolling jacks, and drip trays.

The Building Survey and the Floor Drain Problem

Before we quote an install we survey the bay, and this one had a wrinkle. The shop’s slab sloped toward a center trench drain running the length of the building, which is normal in a service bay but complicated for a four-post because the runways need to sit level relative to each other and the columns need solid, uniform anchoring. A trench cutting diagonally across the intended footprint meant one column would have landed within a few inches of the drain edge.

The fix was undramatic once we identified it: we rotated the entire layout roughly fifteen degrees, verified door swing and drive-on approach angle still worked, and shifted the whole footprint eight feet down the bay. That cost the shop about a week of planning time and zero dollars in concrete work. Had they ordered the equipment and scheduled a crew without the survey, that same discovery on install day would have meant a truck full of steel sitting in the parking lot while somebody called a concrete contractor. This is the single most common preventable delay we see. Measure the bay, photograph the floor, note every drain, expansion joint, conduit chase, and air line before you order anything. Install Day and the First Two Weeks

The install itself took a crew a day and a half. Setting and shimming four columns plumb, hanging the runways, routing and bleeding hydraulics, adjusting all four lock ladders so they engage simultaneously, and cycling the equipment repeatedly under load takes longer on an extended-length machine than a standard one simply because there is more steel to get true. We loaded a service truck onto it before we left, ran it top to bottom a dozen times, and listened for the four locks to drop together. If they do not, the runways are not level and everything downstream gets worse.

The first two weeks are always an adjustment period for the crew, not the equipment. Technicians who have spent years jacking and cribbing have to learn a new choreography — where to stage the rolling jacks, how far to pull forward before the tires hit the wheel stops, which side of the runway gives better access to the water heater bay. This shop set up a chalk line on the floor for drive-on positioning within the first week and cut their spot time in half. They also discovered that their air hose reels were mounted too low and had to be relocated, which is the kind of small thing nobody plans for and everybody encounters. An auto lift changes the traffic pattern of a whole bay, not just the one spot it occupies.

Tire Rotation and Wheel Work: What Changed

The core reason they bought was tire and wheel work, and the improvement there was immediate and measurable. A dual-axle travel trailer tire rotation that previously took two people the better part of an hour with a jack and stands became a twenty-minute one-person job. Rolling jacks on the runways lift each axle independently, the wheels come free, and the technician works standing up instead of on his knees on cold concrete in February.

There were lessons though. Trailer tires on older units are frequently seized to the hub from years of road salt, and torquing a stubborn lug nut on a vehicle sitting on rolling jacks calls for more care than doing it on a floor jack — you want the jack saddles set correctly on the axle tube and the lift’s mechanical locks engaged before anyone leans into a breaker bar. They also learned that RV wheel torque specs vary wildly by manufacturer and axle rating, and that a torque stick approach that works on passenger cars is not adequate on a 7,000 lb axle. That is a training issue, not an equipment issue, but the faster workflow surfaced it. Their tire volume roughly doubled over the year, and the auto lift paid for itself somewhere around month nine by their own accounting.

The First Service Call on the Auto Lift

Around month eleven, the shop called about a runway that was settling slightly lower than the other three when the vehicle was held on the locks overnight. That symptom points to one of two things: a hydraulic cylinder seal weeping, or an equalization cable that has stretched and is letting the corners travel unevenly. On a four-post it is almost always cable stretch in the first year, and that is exactly what it was.

Cable stretch is normal break-in behavior on new equipment and not a defect. The fix is re-tensioning the four cables so all corners rise and fall together and the locks engage at the same instant. On this machine it took about ninety minutes including verification cycles. We also topped off hydraulic fluid, greased the cable sheaves, inspected the lock ladders and pawls for wear, and checked anchor torque, since anchors can relax slightly during the first year of thermal cycling in an Iowa building. The whole visit ran under two hours. Had they ignored the symptom for another year, uneven cable tension would have accelerated sheave wear and put uneven load on one column — a much bigger repair. What We Would Tell the Next RV Shop

Fourteen months in, this shop’s only regret is not going longer on the runways. They bought for eighty percent of their expected work and have since turned away a handful of long coaches they could have serviced with another twenty inches of deck. Extended-length costs meaningfully less than replacing the machine, and floor space is usually the binding constraint rather than budget. If your building can take it, take it.

The second thing we would tell any RV and trailer operation in the Des Moines metro: buy the accessories with the machine, not later. Rolling jacks, drip trays, an air line kit, and a caster kit if you ever want to reposition the unit all cost less bundled and arrive on the same truck. We have watched shops defer rolling jacks to save money and then spend six months unable to do the tire work that justified the purchase in the first place. Third, plan the electrical before the equipment ships — a single-phase 220V circuit sized to the motor, run to the correct column, with a disconnect where the inspector wants it. And finally, write the daily and monthly checks into somebody’s job description on day one. The shops whose equipment lasts twenty years are not the ones who bought the most expensive machine. They are the ones who look at the cables and the locks every month.
