Every few months someone running a European-marque specialty shop calls us about outfitting an autolift garage on a budget, and the question is almost always the same: is a used lift a smart buy or a trap? We’re an Iowa-based installer and parts distributor, we service secondhand equipment constantly, and we sell new lifts too — so we have an incentive to tell you “buy new” and we’re not going to. Sometimes used is the right call. Often it isn’t, and the reasons people give for going used are mostly myths. A shop we work with over in the Iowa City area learned this the expensive way on a wheel bearing job, and their story is a good place to start.

The Wheel Bearing Job That Started This
The shop in question does German cars almost exclusively — a lot of front wheel bearing and hub work, which on those platforms means real force. Press work, big torque numbers, a lot of leaning on a bar. They’d bought a used two-post at an auction, had a friend help set it, and ran it for about eighteen months. Then during a bearing job the tech noticed the passenger carriage was sitting visibly lower than the driver’s side at the same lock. Not dramatically. Maybe three quarters of an inch. Enough that he stopped and called us.
What we found was a stretched equalization cable and, more importantly, anchor bolts that had been set in a slab that was never checked. Two of the four on that column had lost their bite and were spinning in the hole. Nobody got hurt, which is the only reason this is a teaching story instead of a bad one. The repair was a set of cables, four new anchors, a cut-and-pour pad on that column, and a day of our time. Add it to the auction price and they were within a few hundred dollars of what a new mid-tier lift would have cost them, except they’d also lost a day and a half of billable bay time. That’s the whole used-versus-new math in one anecdote: the purchase price is not the price. Building out an autolift garage on used equipment can absolutely work, but only if you price in inspection, anchoring, and the parts you’ll replace immediately.
Myth One: A Lift Is Just Steel, So Age Doesn’t Matter
This is the most common thing people say to us, and it’s half true in the most dangerous way. The columns and carriages on a well-built two-post really are just structural steel, and a 20-year-old Rotary column is often in fine shape. But the parts that actually keep a car in the air are wear items with finite lives: hydraulic cylinder seals, the equalization cables, the lock ladders and latches, the hose, the power unit. Cables in particular are the item nobody thinks about. They stretch, they corrode from the inside where you can’t see it, and they have a service life measured in years and cycles, not in whether they look okay.
So when someone tells us age doesn’t matter, what we hear is that they’re budgeting for the steel and not the consumables. On any used lift coming into an autolift garage, we assume cables get replaced, we assume the cylinder gets inspected and probably resealed, we assume the hose is due, and we assume the locks need adjustment. Sometimes we’re wrong and it’s all serviceable. More often we’re right. Budget a meaningful percentage of the purchase price for that work up front and the decision gets a lot clearer. If the seller can’t tell you when the cables were last changed, they were never changed. That’s not cynicism, it’s just what we find.
Myth Two: Parts Are Always Available
For the big names, mostly yes. We stock and source parts for Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas, and the other major brands, and we can usually identify a lift from a photo of the data plate even when the model number has been painted over. Where it falls apart is the orphan brands. There was a stretch of years when a lot of imported two-posts came into the U.S. under names that no longer exist — no importer, no parts channel, no engineering drawings. If your used bargain is one of those, you own a piece of equipment that cannot be legitimately repaired. A cylinder is not a generic part. Neither is a lock ladder or a carriage slide block.
Our advice is simple and it’s the single most useful filter in the whole used market: before you bid, find the data plate, get the manufacturer and model, and call us. It takes five minutes and we don’t charge for it. If we can tell you we stock cables, a cylinder, and a power unit for that model, the used purchase suddenly looks a lot smarter, because you know the thing is maintainable for the next fifteen years. If we tell you we’ve never heard of it and neither has anyone else, walk away no matter how cheap it is. A specialty shop in Iowa City that lives on wheel bearing and suspension work can’t afford a bay down for three weeks while somebody tries to fabricate a lock latch. Maintainability is worth more than a low sticker price, every time.
Myth Three: Installation Is the Same Either Way
New lifts arrive with hardware engineered for them — the correct anchors, the correct fasteners, complete cable sets, a manual with the actual anchor torque specs and concrete requirements. Used lifts arrive with whatever was still bolted to them when they came out of the last shop. We’ve received used two-posts with mismatched anchors, missing shims, no manual, and cables cut rather than unwound. That’s not a dealbreaker, but it does mean the install is a different job, and anyone quoting you the same install price for used as for new hasn’t done many.
