A heavy-duty truck shop owner near Sioux City called us last spring because he was tired of dropping oil pans on the floor with a transmission jack and a prayer. He wanted an auto lift that would let him pull a pan gasket on a Class 6 chassis without wrestling it, and he wanted to know the real number — not the sticker on a website, but the number that includes freight, concrete, electrical, anchors, and a certified installer standing in his bay. That question deserves an honest answer, so we built him a line-item breakdown and walked the shop before quoting a dollar of it. Here is how that process actually works in northwest Iowa, and what each piece of it costs.

Why the site survey comes before the quote, not after
We do not quote installation over the phone from a capacity number. Too many shops have gotten burned by a low online price that turned into three change orders once the crew showed up and found four inches of slab over gravel fill. So the first thing we do in Sioux City, Le Mars, or anywhere along that corridor is walk the building. We measure clear ceiling height at the lowest obstruction — not the peak, because the sprinkler main and the unit heater are usually the real limits. We measure bay width, door swing, column-to-column spacing, and where the compressed air and electrical drops already live.
Then we look down. Concrete is where installs get expensive. Most modern shop slabs in northwest Iowa are poured four to six inches with rebar or mesh, and a truck shop pouring for heavy equipment often has eight or more. A two-post rated for heavy-duty work usually wants a minimum of six inches of 3,000 PSI concrete at the anchor points, cured at least 28 days. We core-test or at minimum hammer-probe and check for control joints, post-tension cable, and radiant floor heat tubing. Radiant heat is the one that catches people — drilling a PEX loop is a bad afternoon. Finding all of that out during a free survey costs nothing. Finding it out mid-install costs real money and a day of downtime.
What the equipment itself costs, tier by tier
Pricing moves with steel and freight, so we quote in tiers rather than pretending a number holds all year. A quality 10,000 lb two-post from Rotary or Challenger, ALI-certified, sits in the low-to-mid four-figure range for the base unit. Step up to a 12,000 or 15,000 lb clearfloor model with taller columns and three-stage arms and you are in the mid-to-upper four figures. Once you cross into 18,000 lb and above — the range a truck shop actually needs for pan and driveline work on medium-duty chassis — you are looking at five figures for the equipment alone, and the columns start needing more headroom than a standard pole building offers.
Options add up faster than people expect. Truck adapters, stack extensions, drive-over ramps, air-line kits, and rolling jack platforms are each a few hundred to a couple thousand depending on capacity. For the Sioux City shop, we specced heavy stack adapters and taller arm pads because oil pan work means the tech is standing under a chassis with a pan the size of a coffee table, and the geometry matters more than the raw rating. We would rather sell a customer the right adapter set up front than have them shim with wood blocks six months later. That is not a hypothetical — we have replaced arm pads chewed up by exactly that habit.
Concrete work: the line item nobody budgets for
If the slab does not pass, you have two paths. Path one is a cut-and-pour pad: saw out a rectangle under each column, dig, tie rebar into the existing slab with epoxy dowels, and pour a thickened footing to spec. In our experience that runs a few thousand dollars for a two-post and takes a concrete crew a day plus a 28-day cure before anchors go in. Path two is relocating the lift to a section of floor that already has the thickness — sometimes free, sometimes impossible depending on where the doors and drains are.
Drains are their own problem. Older northwest Iowa shops often have a trench drain running dead center down the bay, which is exactly where a two-post wants its centerline. We have moved lift locations twelve to eighteen inches off-center to clear a drain, which then changes where the tech has to walk and how the overhead crossbar lines up with the door track. None of that is dramatic if you catch it on the survey. All of it is dramatic at 7 a.m. on install day. If you are planning new construction, call us before the concrete truck — telling your contractor to thicken two eight-by-eight sections costs almost nothing during the pour and saves thousands later. That single phone call is the cheapest money a shop ever spends on lift prep.
Electrical, air, and the 220V question we get every week
Almost every customer asks whether they need 220V. The short answer for a commercial shop: yes, and you want it. Most two-post power units ship configured for single-phase 208-240V, and many commercial models are available in three-phase if your building already has it. A 110V unit exists for light home-garage duty, but it draws hard, raises slower, and we do not recommend it for anything doing production work. For a truck shop pulling pan gaskets all day, the slower cycle time alone will annoy your techs by week two.
Budget for a licensed electrician to run a dedicated circuit with the correct breaker sizing and a disconnect within sight of the power unit — typically a few hundred to around a thousand dollars depending on panel distance and whether conduit runs overhead or gets trenched. We coordinate with the electrician but we do not do the wiring; that is their license and their inspection. Air is simpler: most two-post lifts need shop air for the mechanical lock release, and a quarter-inch line teed off an existing drop is usually a thirty-minute job. If your compressor is already at capacity, though, add it to the list — a lift that cannot release its locks is a lift that is stuck up in the air with a chassis on it, and we have driven out on that service call more than once.
Freight, delivery, and why a loading dock matters
An auto lift ships as a heavy freight item on a pallet or a bundled skid, and freight is one of the most volatile pieces of the whole quote. A two-post typically arrives as two columns plus an arm bundle and a power unit carton, and the total can push a couple thousand pounds. If your shop has a dock and a forklift, unloading is fifteen minutes. If it does not, you need liftgate service or a rough-terrain forklift on site, and liftgates on freight that heavy are limited — some carriers simply will not do it.
For the Sioux City job we arranged delivery straight to the shop with their own telehandler doing the unload, which cut several hundred dollars off the freight line. We also scheduled it two days ahead of the install crew so nobody was standing around waiting on a truck. That kind of sequencing is where an Iowa-based supplier earns its keep — we know which carriers actually service the I-29 corridor reliably in February and which ones will strand your shipment in Omaha for a week. If you buy an auto lift from a national dropshipper, you own the freight claim when a column shows up with a bent baseplate. Installation labor, anchors, and certification for your auto lift
Install labor on a straightforward two-post in a prepped bay is typically a one-day job for a two-person crew, and we quote it as a flat number rather than hourly so nobody is watching the clock. That covers layout and chalk lines, drilling anchor holes to depth, setting and plumbing the columns with shims, torquing anchors to manufacturer spec, running the hydraulic lines, wiring the power unit terminations, bleeding the system, cycling the lift through its full travel, and testing every mechanical lock and the overhead shutoff. We finish with a load test and a walkthrough with whoever is going to be under the thing.
Add complexity and the labor grows. Overhead beam clearance issues, out-of-level floors needing heavy shim packs, three-phase terminations, or a bay full of parts carts all extend the day. For a heavy-duty unit with larger columns, plan on more crew and more time. We also handle ALI-standard annual inspections after the fact, which matters for insurance and OSHA documentation — a lot of Iowa and Nebraska shops do not realize their carrier expects a documented annual on every auto lift in the building. Adding it up: the honest all-in number
For the Sioux City truck shop, the all-in came out roughly like this. Equipment and adapters accounted for a bit over two-thirds of the total. Freight was in the high hundreds because they unloaded themselves. Electrical was around a thousand with a short panel run. Install labor was a flat one-day rate. Their slab passed at eight inches, so concrete was zero — which is the single biggest swing factor in any quote we write. Total landed cost came in about thirty percent above the equipment price alone, and that ratio is a decent rule of thumb for a shop with good concrete and existing power.
Where shops blow the budget is skipping the survey and buying on price. We have been called to fix installs where somebody anchored a 12,000 lb unit into a four-inch residential-grade slab, and the only honest answer was to cut and repour under a lift that was already assembled. That is a five-figure mistake dressed up as a savings. Get the survey, get the concrete verified, get the electrical scoped, and then decide what you can afford.