The concrete side matters even more with used equipment, because you’ve lost the paper trail. With a new lift we know exactly what the manufacturer requires and we verify the slab against that spec — thickness, PSI, distance from joints and edges. With a used unit we may not even know the rated capacity for certain, which means we’re being conservative by default. In practice we test-drill the anchor locations, confirm what’s actually under the surface, and pour pads if we come up short. Around eastern and central Iowa, a lot of shop floors are four inches over marginal base, and four inches is the bare minimum for a 10,000-pound two-post. When we’re commissioning a used lift for an autolift garage, we treat it like a new installation with extra unknowns, and we tell customers up front that the install line item is going to be higher than they expect. It’s the cheapest insurance in the building.
When Used Genuinely Is the Right Answer
We’ve said a lot of cautionary things, so here’s the other side. Used makes real sense in a few specific situations. First: a known-brand lift coming out of a dealership or a closing shop where you can see maintenance records and watch it cycle before it comes apart. Dealer equipment often lives an easier life than you’d guess and gets inspected annually. Second: a second lift for overflow or storage duty rather than your primary production bay. A four-post used mostly for parking doesn’t work its components nearly as hard as a two-post doing daily wheels-off service.
Third: when you’re buying capacity you couldn’t otherwise afford. A used 15,000-pound commercial lift for the price of a new 10,000 is a legitimately good trade if the brand is supportable. And fourth: when we’ve inspected it. We do pre-purchase looks for customers in our territory, and it’s the highest-value hour anyone spends in this process. What we’re looking at is column straightness, carriage slide wear, cylinder rod condition and weeping, cable condition at the sheaves where it’s worst, lock ladder wear, and the data plate. Thirty minutes tells us most of what matters. If you’re building an autolift garage and the budget is genuinely tight, the smart play isn’t new-versus-used in the abstract — it’s finding one supportable used unit, having it inspected, and spending the savings on doing the anchoring and consumables properly.
What New Buys You That Used Doesn’t
Warranty is the obvious one, and it’s worth more in a production shop than people credit. If a new power unit fails in month eight, that’s a phone call and a part in the mail. If a used power unit fails, that’s a part you pay for plus the diagnosis. In a shop where every bay hour is booked, downtime is the real cost, not the component. Second, current lifts are simply better designed than what was built two decades ago — better lock mechanisms, better lowering-speed control, better arm geometry with more adjustment for the low, wide sills you find on modern European cars.
That last point is not a small thing for a marque-specialty shop. A lot of newer German platforms have pinch weld lift points and low ground clearance that older asymmetric arms fight with. New lifts come with truck adapters, stackable pads, and telescoping arms that reach short and long wheelbases without drama. Retrofitting adapters onto an older lift is possible and we do it, but the arm geometry itself doesn’t change. Third, you get the documentation — the manual, the capacity plate, the anchor spec — which matters for insurance and for any inspection regime you’re subject to. For a shop where wheel bearing and suspension work is the bread and butter and cars are on the lift under load all day, we usually end up recommending new for the primary bay and used for anything secondary. That’s the honest split.
How to Decide, In Order
Here’s the sequence we’d give any shop owner sizing up an autolift garage decision. Start with what the bay has to do: capacity, rise, and vehicle mix. A European-marque shop needs low-profile arm reach and enough rise to stand under a raised sedan, and probably doesn’t need 15,000 pounds. Second, measure your building — ceiling clearance to the lowest obstruction, door swing, and slab. Third, set a total budget that includes install, electrical, and any concrete work, not just the lift. That number is what you’re actually spending.
Fourth, shop new pricing in that bracket before you look at used, so you know what the baseline is. A lot of people are surprised that a solid new two-post from a supported brand lands closer to their number than they assumed, especially once used inspection and consumables get added in. Fifth, if used still wins, filter hard on brand and parts availability, get the data plate, and have it inspected. Sixth, whichever way you go, have it installed and anchored by someone who does this for a living and will stand behind it.
